Looking for sharpness and formation variations

436

After a solid, if not unapproachable, home win last week, expectations are high that Celtic will qualify for the next round of the Champions League qualifiers in some comfort tonight.  Beyond the result, the area of most interest is the increase in sharpness, particularly in front of goal.

A week is a long time in preseason.  The players will be rested after the first leg and have had more conditioning sessions before leaving for Iceland.  Pay attention to any changes in formation.  Ronny slipped into a 4-4-2 briefly early in the second half last week.  I expect him to experiment a bit like this tonight.

Why play with only one up front tonight its not Barcelona we are playing but a pretty poor Icelandic team who are struggling to win at home in there own league.I think Griffiths and Cifti should play and we should look to attack this team as unlike the game at Parkhead if they hope to beat us they cant just park the bus but must come out and have a go.I think our forwards will get more space tonight so we should be positive. Is that the stupid system that won us the double last year?

Hmmm. Not sure a team with roughly 7 times the budget of its nearest domestic rivals can put its success down to a ‘system’.

Last weeks opposition depended on breakaways – any repeat tonight will not yield 3 goals – changing to a more attacking formation would result in more chances for our team

Other teams changed the play they played. We adapted the formation for each individual game as the manager is thorough. 442 with a strong line I’d play tonight only because of the the opposition’s tactics. Play an old fashioned 442 against anyone else these days, you’d be beaten.

don’t think they are that busy that they will turn people back, could be wrong, maybe one of our Inverclyde tims can confirm.

  8. At the time I was surprised when Keven Brodges took that gig, thems will go to any lengths to make there bitter bigoted point, and it only takes one.

Kojo? I hardly read his posts as they where hard work, and most time so are mine, but the guy was ok and harmless in my opinion, surprised he left cap in hand because of bullying mind you he didn’t seem the type, some gang up on you like kids in a playground, but it’s a blog so who cares, give as good as you get on here, with in the COC, but watch for creaps running to the teacher and grassing when they can’t handle it, and most of them are Huns anyway, so lurking Huns GIRFUYs, and cmon the hoops the night Hail Hail.

Icelandic journo asked us to name Celtic’s best 5 players of last 40 years. I’d say Dalglish, McGrain, McStay, Larsson, Nakamura. Thoughts?

Your not far away with the first 4.

Nakamura though? A genius at set plays, but personally I’d go with Lubo, to make up the 5.

There are many on the periphery of the top 5. Macavennie, Murder Mcloed, Tommy Burns, Paul Lambert, Petrov, Sutton, John Collins.

I’ve always been a believer in formations fitting players and not the other way around, although it does look as though 4-4-2 has had its day.

re. 4-2-3-1 – that was the formation that saw Celtic’s most successful recent European campaign in 2012-13. Lennon played a much more defensive style than Deila, with the two wide midfielders (think Mulgrew and Commons in the Barcelona win) almost playing as extra fullbacks.

Ronny began last year’s European qualifiers with 4-2-3-1, but got goosed by the Legia games and went 4-1-4-1 v Maribor – fine for the away leg, but a terrible formation to play at home when the crowd needed something to get excited about.

After that, it was 4-2-3-1 all the way. I very much doubt it’ll be anything else tonight.

powanfish – Greenock Celtic will be showing it and shouldn’t be a bother getting in….
