Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

    SFTB,

    Like you, I’m a Celtic fan with an Irish background. Nevertheless, I found your post difficult to follow.

    I don’t recall ANY time that I used “that defence”.

    I gather that “the poster/s” to whom you refer is TSD (I thought it was Kojo): correct me if I’m wrong. So he made an anti-Moslem post? Then why was he slated for “racism? Why didn’t some critic correct any inaccuracies in his post – why didn’t you do so?

    BMCUWP,

    I stand corrected re the identity of the poster who was given a doing – TY.

    The original outburst to which I referred WASN’T racist – which BTW is a statement of fact & not a defence.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
    Invercelt,
    It was yourself who referred to it as racist-personally I thought it was just his usual sectarian garbage,and otherwise unworthy of comment.
    But,as I said,you surely aren’t defending what he said,nor even his right to do so?
    I’m another who has stopped buying The Herald
    I did after Whyte effectively used them as his propaganda outlet after he assumed control ….Grant , was his poodle …
    So, keevins calls any Celtic fan who says he / isn’t missing oldco LIARS….and he is now calling everyone on twitter IDIOTS ……….does anyone see the link to greengo here…!!
    Both of them will say ANYTHING to court controversy……..keevins, in particular, is a real low-life…
    Incidentally, did Celtic actually win the league and qualify for the last 16 of the CL….
    Get us out of this Country, Celtic Board……..they don’t deserve a Club of Celtic’s class / reputation and sporting integrity………in what other Country would any team receive this level of sympathy for cheating / scorning / shafting every other Club in any Country to such any extent, for so long……..disgusting and pathetic
  4. Guys,
    Thanks to all for the info on the huddle wall, unfortunately for me I started in the middle of the JS stand and went towards the south stand looking for it, next time I’ll go the other way.
    Hail Hail
  5. Great news about wee Oscar. leftclicktic – your video is fantastic!
    stevebhoy – I still buy the Herald but have been seriously considering giving it up. I can’t understand why Wilson has become their Sevco correspondant. He is openly biased and never gives any consideration to views other than the Sevco party line. Very poor journalism even by Scottish MSM standards.
    That said, I noticed that RW is missing from today’s Herald. Maybe he has taken a (pig) sickie after The Bhoys winning the league.
    Just heard that, after random testing of 45 horses on April 9, eleven horses from the Godolphin stable, including a classic contender, tested positive for illegal substances. That, as many on here know is Sheik Mohammed’s stable, the richest around. Let us see how the relevant authorities (is it the Jockey Club?) deal with him. Is he too big to fail?
  7. Ghuys and Ghirls
    Just logged and and skimming back it looks like there is good news for our WEE HERO OSCAR…..
    To save me reading back can someone update me please?
    Oh please please let my initial thoughts be right
    In disputes about property ownership,is it not usual for the
    assets to be frozen. Can a football club operate if their
    assets are frozen?
  9. Stevebhoy. At least you got a response. I emailed in, complaint about Richard Wilsons outright promotion of Sevco and advised them that I was cancelling my online subscription and future purchases of the Herald; which, I have kept to and got no response. Reading Wilsons column in the Herald seemed like reading the Ruggers news, not that I know what that was like. Lol but his outright bias was disgraceful and certainly not balanced. Give them he’ll.     I wasn’t being entirely serious.
    Pinset Mason took over/amalgamated with Mcgrigor Donald. Bankier used to be a partner at McGrigor Donald. I’m sure Leggo will be able to construe something from the link.
    “Orlit continues to monitor closely recent developments at Rangers whilst reserving its position at this time.”
    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
    I had wondered why the hurried departure of Green over the side of the Sevco rust bucket.
    It now makes sense. At the eleventh hour Secvo 5088 have bought themselves time as they think the pesky Singaporeans will hold off detonating the limpet mine as there is now a chance that they will get their money – or at least a promise of it – from a new man, as Green was refusing to pay.
    A bitter wee man clinging against hope that anybody has any interest in his slanted agenda.
    The simple solution is to starve him and him and his like and they will soon be gone.
    Brings a smile and a tear to your face at the same time. :-)
    The incredible strength of this bhoy and his family is amazing. Let’s hope and pray that he gains sufficient strength to allow him to get the treatment to reduce the chances of this evil cancer returning.
    Tomorrow, I just happen to be coming into possession of the new “Limited Edition” Wee Oscar black fearless (appropriate!) wristband.
  17. Man Utd 1 up and should have had a second there. Almost 3 minutes played!
    TTTT – I’ve gone for 4 or more goals in the game doubled with a Hibs win against Aberdeen.
  18. Bhoys, I apologise for the length, but I am about to post my reply to the editor of the Herald and I would appreciate your criticisms. BMCUW, you have mail – this is a first draft, I suppose;)
    Ok, gimme one minute, on iPad, very complicated!
    Hail Hail!
