Life truisms and leaving extra in the Hampden lockers

1052

There are truisms in life.  The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, night follows day and Hibernian Football Club will not win the Scottish Cup.  However, a failure to lift the trophy since Orville said to Wilbur, ‘I bet this thing gets off the ground’, does not guarantee subsequent failures.  Hibs have already beaten Celtic this season and are perfectly capable of doing so again on Sunday.

Before this season Kilmarnock hadn’t won at Celtic Park since 1955, but it happened.  St Johnstone, Motherwell, St Mirren, Inverness and Ross County beat us too.  All these defeats were against the odds; no more so than Hibs are on Sunday.

Celtic need to get in touch with how they felt after their League Cup semi-final defeat to St Mirren, a day of so much regret.  The 90 minutes will pass quickly, there’s no point leaving something in your locker for next week. Let’s get off to a flier.

Many thanks for sending over your Seville photographs, we are planning to pull photos and your comments on the event together into a special publication.  If you have any more please send them in, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

Willie Wallace will be signing copies of his book at Waterstones on Sauchiehall St between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, 25th May.  Bet he knows what he was doing that very afternoon 46 years earlier.  Get along to see him or order your own signed copy below. This is going to be a great weekend.

With regards to Vermaelen…not a chance.

We wouldn’t pay 5m, we wouldn’t pay his wage (50k+/wk?), I wouldnt want Celtic to risk that cash on anyone, he wouldn’t play in Scotland. Etc.

  13. A CONSORTIUM of Scandinavian

    businessmen vying to take

    control of Hearts have dispatched

a legal team to Lithuania to

thrash out a deal for the club.

    The unnamed syndicate

    comprised of six Norwegian

    businessmen “with an

    educational background from

    Edinburgh”, first surfaced

    several months ago.

    However, their interest was

thought to have flagged until the

    sudden release of a statement

    through sports management

    firm, Crest SportsGroup. Talks

    between the group and rival

    consortium Foundation of

Hearts had taken place back in

February but a second round of

discussions in regards a joint bid

    never materialised.

The group have now made clear

    their intentions with “a

    comprehensive business case

and action plan” in place and “a

    team working full time in

    Kaunas” to monitor the

    situation.

    Their statement reads: “We have

    made contact with the

    appropriate authorities in

    Lithuania and elsewhere to gain

    access to the necessary

information, as well as make it

    known that this group of

    businessmen may be interested

in fielding a bid for the club.

    “We currently have a team

    working full-time in Kaunas to

    monitor the situation and keep

    contact with the appropriate

    parties in relation to the

    situation at Heart of Midlothian

    FC. This team includes the

    necessary local legal capacity to

field a bid for the club and

    negotiate the terms of a

    takeover, should a decision to

    move ahead be taken.”

    However the group have also

made it clear that they are

unwilling to take on any of the

    club’s current £25 million debt.

    The identities of the foreign

    delegation remain under wraps

    but the group reportedly come

    from business backgrounds in

    banking, oil engineering,

    shipping and venture capitalism.

    A spokesman for Crest

    SportsGroup said: “Until

instructed to do so, we are

    prevented by client

    confidentiality to reveal the

    identities of the group of

    businessmen, and their decision

to step forward will be taken

    entirely by themselves when

    appropriate.

    “We can confirm, though, that

    most of them have educational

    background from Edinburgh,

    and they all consider themselves

    supporters of Heart of

    Midlothian FC.”

    Edinburgh MP Ian Murray, who

    represents the six key Hearts

    fans’ groups – Federation of

    Hearts Supporters’ Clubs,

    Foundation of Hearts, Heart of

    Midlothian Shareholders’

    Association, Heart of Midlothian

    Supporters’ Trust, Hearts Youth

    Development Committee and

Save our Hearts – said of the

    emergence of another bid:

    “There has been no contact

    between this group and the

    Foundation of Hearts for some

    time.

“It is clear that they are also

    uncertain about matters in

    Lithuania and are awaiting

clarity like ourselves. All we can

    do is continue working on

    establishing our own bid.

“We do not view this group as

rivals, as all we have is the best

interests of the club at heart as I

    would hope they do also.

“If they wish to come and speak

to us about their bid then we

would be more than happy to

    talk.”

    In September 2011, a

    sponsorship deal between Crest

    SportsGroup, described as a

    multi-international sports

    consultancy, and city ice hockey

    side Edinburgh Capitals collapsed

    due to “difficult economic

    conditions.”

  14. Appologies for wrong earlier post.

“Two beautiful venues for our finals for 2015,” UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said.

The timing could not have been better as far as Germany is concerned with an all-German Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund set for Wembley on Saturday.

The 2015 match, at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, will be the first European final in the German capital which hosted the Olympic Games in 1936 and the 2006 World Cup final.

Two German cities have previously been used as the venues for the Champions League final with Munich hosting it three times in 1993, 1997 and 2012 and Gelsenkirchen staging the 2004 final.

Dortmund and Hamburg have hosted the UEFA Cup, now the Europa League, final since it was switched to a single-match final in 1998.

Poland, which co-hosted Euro 2012 with Ukraine, has never staged a major European final, but Warsaw’s refurbished National Stadium staged the opening match of last year’s European Championship between Poland and Greece.

It also hosted the semi-final in which Italy beat Germany 2-1.

UEFA last year awarded the 2014 Champions League final to Lisbon and the Europa League final to Turin.

SOT – from earlier, you are correct, it was a lazy generalisation on my part. I did note however, that the last Rome derby resulted in six stabbings and quite a lot of violence.

Well I ain’t got tickets for me or the Bhoy for Sunday !

Unsuccessful in the ballot and no joy from family, friends and associates.

If anyone knows of a couple of tickets going, either in the Celtic areas or the Main stand, irrespective if it’s for the Celtic or Hibernian section, please consider letting me know.

I’ll be over at Hampden on Sunday in the hope that some become available at the last minute.

I’m going to Hampden without one as well.

I’m giving mine to my 13yo daughter.

Any thoughts on where you’ll be watching the game if you don’t get a ticket?

I’m not sure of the pubs around that area.

  22. Whilst looking for the answer to the CelticFC competition, I came across these facts regarding the 6-1 game in 1972.

The record 20th century Scottish Cup final score line.

Celtic also scored 6 goals in League Cup finals against Hibs, 6-2 in 1969 and 6-3 in 1974, where Dixie Deans also scored a hat-trick.

Dixie Deans became in the history books the first (and to time of writing the only) player to have scored hat-tricks in both a Scottish Cup and League Cup Final.

The final tally of arrests during and after the Scottish Cup Final was announced as 223.

Baillie Stewart Stevenson, Glasgow’s senior magistrate revealed that 150 had been for “miscellaneous offences,” mostly urinating. Sixty four supporters were arrested inside the ground and charged with breach of the peace.

    Jock Stein:

“Let’s take stock of the season, we won the League championship and the Scottish Cup and we were in the final of the League Cup and were not beaten in any of the European Cup matches. I think we did all right.”

Jim Craig’s last game for Celtic after a marvellous career.

Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld was a Hibs’ substitute on the day.

Kenny Dalglish and Dixie Deans win their first Scottish Cup medals.

Celtic had now created a Scottish record of scoring 19 goals in one Scottish cup campaign.

Two jets flew in over 250 Celtic fans from Canada into Prestwick airport on the day before the match. They paid $370 for a four day trip to Scotland.
