Looking for sharpness and formation variations

436

After a solid, if not unapproachable, home win last week, expectations are high that Celtic will qualify for the next round of the Champions League qualifiers in some comfort tonight.  Beyond the result, the area of most interest is the increase in sharpness, particularly in front of goal.

A week is a long time in preseason.  The players will be rested after the first leg and have had more conditioning sessions before leaving for Iceland.  Pay attention to any changes in formation.  Ronny slipped into a 4-4-2 briefly early in the second half last week.  I expect him to experiment a bit like this tonight.

thanks for the info – don’t known any members (just moved here), but will try and blag my way in…

  4. Reference to Paul67 and main article.

I tend to agree with up over goal.

There may be times this season that both Cifti and Griffiths are both on the pitch at same time.

However it is too simplistic to assume automatically that is experimentation to a 442…. My bet is that Cifti adopts the deeper role, and the shape remains Ronnys favoured: 4-2-3-1

  5. up_over_goal

Possibly, it takes quit a lot of time for individual players to understand their role in the 4231 hence why we started out very disjointed last season. The formation has so much variation in it and I agree more than likely whether with the ball or without or where the ball is on the park (ie which zone), it will be a variation on this. However, Fullbacks I think will be checking their wee inside run to stick to marking wingers and the two in defensive midfield will be playing deeper as protection to the high balls(and second ball from them). This leaves a larger gap between back and front and so the need for a target man to lead the line and an outball and usually you want a TM supported with pace, hence the possibility as P67 says 2 up front.

All of that said I have no idea, just how I saw some of the last game. I think the management team are confident, and with still showing respect are, indeed, experimenting. Hail Hail

Best players in the last forty years definitely brings Kenny Dalglish into the equation.

However,to be a ‘great’ player for us must mean at least three seasons so grudgingly no Kenny for me.

I’d go for,in no great order,

    Danny McGrain.

    Paul McStay.

    Tommy Boyd.

    Lubo Moravcik.

    Henrik Larsson.

Tommy just shades it in front of,say,Paul Lambert,Naka,Tommy Burns,Neil Lennon and a fair few others for holding us together in difficult times.

As of course did The Maestro.

Kenny Dalglish was with us for at least 6 years and must scored 150+ goals. The best Celtic player I saw and I go back to the fifties.

Kenny Dalglish joined us in 1967 and left in 1977 and is one of the best players I’ve seen wearing our colours.

But I arbitrarily suggested that to count as a great player for us means at least three years service. And he didn’t give us that in the last forty years.

And no,had the question been asked last year,I wouldn’t have made it a four-year qualifying period. That would have excluded Lubo!
