Lessons for picking a manager

1010

Back in January we discussed Mauricio Pochettino, who yesterday left Southampton to become manager of Tottenham Hotspur.  He is without question the hottest management property in the most bloated league in football.

He was also an unemployed flop a little over a year ago.

In reality, Pochettino is a good manager but he is also the latest in a long line of faux guru-managers, the aura of divinity around him is illusionary.  He was sacked by Espanyol in December 2012 with the club bottom of La Liga after 13 games, after propelling them up the league from a similar position two years earlier.  Espanyol’s problems were not Pochettino’s problems.  The club strategy had been failing for years, Pochettino was not the first manager to suffer as a consequence, in fact, he was the club’s third manager in a season when he took over.

He joined Southampton, who were on a different trajectory.  Southampton have been producing some of the best youth talent in the UK for a decade but a series of self-harming boardroom battles saw the club competing in the third tier of English football.  In Nigel Adkins the found a man who won two consecutive promotions and had them comfortable in the Premier League.

Then, in January last year, Southampton made one of the ballsy-est decisions in football history.  They sacked the successful Adkins and replaced him with the aforementioned unemployed flop.

Chairman Nicola Cortese, who was an outsider to the football industry, figured that Adkins could only take the club so far and that, with the appointment of a man in-tune with the new strategy, Southampton could make a real breakthrough at the top of the Premiership.

Pochettino did what Cortese wanted, not through obligation, but through instinct.  Unfortunately for Southampton, Markus Liebharr, who appointed Cortese, died, and his daughter-and-heir, Katharine, figured the family had spent enough of their fortune on an English football club.  With strategy tending towards a breakeven point, Cortese resigned.  It was inevitable that Pochettino would follow.

What are the lessons for us?

Forget looking for a guru, it’s all about the strategy.  Get the strategy right, only employ people who are instinctively aligned to it, and employ an intelligent, tactical student, even if he can’t speak the language.

Number of scams increase in Scotland

    Last updated 7 hours ago

The report showed an increase in the level of fraud committed electronically

The number of people in Scotland falling victim to financial rip-offs has increased, according to a consumer advice agency.

A helpline set-up by the Citizen’s Advice Scotland (CAS) recorded a 14% increase last year in calls about scams.

On average 30 people a week are calling the helpline for advice.

The CAS have published a new guide to give the public advice on how to stop themselves falling victim to scams.

Last year the number of calls to the helpline rose from 1,429 to 1,631 across Scotland, with the majority of these calls being made from the Perth and Kinross area.

The report’s findings showed that scams are being more prevalent through online channels, with 64% of all emails now being classed as spam.

    Online dangers

Two of the most common scams which are attempted by email are “love scams” in connection with online dating sites and fraudulent emails claiming to be from banks or government organisations.

It also showed that the most common age group of people who are falling victim to scams fall into the 31-40 age group.

The new CAS guide is published as part of Scams Awareness Week where advice centres have worked with consumer agencies like Trading Standards to help stop falling victim to illegal scams.

Susan McPhee, Head of Policy at CAS Scotland, said: “It’s very sad that there are so many people out there who are keen to exploit people’s trust and relieve us of our hard-earned money through deceit and trickery. But the good news is that Scots seem to be fighting back more.

“Even if you haven’t actually been the victim of a scam yourself, you should still report any you know about, so that we can help protect people from it and maybe bring the perpetrators to justice.”

She added: “Because scams are crimes. If someone took money out of your pocket you would report it to the police. An online or doorstep scam is no different. We need to work together to raise awareness of fraud and stamp it out.”

Captain Britannia: Nigel Farage is the Union’s Useful Secret Weapon

    Alex Massie

    27 May 2014 11:53

Your enemy’s enemy is not necessarily your friend. That is something forgotten too easily. Nevertheless, though he may not be your friend he may, for a time at least, be your ally.

And so it came to pass that Nigel Farage is, for the time being, Labour’s new best chum. In Scotland, that is. The Tories are quite pleased with him too and, if anyone could find them, perhaps the Liberal Democrats would be too.

Of course, officially, there is much tut-tutting and hand-wringing over Ukip’s success in Scotland. We’re all supposed to be simply appalled that these fruitcakes have won a seat in the European parliament. Terrible stuff.

