Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

The only thing they will be doing at hampden is trying to figure out a way to keep them in the SFL.

They shouldn’t have been allowed in the leagues in the first place. They will never kick them back out. I don’t see it happening under any circumstances. Rangers went as close as they will ever come to disappearing. It’s clear that operation save Scottish football is in full flow.

    Very sad

    *******

You are probably correct. However, they are much closer to reaching the point of no return than they were this time last year.

Then they had the three shells lined up on the table and tried to bamboozle everyone.

Now, by their own revised and partially ignored rules, they are exposed.

They ruled definitively on Whyte. If it is shown that he was still involved with them, through Sevco5088, then it will take a decision even more blatant than any that have gone before, to extradite Them.

It will be the courts that will decide, not the SFA.

If fraud is proven to have happened then it is the chop for Ogilvie and co.

A possible get out could be a prolonged delay in determining who is Sevco5088’s daddy.

The more that is emerging on this fiasco, the more I admire Celtic’s restraint, in spite of pressure from all sides to get involved publically.

  2. Today we have lost Llanelli football club which is so much part of Jock Stein’s history which is very sad.

However, the world moves on and a new club is being developed in New Jersey with Croatian roots. It is called Garden State Croatia , a name based on the nickname for New Jersey. What caught my attention was this statement that the club that:

“We welcome all players from different states, from all continents of the world who love the game, display passion for competition, promote fair play and look to create a bond of friendship”

    http://www.croatiantimes.com/news/Sports/2013-04-17/32998/A_new_Croatian_football_club_grows_in_New_Jersey

Sounds like the type of statement made 125 years ago in St Mary’s. I wish the new club well!.

Croatia naturally sides with Celtic but the signings of Prso and Jelavic raised the profile of Rangers (when they were still Rangers). One good thing was that the newspapers carried reports of Scottish football which was fun to read when I am out there (in my very basic Croatian and with a dictionary beside me).

If anyone wants to look up a Croatian dictionary for the word Prso – you will find the nearest word is Prsa – which means “a breast” I deliberately mispronounced his name to a bored customs office who say my Glasgow passport and he had a good laugh.

So glad to hear that Oscar has the all clear – best news of all.

First post since we became champions, despite many attempts to do so last night. The server kept telling me I was too fast – that is certainly a first for me.

Well done to all connected with celtic, and news about wee Oscar certainly brightened up my day even more. HH

Time for the @ScottishFA to revoke Sevco’s licence

    ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE

While Brother Ogilvie is still in situ

What can be done about this?

It has gone beyond ridiculous and is now verging on criminal (IMHO)

Well done Oscar, as someone mentioned earlier get the wee chap to raise that League Championship Trophy, he was a major part ot the season

  6. SFTB,

Like you, I’m a Celtic fan with an Irish background. Nevertheless, I found your post difficult to follow.

I don’t recall ANY time that I used “that defence”.

I gather that “the poster/s” to whom you refer is TSD (I thought it was Kojo): correct me if I’m wrong. So he made an anti-Moslem post? Then why was he slated for “racism? Why didn’t some critic correct any inaccuracies in his post – why didn’t you do so?

    BMCUWP,

I stand corrected re the identity of the poster who was given a doing – TY.

The original outburst to which I referred WASN’T racist – which BTW is a statement of fact & not a defence.

It is tradition on this site to welcome new posters with the scurrilious accusation that they may be a follower of The Rangers.

  10. Brilliant news about Wee Oscar , what a fighter.

Great idea about bringing him and his family to Celtic Park , if its ok with his Mum and Dad.

    Well done Oscar.

Two champions in two days. Oscar Knox and the nearly as famous Glasgow Celtic!! The best news ever. HH.

  13. I suppose Ivanovic should count himself lucky that Suarez didn’t mishear the training ground instruction to put some bite in their tackle. What if Suarez had thought he said “on” – Ouch!

Rangers have brought in law firm Pinsent Masons & forensic investigators to investigate connections between C.Whyte & club personnel.

  16. The Battered Bunnet on

So, it’s Pinsent Masons investigating ‘Rangers’ this time.

Makes a change from the usual brown brogued variety.

  17. Gosh, where are the poor forensic investigators supposed to begin?

Apart from Craig Whyte telling everyone he has a connection to Charles Green and Charles Green admitting it, they haven’t even got a sniff of a lead.

  18. Great – I am now initiated. Look forward to sharing stories and the banter with my new friends..
