‘Loan’ recipient Souness gets everything wrong, including Hillsborough

453

Graeme Souness was in town to promote a book yesterday with some incredible statements for those of you who “rejoiced at Rangers’ problems”, saying:

“Scottish football needs a strong Rangers and a strong Celtic to create interest outside of Scotland.

“If that’s not the case, Scottish football would die.

“As much as Celtic supporters and other supporters of clubs in Scotland have enjoyed the moment, [Rangers’ liquidation] has damaged football in Scotland beyond belief.

“My luck was that, at the time, the English clubs were having to rebuild their stadiums post-Hillsborough.”

Set aside for a moment the fact that the 97 fans of Souness’ former club, Liverpool, died at Hillsborough three years after he took over at Ibrox.

Ignore, for a moment that we, according to Souness’ former Scotland team-mate Willie Miller, are as good a Celtic team as he has seen, that our income has reached new heights and will go higher still this season, that we are packing stadiums wherever we go, and that all of this is the product of a long-term, sustainable strategy.

Disregard that Hearts are nearing completion of their stadium expansion, or that Aberdeen are set to build an impressive new stadium, or that Hibs are packing out Easter Road at a rate not seen since the 60s.

Pay no attention to the fact that Motherwell have found an ownership model, a manger and players to have them sitting third in the table and in the League Cup final.

Instead, remind yourself why Rangers got into trouble. They introduced an aggressive tax avoidance scheme which they knew would be challenged by HMRC, and they made no provisions for this challenge.

The paid over 55 football players through this tax scheme, ‘loans’ which were never to be repaid and which were eventually ruled as disguised remuneration.

Most strikingly, while manager of Blackburn Rovers, Graeme Souness received such a loan from Rangers. When asked to explain by the Daily Record, Souness even claimed the loan was remuneration – for scouting services. More flagrant remuneration than disguised.

Souness went on to say, “I live in England and there was always an interest in Scottish football from football fans in England. That’s no longer the case.” Maybe if he spent more time with BT Sport, than Sky his impression of interest in the Scottish game would be different.

If Graeme Souness wants to offer advice on Scottish football, perhaps he should be magnanimous and write a cheque for repayment of that loan.  Hillsborough matters way more than any book promotion.  If you are a former Liverpool captain and want to reference Hillsborough as an aid, get it right.

Souness and the other ‘loan’ recipients should be chased out of town for the carnage they caused at Rangers. Instead, he gets a platform to spout nonsense about Hillsborough and Scottish football, despite appearing to know little about either.

Sevco search for a new manager, will surely be well publicized and encompass many spurious unaffordable high profile managers.

In private the main criteria will be cost and association membership.

So they will arrive at a short list of unemployed, “Real Rainjurs” men.

Anyone with a history of EBTs whose silence can be guaranteed get extra points.

Just check the words to BBC from Ned Ferguson, the one called Barry.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes the club’s next manager should know the club “inside out”.

A less than subtle dog whistle to the knuckle dragging element.

The criteria however could be temporarily suspended in mid November.

That’s when a leak will appear talking of an interest and enquiry for Derek McInnes of Aberdeen.

And it’s not because Sevco are scheduled to play Aberdeen twice in four days at the end of November and first week in December.

No siree Bob. No way would they unsettle a rival manager. No way never.

Jabba will of course deny the rumour or being its source.

Denials will flow faster than the river of the same name.

In the end and faced with Aberdeen demands for compensation Sevco will withdraw their “non interest.”

And so the field will be reduced to every physcophantic ex player who “knows the score.

No World Series tonight so I was headed for an early bed in preparation for a tough weekend watching Celtic, MLB and NFL.

However, over my crackers and cheese I made the mistake of listening to the RC Phone in.

Of course the main topic has been the departure of St Pedro.

I am astounded of forehead with the absolute blindness of the callers and studio guests.

There is a large grey four legged animal with tusks and a trunk in the room.

And not content in taking up all the space, it’s leaving coal size shovel deposits on the floor and stinking up the room.

    Where’s the beef?

There are no reliable revenue streams to pay for a decent manager.

The soft loans are propping up the terminal patient.

No self respecting manager wants to be the skelping bhoy for the INVINCIBLES.

The fan base has unrealistic unachievable expectations based on their perception that “We are the People.” And how did that work for Pedro?

  12. Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday from a dark but dry and mostly clear skied, chilly East Kilbride. Only 5 more days left in October but 2 home games to look forward to. Brilliant times.

  13. Morning, just reading back seen a comment about souness being a ‘ kid on hard man’ growing up in Blantyre I knew bomber broon, and anyone who knew him knows he was anything but , used to annoy me that hard man patter about him . Thick well that’s definitely true

  14. Firstly some of the talk/posts about Brendan “learning” from our defeat in Munich due to our excellent play v Aberdeen ?

I would love that to be the case, but I do think its very pre mature and ill advised to compare Celtic’s performances via those two entirely different games. The “proof” in the pudding will MAYBE be this game v Bayern on Tuesday, as MAYBE then and only then we can judge whether Brendan and the Bhoys have “learned” anything ?

