Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

  1. Thankfully….

NIALL McGinn will not be leaving Aberdeen FC today, according to his agent.

The Dons forward was linked with a move back to his former club Celtic, with reports suggesting a fee had been agreed between the two clubs.

However, speaking to the Evening Express this afternoon, McGinn’s agent Gerry Carlile dismissed the reports.

He said: “I haven’t been told anything about Celtic. Niall won’t be going anywhere tonight. He is happy at Aberdeen.”

McGinn spent three years at Celtic between 2009 and 2012. Since his move to Pittodrie he has become a fans’ favourite.

The Northern Irishman scored a wondergoal in Aberdeen FC’s 2-0 win over Partick Thistle on Saturday.

The Dons earlier denied rumours linking McGinn to Brighton and Peter Pawlett to Celtic.

  2. @CelticNewsFirst: Virgil Van Dijk called up to Dutch squad.

  3. Biggest problem is that downsizing has now developed a momentum of its own.

So much so that in three weeks time Ronny faces a pivotal moment in his Celtic career.

Against a background of a sparsely populated Celtic Park he could face his Super Caley moment in Hearts |League Cup tie.

SSN reporting McGeoch to Hibs on loan. Cunning from PL – loan to Hibs to help ensure they get promotion over the newco. Good business.

Seriously? This is your priority? The huns?

F*** me, I’m out of here before I lose it with these wallopers for good.

  6. The ‘moneyball’ strategy is flawed… and only now is it becoming clear why…. for every Wanyama, Forster, Hooper etc, we have any one of the players out on loan today plus the dross thats left i.e. the “projects” that didn’t work…

The success of the strategy can’t be judged on the buy/sell ratio of any one player, its the overall.. and the overall for the moment is bad.

Celtic should look to buy the best young players in Scotland, supplemented by our youth team and purchases from abroad which are less of a risk. This is the only way we will prosper, and in turn, other clubs in Scotland as well. Keep the best talent in the league, in the league.

  7. Oh my…

Can we have Steven Fletcher on a loan-to-buy deal, please?

Pay him the wages and any underperforming current players who have an issue with it can whistle.

The lack of foresight and planning is mind numbing and this from a CEO who earns how muck. Peter Pan could sift through deadline day unwanteds and wouldn’t cost the club £10 million for the pleasure. In all seriousness what does PL do. I posted a link to that reputable economics publication Forbes on here a few days ago. The article summariZed the role of a good CEO aS RECRUITMENT.

Why can’t we sell these games out?

Team needs us just now and all we do is complain. We have good times and bad times but we should all get behind the team and show why we are the worlds best supporters.

I don’t want to see the jam tarts have a better and louder support than us in a couple of weeks.

    ——————————————————————————————————————–

The truth is, our stadium capacity is too high for the league we operate in. The days of near-sell-outs for bog standard domestic or 2nd tier euro matches are well behind us and will not return imo. If we were designing a new stadium from scratch it now, the capacity would be 45 or 50k max. Even Juventus had to cut the cloth accordingly when they built their new ground.

Also, why should fans feel obliged to contribute anymore to the Peter Lawwell bonus pot after the shambles of the past month or so?

Celtic v Hearts £15 for adults. Celtic 3 match Europa league 3 match £60 for adults.

I don’t feel I’m giving Peter Lawell any bonus money at they prices.

Aberdeen v Livingston the night before our cup game is £19, £16 and £13.

    Good pricing imho

Talksport saying Niall McGinn to Celtic, hope not

Games a bogey. 90 odd days in a transfer window and we’re scrabbling around in the last hours trying to sign someone who wasn’t good enough for us in the first place.

    Agree with you fully.

Problem is that current tranfer window is no different from others.

Celtic lack the haw maws to go into a tranfer window with an attitude of, that’s who we want and that is the price.

  20. Livibhoy,

Really? I know he’s injury-prone but he’s mobile (ish – way more than the other ex-Hibs players we have), great in the air, has a good touch and he can score goals.

It’s pie in the sky, anyway (not served up by someone not earning the living wage).

just in case anyone reading this from celtic, derby would listen to offers for johnny russel, get it done!!

  23. dr ramesh and the love potion on

We need our signing policy explained to us clearly.

    Who selects the players?

Does the manager get a say as to who he wants and when? Does anybody listen to him?

Who sets the timetable for signing players?

If a player is identified by the scouts and manager as being choice A at the beginning of the window what is the process and time scale for getting the player signed before we move on to choice B?

We seem to weaken our hand when dealing with choice A or B by dithering for whatever reason and then end up paying over the odds for choice C, D or E at the very end of the window. We will never be able to sign all our choice As and Bs but it is getting repetitive how poorly we organise our transfer windows. We can whine all we like about players not wanting to come but those players should be eliminated from our list asap so that we can deal with realistic targets.

We will see what happens today but I feel Ronny Delia has been horribly let down so far by those who should be managing the squad and player recruitment. Whatever you might want to say about his tactics is valid but he has walked into a shambles not of his making.

  24. Beamishismypint on

If we had speculated in a sensible manner we could be looking forward to the champions league now rather than a half empty stadium and general depression IMHO

  25. So Fabio Borrini Liverpool (where he earns £50k/week) to QPR for £13M. 45 appearances between Liverpool and Sunderland where he was on loan – 8 goals.

This kind of nonsense filters it’s way across the entire football market.