  19. In his Herald article , “Analysis: how Green couldn’t survive breakdown in relations behind scenes,” which was published on Saturday 20 April 2013, Mr Wilson informs the reader (emphasis added) that ‘ Charles Green has been tainted by his association with Craig Whyte… Mr Whyte has cast doubt on the validity of the sale of the business and assets to Sevco Scotland… Mr Green and Mr Ahmad have suffered from the perception they were capable of colluding with such a deceitful character as Mr Whyte. There is no suggestion Mr Whyte has any involvement with the club now…’
    For some of us, Mr Green was tainted when, on live television, he admitted using racist language. Mr Wilson mentions that issue later in his article, but evidently feels that association with Mr Whyte is the greater evil. This is reinforced by the reference to perceptions of Green’s collusion with ‘such a deceitful character’. Still, I am sure that many other supporters feel the same way as Mr. Wilson.
    There is a suggestion, contrary to what Mr Wilson thinks, that Mr Whyte is involved with the club now; that is why Whyte has cast doubts on the validity of the sale. Those doubts might well, perhaps as the result of threatened legal action, result in the assets being returned to the control of the beneficial owner of Sevco 5088, which Mr Whyte claims is him.
    Those of us who favour balance in our reading material have had cause to question Mr Wilson many times in the past. Before being locked out by your internet pay-wall, I had the dubious pleasure to read the following for the second time…
    ‘Ally McCoist’s team must prepare for the next stage of their journey’; Richard Wilson,
    Monday 1 April 2013
    … The club was dealing with a crisis last year, so the recruitment process was rushed, not least because only six players turned up for pre-season training and nobody was certain that Rangers would be granted the transfer of their SFA licence.
    (Rangers’ licence was not transferred as suggested above. The new club are Associate Members of the SFL; they do not have audited accounts and were refused admission to the SPL when the club they sought to replace went out of business. So it wasn’t ‘their’ SFA licence, it used to belong to another former member club.)
    Wilson continues, ‘ …The coming months will define McCoist as a manager, since how he builds his team, the worth of his ideas and his resources will be judged…’
    (Mr McCoist has quite a lot of management experience, albeit, not much to show for it in terms of managerial success. Perhaps Mr Wilson might write an article which questions quite how a manager in the fourth tier of Scottish football , yet with the second-highest wage bill in the country, failed to take his team on a Cup run? Even the Ramsden’s Cup? What about an article on the likelihood of Mr McCoist joining the ranks of football’s unemployed?)
    The financial crisis (he continues) was an opportunity for Rangers to restore the fundamental values of the club: a focus on youth development, a shrewd and properly resourced scouting network, and a commitment to excellence, as well as the necessary commercial regrowth.
    (If this wasn’t so painful to read, it might almost be funny. Financial crisis? Does he mean liquidation? The fundamental values of the club… Mr Wilson wants us to accept that Rangers benefitted from the transfer of their licence. One assumes that Mr Wilson accepts that Mr Green purchased Rangers’ history along with his (claimed) purchase of the assets. Can Mr Wilson please make clear the names of those players who best represent those ‘fundamental values’ of youth development, ‘shrewd’ scouting and can he please share some of that commercial whizz-bangery which so epitomised the previous incarnation of the club before its untimely demise at the hands of the liquidators?)
    The article concluded thus; ‘Rangers need to implement a vision, so that when the club returns to the top flight it will be sustainably run as well as competitive. This season was about making the most of an awkward, difficult situation, of moving on, essentially. It is now a time for ideals and grander statements of intent. The next stage of the journey is about to begin.’
    This pompous, faux-Churchillian hyperbole belongs, at best, in a fanzine, not in the pages of a self-respecting newspaper. And that, really, is my problem. I don’t mind which club Richard Wilson supports, or which incarnation, or which boardroom faction. I just want him to be reasonably factual when he writes, and I’d appreciate if the same factual approach to other clubs and issues in Scottish football. I have tried to adopt a measured approach, and to explain a complex situation as clearly as possible. I hope my researches have allowed my to criticise Wilson’s writing in a fair and reasonable manner. Perhaps, if such an approach was encouraged, writers might investigate stories, eve football ones, rather than blindly accepting statements issued by financiers and club operators as if they are issued on tablets of stone. And perhaps such an investigative approach might encourage the general public to question the motives and actions of those who stand to benefit from business of football.
    Went through my wee tin tonight. You know the thing you put badges and stuff and currency change from old holidays and trips in. Found an old penny my dad gave me but not any old penny it’s got the date 1888 on it. To think Brother Walfrid could have touched it. It might have been used to pay to see the Celtic ! I f I keep it I will surely lose it. Do you think I should send it to the Celtic museum? Don’t want money or anything just want to make sure it’s preserved. Anybody know contact at Museum and if they would want it? Cheers Pinta
