Magic from Madrid, share scams in 2012

1894

Atletico Madrid, happy for them?  Not an easy one.  I remember listening to the radio commentary the night we lost to them in the European Cup semi-final of 1974.  They, and Rapid Vienna a decade later, represented very unworthy competitors in European competition.

Both teams returned to Celtic Park in recent seasons.  Rapid picked up pretty much where we left them, an odious lot, but Atletico and their fans didn’t seem to bother about the past, they came and left wanting to play football.

As a boy I remember chastising old soldiers who fought the Germans during the war for their persistent aversion to modern Germans and Germany.  “They are a new people, nothing to do with the 30s and 40s”, I said.

It feels a bit ridiculous holding a grudge against Atletico.  Their achievement last night, and this season so far, has been fantastic.  Against the most powerful foes, they might just win the hardest league in the world and the Champions League.  This late in the season, that is a stunning prospect to still be on the table. They should be an inspiration to us all.

I see the media is (responsibly) alerting Celtic shareholders to the threat of a share scam apparently being perpetrated against unsuspecting fans by spivs and criminals.  Where were they in December 2012?

Just out of curiosity, was anybody at the Dynamo Kiev home game (1-2 defeat) in 1967/8?

I’ve never heard much about it, but it must have been like a punctured balloon after Lisbon 4 months earlier.

    …………………………………

I was there. You’re spot on, it was like a punch to the solar plexus. Kiev cam out of the traps very quickly and hit us with two goals. It was an uphill struggle after that. We pulled one back and almost did the business in the replay. The game was played in Tiblisi in Georgia ( moved from Kiev) and we were 1-0 up until fairly late in the game when they got an equaliser. They had a great player called Josef Szabo who was nicknamed Crazy Horse. Interestingly enough, he was the captain of Moscow Dinamo in Barcelona in 1972 when the Huns rioted.

Interesting that the last time Athletico made it to the semi-final of the Big Cup was against Celtic forty years of pain ago. Will never forgive the team of 1974, the most brutal to ever play at Celtic Park. Thank God for Bayern Munich, for the late equaliser in the final and for crushing Athletico in the Friday replay. Today’s Athletico are something else, a team that has actually improved and benefited from playing, and winning, the Europa League in recent years. Hopefully a Lisbon final, will bring out the best in whichever teams are in it.

I was there in ’74 and have maybe reached the stage where I don’t wish them any harm but, particularly with Jinky in mind’ I have no desire to see them win the CL

  5. I too was at the home Kiev game. Dynamo Kiev went missing on the morning of the game, no one knew where they were. (true) They had actually gone along to Glasgow Green pitches to practise some moves away from spying eyes, apparently the moves practised were the killers in the game.

    Atletico Madrid.

I watched the Atletico V Barca game in a packed Catania bar . The majority wanted Atletico to win . The reason -Diego Simeone ——fondly remembered for ” saving ” Catania from relegation in Season 2010 -2011.

The other side of the coin is that a San Lorenzo supporting neighbor thinks that Diego Simeone was a disaster at San Lorenzo.

I hope Atletico go on to win it.

  11. I will never wish Athletico Madrid anything other than the very worst. I was there in 1974.

That was the dirtiest team I have ever seen or ever will see and they have never expressed the slightest hint of remorse or shame at their actions that night or in the disgraceful treatment our club was subjected to in the second leg (which we should have refused to play.).

They’re completely beyond the Pale for me.

I’d support absolutely any team against them.

I will always have a soft spot for Bayern Munich for the way in which the Germans snatched victory away from the.Spanish and Argentinian thugs in the last minute of the final before trouncing them in the replay.

No ill feeling harboured towards Athletico , love the atmosphere in

Madrid where they are very much the peoples club and would like to see them pull off another result in the semi final.

If I had to pick a winner for the Champions League I’d go

    Athletico

    Bayern

    Real

    Chelsea

My ideal would be Athletico to win in the final against Real, and yes I saw Ruben Ayala.
