Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

  1. The Human Torpedo is really here for the gastronomy:

“French-born Moshni pled guilty yesterday (mon) at Glasgow’s Justice of the Peace Court to driving without insurance and while on is mobile phone.

He was fined a total of £405 with 28 days to pay, and handed six penalty points.

A plea of not guilty to a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, by pretending to police that he didn’t live in the UK and was visiting the country for a catering course, was accepted by prosecutors.”

  2. When I go to Celtic Park to support the business, I wonder to myself. Is this the team I grew up supporting as a lad.

    ‘I can’t believe it’s not Celtic’

    ‘Because’ it looks, like Celtic.

    ‘Because’ it tastes like Celtic.

Deep down you just know it’s not the real deal.

But for me. The way I deal with that? Well I’ve decided to support the business.

  6. We don’t need a striker. Not to win the league, at least. To go any distance in the EL, we do.

I just want RD to win, using the players he has/ He is playing a game designed for the players he WISHES he had.

Get 3 solid midfielders with 10 to 15 yards of each other. Henderson, Kayal, Johansson for now. Commons as a link man. Griffiths and an other up front.

Use your fullbacks to give you occasional width.

Use a winger as a sub in home games.

Win the midfield THEN press up.

Play some new fancy style once you get new fancy players.

Until then, win with what you’ve got.

    Simple game……

I’ll be surprised if we don’t sign a striker, but I’ll not be surprised if we’ve never heard of him.

  8. Go tell the Spartim on

The keeper signing was from 2012. The second link i dont know when from but would think it was bogus

  9. We need a keeper because if Craig Gordon gets injured we are vulnerable.

The question is, why do we need Zaluska.

Why can’t we sell these games out?

Team needs us just now and all we do is complain. We have good times and bad times but we should all get behind the team and show why we are the worlds best supporters.

I don’t want to see the jam tarts have a better and louder support than us in a couple of weeks.

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

The truth is, our stadium capacity is too high for the league we operate in. The days of near-sell-outs for bog standard domestic or 2nd tier euro matches are well behind us and will not return imo. If we were designing a new stadium from scratch it now, the capacity would be 45 or 50k max. Even Juventus had to cut the cloth accordingly when they built their new ground.

Also, why should fans feel obliged to contribute anymore to the Peter Lawwell bonus pot after the shambles of the past month or so?

I’ve not been serious with many of my striker suggestions or realistic (fletcher) however, i cant see us going far wrong with a punt if that’s fair on him on someone like Stevie May. I cant see that ever back firing on us. Where as Balde and Pukki unfortunately have. Not for the outlay, and hes proven beyond doubt in SPFL scores in Europe for St Jonhstone, but I agree with others on here he’s not the next level why cant he be moulded into that though.

He the type of player who would not see us a landing pad and would stay around for a career or many many years!

  14. Loans with options to buy is good business. After Bangura, Pukki, Balde and Bowfinger, who could possibly disagree !?

  15. Lawell’s SSN interview fills me with confidence (that we will sign feck all).

    NatKnow:

Yeah that’s why I write so much on this subject, why I sweat days like today, why I put so much time and effort and emotion into this.

Cause I’m not really that worried.

I am sure you believe what you just wrote, even if you don’t believe what I did.

I won’t even attempt to convince you otherwise. You are entitled to your view.

    ————————————————————————————————

You put plenty of effort into writing about Celtic – I can see that. But, by your own admission, no effort into supporting them. Does your writing about Celtic make you passionate about them? I dunno. Happy to take you word for it.

But setting this aside, I wasn’t asking you to convince me of anything. At the end of the day, whether you go along to Celtic Park or not – that’s up to you.

Your original submission was a expressions of worry about “the next generation”. My point is that the next generation will be engaged because their family take them along to the games – not because of some vexed hand-wringing on a blog.

I don’t need to get into an epistemological argument with you about what I believe to be true. It’s self-evident that kids get into football because their parents take them along to games.

If you don’t want to go – fine. But to then sit scratching you head about how we get kids engaged sounds more than a little ironic. I don’t need a gallery to play to – I’ll keep on supporting Celtic and taking my kids to the games. So don’t you worry about the next generation of kids – the Celtic supporters will have it covered. Giving you something to write about for many years into the future.

    Everyone’s a winner.
