Lessons from Jerry Maguire

1815

News that a striker reneged on a verbal commitment to join the club 24 hours before deadline day should surprise no one.  Think back to that line from Jerry Maguire, when Jerry’s girlfriend hears he had secured a representative deal on a handshake, not an actual contract.  The agent’s reminder of Lesson One in business was sharp.

Last minute change of plans happen, but only when you’re doing last minute business.  We are now 10 hours away from the deadline and in desperate need for what we’ve been in desperate need…. to replace the long departed Gary Hooper.  It would be wrong to think that Scepovic was the only striker we were pursuing, so we’re not starting from scratch, but he was first choice.

The ball is still in play, not panicking yet.

For once I’m glad a noon Saturday kick-off is moved to noon Sunday. It means I’ll make the Aberdeen game!

Game still scheduled for the Saturday @ 12.45

What happened in the last 9 months? He was declaring we could spend £6m+ on a striker last season.

Something is going on behind the scenes.

Lennon has obviously called them out. Stop lying to the fans or I will blow the lid. Interview on Friday was the most honest in years.

  10. Anyone trying to state that it is becoming more difficult to attract players to Celtic will get immediately hit with the rather childish response of “Are you saying that this well run, world famous club cannot get anybody to come- that’s nonsense!”

And of course it is nonsense- it is a dialogue of the deaf.

We are hit by a double whammy though. The players who are willing to come are not often of the required standard (Berget and Johansen and Bangura were willing to come as Celtic was a step up from Norwegian and Swedish football, both in terms of wages and European competitiveness but neither is outstanding). Some players who are willing to come like James McArthur or Johnny Russell are either tempted away by bigger wages in England or are considered no better than their counterparts in our Development squad (with McArthur and Russell, that judgement seems wrong but there are many, equally touted Scottish based players, for whom that judgement was right- John Sutton, David Clarkson, David Goodwillie, Margaro Gomis, Prince Buaben etc;).

Then there are those who are willing to come, at a premium, but choose not to pick Celtic because they feel more comfortable elsewhere. We had a deal for Jeff Louis but he preferred to go to Liege, maybe to continue to speak French and have slightly better weather. Scepcovic chose to go to Getafe where I doubt he will enjoy better wages but will have a more familiar setting to play within, in a career where he has travelled much already.

We failed to convince these players to commit. Some of the players we did persuade, looked immediately unhappy on arriving here- look at Pukki!

Yet players did come- Wanyama came from a small Belgian club, Ki from Korea and Ambrose, Kayal and Bitton from Israel. There are markets we can still tap and profit from but England is, increasingly, not one of them.

Last night I suggested raiding the reserves benches of the bloated big squads in England, like we did with Denayer. Yet I read in the Guardian today that, at Man U, Wellbeck earns 80k a week, Ashley Young 115k, Hernandez 88k, Anderson 80k, Kagawa & Fellaini 70k each. Tom Cleverly only gets a basic 30k a week but has a heavily incentivised contract and Villa will pay him a basic above what Man U offers. Similar sums will be paid to the expensive subs at Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and Spurs. Even an alleged Celtic fan like Agger preferred to downgrade to his boyhood club Brondby rather than indulge his fondness for Celtic. We would have paid him more than Brondby will but he has already made millions from England and does not need our little extra, when compared to playing for his first love.

So many players will not come. The lure of Celtic and our position in World football can be much exaggerated. But some will still come regardless.

The only question is what category of player will come-

As good as Wanyama?- that’s odds against

As good as Bitton and Ambrose- that should be achievable

As good as Pukki and Balde- that should be avoided and resisted.

If we cannot buy anyone good enough, then, rather than waste money, I would accept a loan player if he was as good as Denayer.

Why would there need to be a Poppy debate in an independent Scotland? Wouldn’t it be just like ROI basically British army = not our fecking concern and just what would past British imperial glory have to do with a post independent Scotland ? ‘Hud on’ – damn good reason to vote Yes in that case – no more poppy debates on CQN- emmm food for thought.
