Life truisms and leaving extra in the Hampden lockers

1052

There are truisms in life.  The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, night follows day and Hibernian Football Club will not win the Scottish Cup.  However, a failure to lift the trophy since Orville said to Wilbur, ‘I bet this thing gets off the ground’, does not guarantee subsequent failures.  Hibs have already beaten Celtic this season and are perfectly capable of doing so again on Sunday.

Before this season Kilmarnock hadn’t won at Celtic Park since 1955, but it happened.  St Johnstone, Motherwell, St Mirren, Inverness and Ross County beat us too.  All these defeats were against the odds; no more so than Hibs are on Sunday.

Celtic need to get in touch with how they felt after their League Cup semi-final defeat to St Mirren, a day of so much regret.  The 90 minutes will pass quickly, there’s no point leaving something in your locker for next week. Let’s get off to a flier.

Many thanks for sending over your Seville photographs, we are planning to pull photos and your comments on the event together into a special publication.  If you have any more please send them in, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

Willie Wallace will be signing copies of his book at Waterstones on Sauchiehall St between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, 25th May.  Bet he knows what he was doing that very afternoon 46 years earlier.  Get along to see him or order your own signed copy below. This is going to be a great weekend.

I would love to know if marvellous players of Willie’s vintage look at football today and think about the differences. Top players today are often millionaires before they are 21, whereas, even guys who played long after Willie had to take fairly ordinary jobs to make ends meet when they stopped.

Today, some players in the top league will still definitely need to find alternative means of making a living when they retire, but the top ones, including the ones who play for Celtic, should be set for life.

The trade-off is that we have a less competitive league.

Does Willie know of a way of making the football in Scotland more competitive without compromising players’ ability to be set for life when they hang up their boots?

Glad to see that at least one of the younger brigade tries to help, what questions did you ask?. Are dangerous weapons like crutches allowed into the racing, or are there cheap rates for the aged, and people using crutches. These are the sort of questions that I would ask, and maybe a wee rider like, will there be enough jockeys to ride out the horses, as there are bans coming the jockeys way.

See when you send a wee post to someone, you’d think he would answer it, Ignorant burger.

There’s two aspects of the killing that must worry the security services.

    1. The ‘up close and personal’ nature of it has shocked people far more than a more professional shooting or bombing would have done, so from the perpetrators perspective it has been very successful and is therefore likely to be repeated.

    2. It required little organisation, planning or resources so is unlikely to be picked up by electronic or other surveillance. An attack could take an hour from conception to execution.

What does Willie believe was the key to Celtic playing so well on the day in Lisbon?

  10. Sevco losing £1M a month and still signing SPL players. Seriously, is that mob mentally challenged or just way beyond stupid?

Wille says there is no substitute for good players the or now.

In Willie’s experience in Australia in different sports – players would get paid regardless of whether they played. Now it is more geared towards bigger payments for actually playing/performing.

So a system where guys who are doing well at clubs like Motherwell, Dundee United etc would benefit more for their performances whereas others not in team or playing don’t.

On the kitchen – he says where’s the BBQ?

Common consensus is that our big downfall in Milan 1970 was complacency.

Does Willie agree? How does he believe the complacency set in? Looking back, what does he remember people or saying now that smart of complacency? How can a team, including a team today, guard against complacency, in his opinion?

    ——————————————————-

I was 7 when we won in Lisbon and it was the first season that I really began to understand what Celtic was about. Willie was my favourite player and, believe it or not, in my naivety I was actually a bit disappointed that he was not the one who scored the winning goal – imagine that.!

Willie had been Hearts top scorer for a few years but I believe that the goals had faded a bit in 1966. I understand that there were stories that Rangers were about to swoop. Did Willie have any idea of interest from Celtic? What did he see in Celtic at that time when he must have been aware of interest from Rangers who had been so much stronger in the years before? Did he see that the tide had turned?

I will be going to the Glasgow book signing tomorrow and look forward to meeting him.

    Thanks in advance.

Re Milan – not complacency. Without going into details – poor preparation – nowhere near as good as Lisbon and also problems between the players and management at the was not as it should have been. That Celtic team was as good as the Lisbon team so it is a great sadness. Could and should have won it.

As a poser Willie asks where did Celtic play their last match before Milan? Does anyone know?

Things happened there that set things on their way that lost Celtic a second European Cup.

I don’t want to question his meme=ory but I didn’t dog school that day and I remember him coming to St Ninians but am pretty sure it was within a month or so of winning the cup and certainly 1967 rather than 68.

Excellent points. One wonders if the government will use this to enact new laws to include reducing privacy rights, increased stop and searches etc in an attempt to show that they want to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

Well, before the Milan final, Celtic played a couple of warm-up friendlies, against Fraserburgh and Stenhousemuir.

The last competitive game was a 2-3 victory for us at Love Street, but that was in mid-April.

Was it the chopping and changing of the team in the friendlies? Should Davie Hay have been in the team in Milan?

This is riveting stuff. Thanks again to Willie.
