Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

    My friends in Celtic,

We heard on the previous article this morning how “Rangers” used to entice their potential signings VIP jets blah, blah.

I give you Mario Jardel. Now that was a farce although we did get to see his stunning wife.

    HH.

Yeah. And we used to laugh at THEM when THEIR management shafted THEM.

Not so funny when we are the shafted ones.

  9. Strikers don’t play defense. Midfielders and defenders do. Current company excepted.

Do we plan on signing anyone who can tackle, or pass out of defense?

    NatKnow:

Maybe you’re missing my point, maybe you’re just twisting it.

You can’t speak for what your kids will do. You can guide them up to a point, but when they get to that point they will look at what they see, not what you tell you them you see.

Then they will make up their own minds.

The soul of our club is up for grabs right now. You keep on going to the games. That’s important in keeping the club running in the present fashion.

I am concerned about what the club stands for. It doesn’t exist merely to give people something to do on a Saturday afternoon.

I am past the point, way past the point, of caring whether people buy my “Celtic credentials” or not. If you think it’s an expression of how much leaves your wallet then so be it. I think our love affair with this club is about more. A lot more.

I’ll debate the strategy all day, every day, with anyone who wants to. I’ll discuss where we are, where we’re going and where we ought to be. I’m through discussing my private beliefs and decisions, and those who want to keep making the point can do it till their hearts content, but it’s nothing more than a deflection from the points I’m trying to make.

I’ll go further than that. There’s a lot of personal animosity swirling about on the blog right now, and I’m through dealing with that on here too.

jfknut1@yahoo.co.uk is my private email address. If anyone wants to have a personal go, do it on there and spare the rest of this blog all the nonsense.

There are serious people on here, with serious worries, over serious issues. I respect Paul and this blog too much to turn it into a forum for personal abuse. I’ve been guilty of it in the past, to my shame, but that’s all over.

  11. The Moneyball Myth

Based on the Oakland A’s, the moneyball theory was popularised by book and movie, and seized upon by a number of sporting organisations throughout the world.

After the death of the Oakland A’s owner in 1995, the new owner slashed costs in a period of downsizing. Billy Bean and Sandy Alderson oversaw a new philosophy in ‘sabermetrics’ and seeking value in an inefficient market.

The film followed Bean taking the A’s on a long unbeaten but ultimately unsuccessful run.

Before moneyball was imposed on the Oakland A’s, they had 14 appearances in 94 years in the World Series.

Since moneyball, they have had 0 (zero) appearances in the World Series, but have drawn praise for being efficient and a well run business.

Between 1988 and 1992, the A’s enjoyed their most successful period in recent times, with 4 world series appearances. This was achieved on the back off the leagues’ highest wage bill by 1994.

DD personally handed NL a copy of Moneyball the book.

Was moneyball so lauded because it was ‘sold’ by Brad Pitt and a likable fat guy?

Probably because it produces no sporting success whatsoever.

You refer to questioning and frustration as ‘anti Celtic’.

I don’t think you understand how deeply many of the posters on here care about this football club of ours.

It may not be to your liking but it’s not out of hate, loathing or a desire to inflict hurt or pain upon it. No, it’s out of concern and a desire to see us doing better.

The fact that on deadline day we’re all sitting here like coiled springs, on the verge of tears through frustration is a disgrace.

Since Hooper left we haven’t had a striker worthy of the name, or certainly not in his class. Yet, it looks like we’re trawling the EPL for their flotsam and jetsam in the hope that we can find someone, anyone who’ll sign for us.

It’s a shambles Celtic, an absolute disgrace.

Games a bogey. 90 odd days in a transfer window and we’re scrabbling around in the last hours trying to sign someone who wasn’t good enough for us in the first place.

  18. Basturk anyone?

Think he’s destined for us this window.

McGinn wasn’t good enough 2 years ago and ain’t good enough now.

Armstrong would be stupid to knock back Everton for us. Ive seen it written somewhere, so it must be true :-), that he fancies a move to England if he left D Utd, and who could blame him.