Come off it. These are the lamentations of a crocodile. Secretly – and sometimes not so secretly – Unionists are delighted by Farage’s success in Scotland. He was supposed to be Alex Salmond’s useful nutter; instead he has become the Union’s secret weapon.

It is hard to see how the euro results could have gone better for the Unionist parties. (Unless, granted, you’re a Liberal Democrat.) The Tory share of the vote held up (17 per cent is these days a decent result), Labour’s share increased by five points and the SNP was contained, held below 30 per cent of the vote. If this election was supposed to put a spring in nationalist steps it failed to do so. Yes, the Nats topped the poll (as everyone expected they would) but they had high hopes of a third seat and those hopes were dashed. Only narrowly, it is true, but dashed all the same.

A third SNP seat would have put a very different spin on everything. The Nats would have ‘momentum’ on their side and destiny would be calling them to rally again in September. Scotland would be on the march, you see.

Instead, however, the SNP was checked. It won but it did not win decisively. Most importantly, as Adam Tomkins correctly observes, Ukip’s success demolished a central part of the nationalist narrative justifying independence.

That story runs that Scotland is a couthy social democratic country but England is a vicious place populated by heartless neoliberals and it is crazy to think that places with such different — and diverging! — political cultures could ever be part of the same country.

Ukip were supposed to prove that. They were supposed to do very well in England but very badly in Scotland. That success south of the border would then be used – leveraged, if you like – by Salmond to substantiate his claim that Scotland and England should no longer share a country.

Well, Ukip did well enough in England. But they did just a little bit too well in Scotland. True, their level of Scottish support lags some way behind their support in England but you can no longer say their Caledonian support is entirely negligible or credibly maintain there’s no place for UKIP in Scotland.

(There are many reasons why Ukip’s support in Scotland lags behind their support elsewhere but one – among several – is that in Scotland there’s already a nationalist party for people who think the Tories and Labour are just the same).

According to Salmond, however, it is all the fault of the beastly media. If the press hadn’t paid so much attention to Ukip none of this would have happened. Blaming the press, of course, is a sure sign a politician has nothing sensible to say.

But, hey, perhaps this is why the SNP’s campaign was in large part obsessed with Ukip. ‘Vote SNP to keep Scotland Ukip-free’ was pretty much all one heard from the nationalists in the campaign’s latter days. So perhaps Mr Salmond should be blamed for Ukip’s success too.

I don’t suppose the glee with which Unionists have greeted Ukip’s Scottish success is terribly edifying. But it is understandable. Unionists have been on the defensive for many months now and needed to catch a break. Nigel Farage has given them just that.

And, of course, in some respects Ukip’s success should not be terribly surprising. A third of Scots say they wish to leave the European Union (though it is a less salient issue in Scotland than elsewhere) and two thirds favour restricting immigration much more sharply than is presently the case. In terms of policy preferences (as opposed to political identification) Scotland is not so very  different to England.

This is inconvenient for the nationalists but there you have it. Improbable as it may seem, this has been the Union’s best few days in a long, long time.

Ukip are awful but, gosh, they can be rather useful too. Salmond’s outrage – bluster, if you like – tells you that. The SNP won the election but in a larger sense they lost it too. Such is the fine line between success and failure.

I have no idea if these boys are members of the Green Brigade, and given the secrecy around their membership, have no idea how the papers would know. Perhaps they volunteered the information.

Anyway, that’s an aside. Point is that it’s a good thing that their case will go to full trial. It’s been a while coming, and the case needs to be heard.

The line between what gives rise to criminal offence and what gives rise to personal offence requires the argument to be made and judged.

I’d rather be presenting the defence than the prosecution on this one.

  20. Morning all. Overcast but dry down here.

A bit gloomy but not downcast over last night’s football. Thought Scotland looked like a football team, who were at least the equal of Nigeria. (Was that the fix??) I wonder what those who forced WGS out are thinking now? I would not be unhappy to have him back- mind you, I didn’t want him to leave in the first place.

The U21 game showed me why we don’t recruit from the likes of Dundee United and St Johnstone. Our lads were outclassed. It would be great to think we might have our eyes on some of those Dutch lads or on their coaches. They obviously play the game the way it was intended.
