Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

Over 16k at the Hearts game on Saturday which is close to capacity for them.

Is it really that hard to create a feelgood factor at a football club? Preferably we wouldn’t need the conditions that existed at Tynecastle for us to create it for ourselves but we seem to shoot ourselves in the foot continually.

PL wants to move away from the Latin alphabet which, with its measly 26 letters, only allows him to go as far as plan Z. The use of Chinese characters would seem to allow for infinite goal post moving (PL’s idea of heaven).

I was told by an old guy who hasn’t missed a game in decades (including Lisbon) that a few games have been moved, including this one, but Bada confirmed that it’s still scheduled for the 13th. Old bugger knows nowt :-)

    Hearts areas were sold out.

They fancy their chances to beat us in a few weeks.

I doubt that will happen but they will give us as good a test as Dundee did.

Can’t wait for the poppy season arguments…

Why would there need to be a Poppy debate in an independent Scotland? Wouldn’t it be just like ROI basically British army = not our fecking concern and just what would past British imperial glory have to do with a post independent Scotland ? ‘Hud on’ – damn good reason to vote Yes in that case – no more poppy debates on CQN- emmm food for thought.

All is not fantastic. Of that I am certain. More can definitely be done imo.

    Hi mhate.

What would you have done differently that would have altered his mind change-scepovic?

    Perhaps offered him more money

    Maybe he is useless,another Pukki,Balde,Boeriggter

But we are shopping in the bargain basement and trying to haggle

Pay peanuts you will get monkeys

Unfortunately Cetic don’t have the ability or desire to pay the wages necessary to get top quality players

    BUT…

IF (and its a huge IF) Celtic really wanted to sign this guy then they could have and should have

They didn’t because they thought they might get him on the cheap

    Oh and by the way

    Ronny The Spoofer out

  10. Paul,

ref Jerry McGuire….I watched ‘Draft Day’ recently.

Thought crossed my mind: How much do we really know about players before we sign them?

Over the years there have been players that have shown up and shocked some of the coaching staff with their ineptitude.

Pukki, I am told is very shy and struggles on and off the park.

Do we get a chance to meet and interview players before shelling out loads of money? Or no money according to some…..:)

  11. I don’t get why so many Celtic fans advocate signing Steven Fletcher.

Throughout his career he has averaged roughly 1 goal every 3 games.

He is not the answer to our striker problem.

  12. I would say the next four domestic games Dons, Murderwell, Mini Huns (all Home) and The Buddies away. Will decide RD’s future, four wins a must or Bye Bye. Forget the EL, we’ve nae chance.

  13. Justafan,

    I noticed.

But most sites still have the ‘well game after the Thursday in salzburg as being a Saturday too.

    That one must change Shirley?

  14. I don’t enjoy reading constant attacks on the management of the club and I would more than likely fall into the happy clapper brigade. BUT…… today is threatening to be a very bad day. There are now 3 possible scenarios as far as I can see it. 1. We splash the cash and get a top striker, then we could have just spent before the qualifiers and be in the CL by now. 2. We get a great deal either loan option or purchase. 3 We don’t get any quality goal scorer and the season is over before it begins. For me No.2 is the only one that will in anyway justify the strategy up to now and it’s probably the least likely. Tick tock….

Although some of them are a horrible lot the way the majority have rallied round their club is impressive and they have heeded the call to save their club. There is an opportunity there for them to return and really challenge for honours every year and with the momentum they have at the moment you’d expect that to happen.

Hibs, on the other hand, appear to have far deeper issues,

It’s not a rumour about the top tier for EL games, it’s fact. They may open it later if sales exceed expectations.

I had a pet snake for a while when I was young, but my mother said there was a funny smell, and went berserk when she found Hissing Sid curled up snug in the drying cupboard on one of her best towels. Sadly, I was forcibly made to repatriate him with the pet shop in the Saltmarket, but they didn’t take snake returns, so I brought him home in his box, on the No; 1 bus. My old man outed him again. He ended up being set free in a local field, with very long grass but low and behold he turned up again one night at my upstairs bedroom window. I still don’t know how he managed it, as the field was a mile away, and although he was an amazing mate, I’d no idea he could do vertical council house pebble dash. He was the only snake in our village, and as I eventually fell asleep whilst he was tonguing at the window, that night, I never saw him again.

I now know he was more than likely a she, as sexing snakes at that time wasn’t a speciality of mine, however I shall always think of him, as a him.

  18. The Aberdeen game is before Matchday 1 of EL so there is no requirement for it to be moved to Sunday.

I read with interest your comment about friends asking whats wrong at Celtic? My friends are asking that too; like your own they have experience at ceo level in a plc.

All to a man/woman comment on the uniqueness of the market conditions our club operate in.They are at times befuddled as you or I due to this factor.

    Some things said when talking

Most plcs have a competitor-we do not

Most plcs have a slice of their market – Celtic are by far the biggest factor in their market,

Due to market we operate in (Scotland) we are prone to look lovingly at other markets (England)and feel it is a comparitive due to our emotional history when we could take on teams from rhere and beat em

imo we operate in the precarious plc market and the uncertainty is compounded by the weak market we operate in (here)

All good in debating Celtic mate HH

  23. traditionalist88

Agreed. I have no time for most of their fans but they have got their club sorted by backing the club when it needed them. They are galvanised and when you have got out of the hole they were in believe anything is possible. They are flying right now.

We should have way too much quality for them but they have a lot more heart than we have. We are a really disjointed unit. I don;t usually advocate this but the team look like they need a few pints and a piss taking session.

Come to think of it who do we want to stay?

They could give us a game if the lethargic Celtic we are becoming accustomed to turns up.

Funny you should say that btw, reading Brian Cloughs book and he regularly had his team having beers on the eve of games(including the European Cup final) and on occasion on the way to a game!

You are right though, our team lacks character and leaders and you don’t see anyone shouting anymore. Gordon appears to do so more than Forster but no one in the defence will shout, Kayal remains an imposter who will flatter to deceive and Stokes will moan alright without offering a solution.

As we over complicate the game more and more I think its time to get back to basics.
