Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill, Strachan and now Lennon

913

Good afternoon, champions!  If you enjoy your history……….

Yesterday, Celtic retained the league title, which has been a rare achievement for much of our history.  We won six in a row during the first decade of the 20th century, then won four in a row (1914-17) during the Great War, but it would be another 50 years before Celtic retained the league title, on 6th May 1967.

Jock Stein re-wrote all the rules during his nine in a row era but after that ended in 1974,  Billy McNeill retained the tile in 1982 and it would be another 20 years before Martin O’Neill retained it, the only time he did so.

Gordon Strachan then set about writing his own chapter in our history, retaining the league in 2007 and 2008, while becoming only the third manager in our history, after Willie Maley and Stein, to win three in a row (history awaits you, Neil).

Neil Lennon now joins a select band of Celtic managers, Maley, Stein, McNeill, O’Neill and Strachan, who have retained the league title.

In total Celtic have retained the league title 22 times but yesterday was only the fourth time since nine in a row.  It was the sixth time in total we have won two in a row.

Remarkably, of the 13 times Celtic have retained the league since 1919, this is only the third time it has been achieved at Celtic Park, the other occasions being when we beat St Mirren in 1982 (remember unwelcome half time news from Pittodrie over the PA?), and Livingston, to win the 2002 title.  Lazy journalism prevents me from confirming which of the pre-1920 titles were won at Celtic Park.

This is your history, I hope you enjoy the memories as much as I do.

The Andrea Kearney Fund, which supports women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy, is holding its annual dinner at the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow on Saturday 1 June.  The event is excellent value with a cracking line up of entertainment, including Ricky Ross, Michelle McManus and Lou Hickey.  The fight against this disease goes on….

You can book a table here.  Look forward to seeing you at the dinner.

Enjoying the incredulous Sevco 5088 events, more on that later.

Apart from Wee Oscar and Family’s brilliant news – that has endowed me with the biggest smile of the day. Mibbe you could work in the chucklesome comment re 845 and 845 being the only sum required at the till? 16th or 17th Century makes no difference for they are numpties. Except for Edward Ursulas – he’s a good guy/exception.

The same team hold the record for the number of attempts at trying to win the European Cup but never having done it.

(They share that record with linfield funnily enough)

  3. Great goal by RVP tonight. I remember an exact replica in a game against St. Johnstone around 1981/82, a midweek League Cup match. Davie Provan hit a 50 yard pass from the centre line just in front of the stand (only stand in those days) and Charlie Nicholas took it first time on the volley. Keeper just looked.

Would count amongst my favourite Celtic goals but was not filmed so it got lost in the mists of time. Wonder if anyone remembers it or has a similar goal in their memory?

  4. ‘hobbits from the emerald isle’? Seriously, why is this guy still allowed on here? He’d be banned from followfollow as too anti Irish.

Thought they would ignore it hence the reason why I wondered off to the Hibs game which was awful.

I don’t understand anyone reading either of them.

‘Couple a fannies’ was surely inspired by them.

  8. Tallbhoy, that eintracht frankfurt game can be used as a great wind-up to any huns who you know are up on their history.

You just say to them, Celtic have been to 4 European Cup semis, you guys havent even been to one. To which he says “On yes we have! – in 1960”. Your coup de grace is “what was the score?”, and he then has to deliver the punchline – works every time.

Though you do need to know a smart bear for this to work!

Huns also hold the record for being the first ever team not allowed to defend their European trophy.

(They were banned due to their fans rioting – what a surprise)

  12. Embdy heard from Philvis? Maybe this new ‘posting too quickly’ has REALLY got to him!

To the “scroll by and ignore the bigots” chaps on here.

If you seen them having a bigoted rant at someone on the street would you “stroll by and ignore them”?

Same principle. Anyway. Definitely off oot now.

    Love and kisses.

  19. My old man told me that when the 1960 EC final came round, the Glasgow press were generally of the opinion that Frankfurt would soundly beat Real Madrid, based on their 12-4 humbling of oldco in the semis…

…plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose…

  20. Haven’t posted for a while but lurk when I can. Great day yesterday, but the news on Wee Oscar is even better.

Seen St Stivs post earlier re:banner and police/steward conversations he heard. I was in 123 yesterday near where the banner passed by, was passed down and sent back. At the time we were laughing thinking the wee bhoys runnin around with it took an age, and hadn’t read the script about passin it on to the main stand.

The stewards or whoever was in that far corner obviously took some time ‘guiding’ them. Absolutely shocking!

    Anyway onwards and upwards, Here we go . . . . .

I don’t remember it, but my trustworthy ‘Celtic Football Companion’ does!

The League Cup was still using the group format.

We lost 2-0 at St.Johnstone away on the 12th and won at home the week after 4-1.

Celtic scorers were, McGarvey 17min, Provan 21min and 48min and Nicholas 65min.

    Att 14,600.

A steakbake to the person who can name the St.Johnstone player who scored in both games.
