Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

Steve Bhoy.. Count me in .. Re the herald !Wilson stopped me buying it. That was BEFORE I saw his twitter chums. His end of yr 31 dec 2012 will take a lot of beating..

As will his June 15 2012, ” liquidation would be the end” article..

    Good work

  4. and onto my view of yesterday.

I loved my day out. The occasion , my own sense of a justice being done.

In Neil Lennon I trust. This team, with a a little addition, can go onto to be something extra special, they are just special now.

The MSM talking shite about the expectation that the Celtic support expected a treble.

No we didnt. We expected progress. We got it.

Our team won in Europe, and more, and that was the progress.

Our League performance was acceptable, we won well on several occasions, we did get entertained. The cups are cherries on top of the jelly and ice cream.

To yesterday, The Green Brigade, bloody magnificent. The Stan chant, and the banners. Absolutely superb. The rest of the support in the final 20 , marvellous.

Some doon-sides. I was sitting at the very front of 121, next to the tunnell. I listened to the stewerds and Police collude to end the progress of the banner at the wall to the main stand.

One senior steward was unhappy, but took instruction from the “match commander”.

also at end of game , some stewards behaviour in front of the main stand, pushing kids off the barriers is just stupid. Whats the difference. At the end of the celbratoins as well, some kids asked for scarves that were on the edge of the pitch, the bams stewrds gave a resounding “no”.

    again, whats the problem.

Lastly, shout out to another Auld Heid , Jimmy or Gerry Lewis, commentator for the Blind section in the main stand, that was a lovely chat at the end of the game, a brialliant moment, and more power to your elbow fella.

    Finally, finally.

Lenny coming out the tunnel, there are a few press pics, of fat saint stivs in the background, but due to angles, I look like i am biting NFLs arm.

But i like it all the same, lol

  5. Look get a grip and stop moaning about Keevins he’s trying to deflect from real problem and others keep biting.

We should be calling in and fu***** asking the media to ask this corrupt lot @ScottishFA why the Sevco licence hasn’t been revoked.

The biggest scandal in the history of Scottish football and all we’re worried about is Hugh Keevins, get a grip FFS

    I’m off to cool down.

  6. Evening Celts, fantastic news about wee Oscar and even more reason to be proud of the support everyone gave.

  9. I don’t think Delloite will take part in a whitewash.

Too big a multinational company to risk their reputation on keeping a bunch of backwater bigots out of trouble.

  10. Should be an interesting SFL1 meeting tonight,

Heard the Hamilton chairman who is not happy at Longmuir telling the SFA to stay out.

Turnbull Hutton and others will let their feelings be known to him about His & Ballantynes hun only agenda(IMHO).

Memo to DIV 1 Chairmen they are only interested in helping one club, the one club that is not even a full member and has brought nothing but shame to our game over this whole charade.

You have every right to be annoyed, the sfa corrupt Scottish football by their lack of governance and encourage the lie that we need the cheating Huns.

Scottish football is choking itself with the corruption at the sfa.

  21. During a large portion of their nine in a row run …we were so far off the pace as to be almost irrelevant as to the destination of the title

The Huns and their MSM lackeys made no comment on the lack of competition from CFC

his RELENTLESS articles since admin day should be around somewhere..

I actually kept some they were so bad. His June 15 2012 , dec 5/6 31 2012 were crackers in delusion.. His continual spin and use of the R name , drove me to stop the paper.. That, and I d a perusal at his regular twitter correspondence.. I reckon about a month ago the penny dropped for Wilson as since then his Sevco ebullience has been somewhat diluted ..

    Check those articles out..

Moreover, we COULD all just email the paper..
