Looking for sharpness and formation variations

436

After a solid, if not unapproachable, home win last week, expectations are high that Celtic will qualify for the next round of the Champions League qualifiers in some comfort tonight.  Beyond the result, the area of most interest is the increase in sharpness, particularly in front of goal.

A week is a long time in preseason.  The players will be rested after the first leg and have had more conditioning sessions before leaving for Iceland.  Pay attention to any changes in formation.  Ronny slipped into a 4-4-2 briefly early in the second half last week.  I expect him to experiment a bit like this tonight.

  1. BMCUW,

So he qualifies, I don’t remember the question saying there were a minimum number of years a player needed to play to be considered.

The last time Jim,y Jonston player was 1975 so. I’m going to include him with maradona, so did bobby Lennox

  2. Traditionalist…,

He got a staunner, or something like that, stiff groin maybe

A glance through other CL qualifying results from last week, and last night, should be a sobering reminder that things do not always go to plan, and ‘nailed-on’ favourites don’t always win.

This is an away fixture first and foremost; it must be treated with respect, regardless of whether, or, not, we have a low opinion of the opposition.

This team, ineffectual as they looked, still managed to create THREE decent opportunities away from home , whilst being outplayed, at CP – it is not unreasonable to think that they may at least fashion the same number at home.

I believe the team should be set-up to get to half-time without conceding, whilst of course looking for any chance to increase our advantage.

There should be no ‘gung ho’ approach – if they happen to score first, at anytime during the game, things could get very nervy.

Would be great to get an early first goal, but remember we couldn’t get one at Celtic Park.

Let’s hope that we play the team and not the occasion – this IS our biggest game of the season. HH

Straight out the Walter Smith playbook.

In fact the book had only two pages, and one was a full page picture of a bus. Blue one.

    Unfortunately it was burned.

We are two or three classes above this team, with superior players, with far better awareness and ability.

There’s no point in sitting back and defending in depth.

We need to win in style to boost the team’s confidence, encourage the fans for the next leg and stick it to the blue noses in the Scottich media.

(That would be all of them)

Icelandic journo asked us to name Celtic’s best 5 players of last 40 years. I’d say Dalglish, McGrain, McStay, Larsson, Nakamura. Thoughts?

    …………………….

Dalglish, McGrain, McStay, Lubo, Henrik, Naka ……….. don’t forget that ole Lisbon Lion Bobby Lennox was still playing for us 40 years ago. I can’t keep it down to a mere five.

Like many on here, you are so enveloped in the ‘blue mist’ and your hatred of it, that you are seemingly incapable of rational thought.

Where did I say” sitting back and defending in depth”

I am sure that we are better than this team, however being better does not always ensure a result – Barca were FIVE times better than us at Celtic Park, but we still beat them.

Your attitude of let’s “stick it to the blue noses in the Scottich (sic) media”, makes us all thank God that people like you and the Celtic Trust are not running Celtic.

Sticking to any blue noses will be the furthest thing from the minds of all within the Celtic Football Club tonight – this IS our biggest and most important game of the season.

    Best 5

Danny, Kenny, Paul McStay, KoK, Lubo.

    Afternoon everyone,

Ever since the outside of the stadium has been renovated I have been trying to get a definitive list of all the past and present players who feature, but to no avail. Does anyone have a full breakdown of the featured players? Would be much appreciated as I won’t be down for a game until Dundee Utd in late October (and that’s a long time to wait!)

Going for 0-2 tonight, Virgil and Mackay-Steven.

Sitting here thinking,a la Charlie Nicholas.

When Roy Croppie was rooting through my record collection,I bet he didnae find anything by The Thompson Twins. That’s cos I always thought they were garbage, and to this day I mute the radio when they come on. Not a note nor a word worth my time.

Same wi Pastry. Not my idea of proper nourishment at all. Usually hiding garbage ingredients.

70 is not a favourite either. Bobby Davidson, cheating bassa, made sure of that. As did eleven Dutch guys.

And as for the promotion of pornography on the site,I think it should be banned. Exploitation, pure and simple.

So that’s me got my excuses in for refusing to reply to our current trolling quartet. Troll= scroll,IMO.

Anyone got any better reasons? I’m sure MOONBEAMS WD will give us an exemption on this one and allow us to compile one of the dreaded ‘lists’

But… I see he did post a photo of a very good old friend of mine, yesterday – Frankie Miller.

We go back in the music biz for around 45 years.

Talking about Frankie’s love of Celtic – I remember many years ago, going to take in a gig at Burns Cottage, Paisley Road Toll, owned at the time by another friend John Waterson.

Frankie was with an outfit Sock-em JB – with Jimmy Dewar, big John McGuinness and Henry Wright etc

Celtic were playing Rangers that day at Ibrox, and in those days it was pay at the gate – it was a lunchtime gig, and at that time the pubs shut at 2:30 – right on the button, we both ‘got our skates on’ and headed along the road to Ibrox.

It was pissing down during the whole match – it was a draw – we walked into the town and had a few pints in Denholms – full of music and and full of Celtic – halcyon days indeed.
