Malky, Craig, redundancies

1217

I got it wrong on Malky MacKay.  In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.  That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”

Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.

Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions.  Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.

So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested.  You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal.  Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.

Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism.  Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?

I have some sympathy for their new management.  They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.

Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value?  No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash.  There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety.  By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley.  He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.

Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club.  I fully endorse his views.

King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces.  His rantings are not part of a coherent plan.  His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.

Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income.  Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

Worth a look if you haven;t been in them. They are a bit cheaper than the ones in town centre. The pubs around them are pretty garbage though. 10 mins from Haymarket though.

  2. Philbhoy, I think PL wants both, the Hun income & the CL income. On a serious note I know a lot of Tims whose preferred option is a permanently weakened Hun outfit in the SPFL.

Whether you agree with macjay1′s view or not, it is a sincerely held view from a Celtic man who was at Celtic Park long before most of this blog was born.

The bile that has come from certain posters who disagree with him is something that would never have been tolerated here.

This place has been hijacked by a faction who are anti Celtic in many of the club’s positions.

Whilst Scottish football is probably scheming to facillitate a third incarnation from Govan, this blog seems intent in creating internal discord.

Can’t get my head round it.

Will the activist Celtic support once again rely on other clubs’ supporters to thwart the SFA?

    Don’t back against it.

And no, I don’t attend Celtic Park regularly, so the usual suspects can discount my opinions as being invalid.

I’m away back to TSFM blog, where the important football matters are discussed.

It may help if we sign the best ones before they are snapped up down south. Russell, McCarthy, Fletcher types who are low risk and young enough to have some resale value even if they don’t succeed at Parkhead.

No new scouting system needed for that!

Perth go 2-0 up after an hour and before the restart they bring on a boy, game kicks off on 60:33 and on 60:42 the sub launches himself into a straight leg, studs up tackle…. after the melee the ref shows him a straight red….. Is this a record for a sub receiving a red card ? He was on the pitch for 9 seconds of game time !!!!

The Dalry arms must be long gone. The pubs around there now as pretty awful to be fair. They rely on the Jambo trade. I believe Dickens has a Hearts museum better than Hearts themselves have. The guy who owns it is a big Jambo and the museum is upstairs of the pub. Few boys I know rave about it. I have always fancied a look but had a pint in there once and the place is full of gadgeys. Haymarket has all gone a bit upmarket since the trams arrived. I like the Southside for going for a pint. Great wee folk pub there called the Royal Oak where jamming sessions can be superb.

Derry City’s Michael Duffy will spend time with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, next week.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 international only recently signed a two-year contract extension with his home town club, keeping him at the Brandywell until 2016, so any move to Parkhead would involve a transfer fee.

Duffy, who last season scored 16 goals in 39 appearances, would join the recent list of City players who have made the move to Glasgow like Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn.

If 20-year-old did make the move to Celtic it would be a massive blow to Peter Hutton, as he continues to look to strengthen his squad for the 2015 season.

Although defender Aaron Barry has re-signed, the likes of Barry McNamee, Barry Molloy and Stephen Dooley are all still undecided, with the ex-Coleraine man, in fact, on trial with Skybet League One side Wycombe Wanderers, while Danny Ventre and Ciaran Gallagher have left the club.

    Pertinent post.

Free speech is fine as long as its what certain posters want to hear. What is the criteria for posting on here ? Does macjay1 break it.?

As you say a man of his long standing Celtic credentials should be given the respect he deserves; irrespective of his views as long as they are within acceptable parameters.

You now realise that you will probably be on the list.
