Lessons in team building from Switzerland and Cyprus

1100

Living so close to England it’s easy for us to get drawn into the ways and processes which prove effective south of the border.  SPL clubs all scout there, more often than not trying to pick up physically robust scraps discarded by the lower leagues, or troubled souls looking for a sixth chance.  Scottish clubs are full of players who have failed to make the grade in England.

When Motherwell were looking for a manager a year ago I heard one of their directors say they hoped to get someone with experience of the English lower leagues, as this has proven to be an effective place for them to network in the past.

Problems with the neighbours works both ways.  It’s too easy for English clubs to use the loose change part of their budget to scoop up anything that looks like promising talent from the SPL.  While most players will earn well in England, few enjoy the career progression they hoped for.

They do things differently elsewhere.  When was the last time teams from Cyprus or Switzerland badgered an English League Two side for their surplus talent?  Developing football teams is difficult but a good top level plan helps.  One of the most encouraging aspects of Celtic’s top level plan is that it meets criteria that match our place in the world.  Recruit talent from the right markets, at the right age and price.  Some money has been spent in England, but not much, and those who have arrived from there look decent value.

If Celtic are to match the recent Champions League achievements of Basel or Apoel Nicosia, players like Izaguirre, Kayal, Wanyama and Ki, who pitch up in Glasgow from what appears to be beyond the horizon of the English, will be crucial.  Just as those players at Basel and Apoel, they arrived here within an affordable budget and appear to have the talent required to compete at the level Celtic aspires to.

11 years ago we bought Chris Sutton from Chelsea against competition from other FA Premier League clubs.  He was soon joined by others at the peak of their ability and reputation, all relatively low-risk signings.  We had a few years in the sun but it was neither affordable nor sustainable.

We’ll know soon enough if the current crop of players trying to establish a reputation for themselves have what it takes to win the league and compete in Europe. Good top level plans can still fail in execution, but I’d rather this strategy than send my cash down the M6.

Cracow is not the place for Euro games but remember that England and Holland will have their camps in the city. They will be playing in Ukraine but not decided to live there. Both and others prefer Poland.

I say about that becouse expect more tourists from those countries next year. Some will come much earlier to see the places few months before Euro 2012.

    Zbyszek, Gordon_J and everyone,

Anyone who pours any kind of scorn on mental illness is not worth debating with. They are way beneath contempt.

Guys – don’t read the imposter’s posts. Scroll by. I’m doing my best not to stoop to his level by insulting him more.

I spent this morning with a representative of a major UK charity who told me that Neil was an inspiration to their patients and had, without invite, turned up at a hospice on Christmas morning to help out and speak to the patients. He has offered to do whatever is required for the charity, without pay or publicity. That’s the kind of person he is.

As for mental health problems, I’m a volunteer in an organisation that deals with children. Tonight I was in tears thinking about the impact of mental health problems on the 2 young kids I saw earlier this week – awful, heartbreak and Kojo – you have NO idea.

I’m proud of Neil Lennon and will be ecstatic when he lifts the League trophy.

  11. I just remembered a man called Bill Fuller earlier tonight. Then I looked him up and found out he had died September three years ago. He was a big man in every way. A great and good friend to those he took to. He would have been the man to promote Celtic, but being a Kerryman, his first love was GAA. He owned pubs in all the NY boroughs, and a welter of places in Ireland. It’s funny how these things come about. Way early in the troubles he wanted me to move to NY to work for him, but the missus didn’t want to go–kids too young and too far away from their grandparents. I was amazed when I read about his promotion of music–he knew all the top guys, and was instrumental in getting Johnny Cash more widely known. Right, that’s my first Guinness tomorrow in his memory.

I haven’t read Kojo’s depression posts..but I can imagine it chimes with many of his right wing views that I don’t share..I still think he’s a top poster though – usually makes me think – even if I think he’s wrong, in fact ften I think he’s wrong but I’m only going to attack his views not attack him..

The only thing I’d say about depression is something I heard at a conference from a Psychiatric consultant – ‘Depression can be a fatal Illness’

A fact that struck me quite deeply and I am reminded of all too often when you see tragic events such as Gary Speed’s death. Not a subject to be joked about or treated lightly – depression is different to being fed up – Depression kills!

I don’t agree with all that Kojo says but I enjoy many of his posts. He doesn’t need me to stick up for him either. He seems well enough equipped to do that for himself. I have fallen out with a few people on here in the past for things that they have said so I’m no saint either. I do think that Kojo gets picked on from time to time.

Many people come on to have a go at him but say that they don’t read his posts any longer. Why bother to post about him if you no longer red his posts? If you do so because you have read other people’s posts that are having a go at Kojo but you yourself haven’t read what he has posted and you subsequently come on to add your twopenceworth agains Kojo …… I would call that ‘ganging up’.

I ALWAYS read Kojo’s posts – when I disagree with him – I respond accordingly, when I agree with him I usually tell him – most of the time I just smirk, knowing he’s pulling somebody’s chain – to a greater or lesser extent – many on CQN play the same game. If all we did was come on CQN to agree that all is great at Celtic – CQN would not be anywhere near as popular as it is?

Anybody who wants to get my goat -can post more about the Huns than Celtic – I’d rather critique (positive or negative) about Celtic than endless chat about what might or might not happen in Govan…Jesus , I’m doing it myself, now!!

caeser67 – when I saw declan on a few nights ago – thought surely even a current could not be that daft..turns out …it was too good to be true. But, too late I had to have a nibble.

like me ye have been declaned …by a fellow tim…it happens mate

btw just my view but calling anyone a hun should be the nuclear option…when ye ring that bell it stays rung. I had to defend one of my buddies on here recently when few bams ganged up on him suggesting he was a hun because he made some comments about the central defence (not that I agree with all his views mind) so then I became the subject of attack too: Seemingly at some time I had the temerity to say I had been ashamed of Celtic fans….

of course the aim was to ridicule and isolate me …not sure I had ever used the expression ‘ashamed of Celtic fans’….yes I spoke out when annoyed at a few away fans at the Cardiff friendly recently … was well brassed off by the guy that threw a boattle at the rapid vienna game..and the bam that ran uo to the ac milan keeper. Maybe even ashamed was correct after all…but only with a few bams. You see how that can get used by some to make you out to be something you are not?

anyway I got declaned by declan too , so you are in good company ….suggest you just smile and enjoy the chat :-)

To look at Gary Speed,… you see a good lookin fellah, with no doubt a gorgeous wife and kids, nice big plush house on a plot of exclusive land,…plenty of dough, idolised and befriended by many in the game and even outside it.

Yet he took the decision to end his life the way he did….

    at the age he did…

leaving behind a family who needed him.

Now I suffer from depression myself,…but That there says it all for me how the depths of despair that the depression can induce.

havent caught all of kojo’s posts tonight but if hes saying that medication only masks the problem ,…then I agree with that.

I found learning about the biological effects of stress and negative thinking has on the mind and body quite interesting and helpful. When it comes to spiritual/mental weellbeing,… the Far East is the way to look IMO.

The things they have known for hundreds of years in places like India,… that so—called modern science has only realised is food for thought…..