Not trying to be pessimistic, but we could in effect play very well this Tuesday v Bayern…only then to get done by some dodgy defending…or Ref etc…time will tell methinks ?

As for the Chump ( Hun or not ?) MOJO winding up Wee George etc….maybe MOJO would like to attend on the 11/11 and offer up some explanation……….he’s welcome to do so…but something tells me he won’t ?

Whether it is McInnes or not for Huns job…..if it’s true about Pedro ( it must be ) accepted a clause in his contract for a ONLY a 90 day pay off rather than whatever time was left on his contract IF the Huns decided to bin him…then McInnes will also be a real Chump ?

Any clause such as that should be seriously questioned by any guy being interviewed for the job….cos if I was faced with that “clause” at the time of interview etc…my first question would be ” Why….have you no money to pay me off IF Pedro’s signings don’t deliver with me in charge” ?

As for Chump Souness…..best ignored another complete corrupt, cheating, lying Chump !

You are spot on mate…I didn’t know Broon ( don’t want to), but I’ve heard and read the very same “Hard Man” crap in relation to other players and managers for many years, Wattie Smith being one of them.

He played for Dundee Utd in the 1970’s….he didn’t have any “Hard Man” image on the park from what I remember….just a

very average player with a wee club….simples.

i’ve heard and read the same about other so called “Hard Men”, it’s just a media image that they like to put out to suit the Hun supporters….simples !

  17. Since Neil Lennon is doing such a splendid job at Hibs….why isn’t he being mentioned for the Huns job ?

    Or maybe Chris Sutton ?

I’ve got a feeling they will go for wee Barry Ferguson and Alex Rae ( him from Star Trek) as his sidekick….after McInnes knocks them back.

McInnes would be mental to go to that madhoose !

Some on here have commented on McInnes views after getting humped by the Celtic, and how he was very nice about Celtic etc etc…..maybe he was to a certain extent BUT i thought his remarks about ” They “Celtic” TOOK my best player last season Hayes, and my best player this season Ryan Christie can’t play against them ” was a akin to a wee wean greetin.

i say this because, only a FEW DAYS ago BEFORE getting gubbed by The Famous Glasgow Celtic, he was asked about Steven McLean refusing to sign a new contract and wanting to leave this January or next summer for pastures new ( The Huns) ” ?

McInnes replied, ” I don’t have a problem with Steven refusing a new contract and wanting to leave etc”.

Could that lack of concern or unhappiness about McLean be a clear sign that McInnes is happy to sell to the Huns but not Celtic, especially if he knew that Pedro would soon be sacked…and the Huns job would be his sooner rather than later ?

IMO…he has BETTER players at Aberdeen than there are at Ipox, and if he gets the Hun job and wants rid of Pedro’s signings etc…but no one buys them…where is the money for McInnes or anybody else to improve that shower of crap gonna come from…Mr King ?

When Pedro arrived it waz obvious from his previous experience that he was not a stellar appointment.

He made the mistake of getting caught up in the watp, green boots and ‘best squad in the league’ nonsense. He pandered to the knuckle draggers when he should have been concentrating on picking a winning team.

As long as the Rangers board continue to promote watp then club will be distant second to the mighty Celtic. They don’t appear to understand this.

  22. So McInnes said that Celtic ‘took’ his best player ? No mention of the Million+ pounds he got in return then,(and GMS), and no mention that Christie is available to play against every other team they come up against. Realistically, they were never competing for anything other than second place in the league. If he can’t acknowledge that Celtic gave him the means to vastly improve his squad for this season, then he deserves all the scorn he’ll get.

McLean won’t be missed by The Dons. Most of their support are very ambivalent towards him. Too inconsistent, and anonymous against us again on Tuesday. Sevco are probably his level, much like his former team-mate, and newest would-be-hardman Ryan Jack.

  23. BIG JIMMY on 27TH OCTOBER 2017 7:17 AM

McInness wasn’t moaning about Hayes and Christie. He was simply pointing out the gulf in class between the two sides. His best player last season (Hayes) and his best player this season (Christie) aint good enough to make the Celtic first team.

  24. I’ll actually defend MCInnes’ comments the other night.

He began very graciously. And it must be a pisser when his best player from last season is a squad player for us and ‘his’ best player this season is watching from the stands.

Just last month he was claiming about a certain PR company sabotaging his chance of getting the job:

“In a wide-ranging and explosive interview with The Times, Davies has lifted the lid on the lies he insists have prevented him getting back into football.

He tells how a vendetta from an unnamed PR company denied him the chance to work at Ibrox and spells out what stopped him succeeding Ian Cathro at Hearts.”

My favouritest part of this interview is also the reason why I really want him to be the next manager in the malfunctioning revolving door at Ibrox:

“You’d think, over all this time, somebody like me should have had my hand bitten off — by Rangers, by all these English Championship clubs — because I am a very good football manager. Just look at my record. So let’s not be kidded here, it has been a smear campaign.”
