Malky, Craig, redundancies

1217

I got it wrong on Malky MacKay.  In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.  That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”

Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.

Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions.  Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.

So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested.  You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal.  Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.

Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism.  Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?

I have some sympathy for their new management.  They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.

Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value?  No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash.  There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety.  By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley.  He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.

Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club.  I fully endorse his views.

King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces.  His rantings are not part of a coherent plan.  His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.

Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income.  Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

You must have the festive spirit in you saying you have sympathy for the management team at Ayebroke. You must be jesting surely.

I know I’m bitter but hey, have a word with yourself. The entire organisation that is rangers is made up of horrible people, who have done horrible things to lots of people and who are a disgrace to Scottish Football, humanity and themselves!!

    Sympathy be buggered!!

The sooner they and their kind are confined to history the better for all mankind, and that’s a fact!

No we are still a little short as of the morning – maybe a few hundred needed.

If anyone wants to support this initiative to publish a full page statement from Celtic Supporters in the Sunday Herald ahead of our journey into the unknown to play a new club from the lower divisions for the very first time in the League Cup Semi Final then you can purchase a raffle ticket at £5 per ticket at http://www.cqnbookstore.com

You can choose to buy 1, 2, 4 or even 10.

From what I heard today we might be needing a second page!

  4. King Lubo@16.56 really is King Lubo.

I’m with you. Sooner they admit to being consigned to history, the better for all concerned. The Augean stables can then be cleansed.

I’m more worried about the next 3 years.

MA backed ‘flat pack’ Sevco III spending a wee quick £25m to ensure a decent squad, a decent ( different obviously!) manager and honest mistakes get them a 1st title and CL monies.

  9. Barcabhoys update on questions about the “glib and shamless liars2attemts to get money back from BDO.

Following on from my post this morning

This has generated a blizzard of discussion on twitter . 3 questions in particular need answering.

1 King was an investor in Murray Sports. He is claiming deception by Murray. Why is his equity investment deemed by BDO to be different to all other shareholders

2 King was quoted on March 7 2012

“My own present position- I seem to be one of the few people who actually invested cash into the club. I have made a claim of GBP 20 million on the basis of non-disclosure by the then Chairman, David Murray, of Rangers true financial position as far back as 2000. Other shareholders may feel deceived like I do and wish to take similar action. (David Murray will no doubt argue to the contrary and the merits of this will be dealt with in due course in the appropriate forum.) For present purposes however, I simply want to advise the fans and fellow shareholders that any benefit I receive from my claim will be fully reinvested into the restructured football club. I remain 100% committed to the Rangers football club and will do whatever I can to advance its interests”

The claim therefore was made in plenty of time to be included in the initial list of creditors provided by Duff & Phelps. Did King actually lodge the claim as he stated he did ?

3 On the assumption King was being honest on March 7 2012, when he stated he had made a claim, why did D & P not include this in the creditors list. Why in turn did King not demand it’s inclusion as it could have ensured the success of the CVA. What did King do to persuade BDO that his claim was valid and did he attempt to do the same with D&P . If not, why not

The liquidation of Rangers in 2012 and the potential liquidation of RIFC could be seen as essential to Kings personal ambitions to own “Rangers ” at some stage. If he could have saved the CVA and refused because of personal ambition , how will that be viewed by Rangers supporters. On the other hand if he was denied by D&P shouldn’t he be making that clear.

Worthington state that they have a prima facie case that the sale of the assets to Sevco Scotland was illegitimate, and that their (acquired) rights were unlawfully nullified.

Notwithstanding that, the Administrators were in principle entitled to sell them unencumbered. That was their function. It was who they sold them to that’s at issue.

If Worthington stand their claim up, then over to the legal system to figure out a remedy. I cannot comprehend a solution.

ALLEGATIONS that Glasgow City Council broke the law in historic land deals involving Celtic Football Club cost taxpayers £280,000, it has emerged.

It is understood the hours spent responding to queries from the European Commission and dealing with Freedom Of Information requests from the public following the accusations have left Scotland’s largest local authority with the deficit.

Council officials were also required to travel to Brussels on more than one occasion – funded from the public purse – as part of preliminary inquiries into claims Celtic benefited from ‘state aid’.

The Commission did not take the complaint as far as opening a formal investigation.

It comes as the authority is facing cuts and savings of as much as £150 million in the next three years, with the impact falling on frontline services and jobs.

The figure spent by the authority on dealing with the allegations is the equivalent to 10 classroom teachers.

Lawyers close to the case have also said the only substantial grounds to appeal against the Commission’s decision are if a ‘competitor’ of Celtic’s asks Europe for the case to be re-opened.

Essentially this amounts to another Scottish football club, none of whom were involved in the 11-month inquiries ahead of last week’s decision by the European Commission not to proceed any further with the allegations.

One prominent member of Ukip in Scotland has spoken of a potential appeal via social media sites.

One source said: “No clubs made any attempt to get involved in the case and there no reports any did.

“It is highly unlikely any would because they may not want to attract attention to anything that may be perceived as assistance they may have received from local authorities or other public bodies over the years.”

The complaints focused on a series of land purchases around the city’s east end by Celtic from the council, primarily during the last decade, with the accusation the club secured the plots at a knockdown rate.

Last year, the council agreed to sell land valued at more than £750,000 to Celtic.

The claim was this put Celtic at a competitive advantage over other clubs.

A council spokesman said, “We are pleased the Commission has found in our favour following its consideration of the claims of state aid. We will make no further comment.”
