m6bhoy,
I have had many more worse nights supporting Celtic than tonight
————————————————————————————————————————-
It’s not just tonight that has sickened me. It’s the realisation of what we now are and will remain as long as the current shower of dullards remain in control. I remember when the plc was there to support the team. Now it is the other way round. That’s not the club I was brought up to follow. Sure they wear green and white hoops (though not tonight obviously) and play at Celtic Park but that’s not the point. Everything within the club has to be sacrificed at the altar of the balanced bank statement. Everything else including what happens on the park is secondary to the plc objectives. The club has lost its heart and soul and me sadly.

Evening all,
Well we made a complete hash of that.I have real problems believing that we so easily beaten by Malmo (FFS, Malmo!!!). The only players, in my opinion, to even get pass marks were Craig Gordon and Jamsie. What the heck happened to our midfield??
Our only attacks came from the right side…nothing was coming from the left and I put that down to Ronny picking Charlie ahead of Izzy. I know Charlie did his best but Izzy has the speed to get down the wing and link up with the left midfielder (ie Armstrong) while Mulgrew doesn’t. This left us completely lob-sided and ineffectual.
If we have CL ambitions we have to prove it by paying for players who have the ability and experience to play at that level. Cant see that happening going by recent experiences.
Ah well, there’s always next year in the meantime its back to SPL football and hope we can do something in the Europa League.

Circa 30million in potential revenue flushed down the lav over 2 seasons. In most if not all business, apart from Celtic PLC, this would result in a number of pin stripe suited arses being booted out the door. The PLC strategy is clearly failing.

Last post was about a year ago and attracted the usual and expected responses, which ,also as usual, didn’t bother me. I call it as I see it and appreciate that others do the same.
Then I questioned RD’s style of play and how well it was suited to the players available.
He has certainly made more advances than I expected and has earned a degree of respect.
My basic opinion has not changed, he is not up to the job.
His mantra is “when we play to our (my) system and at our best we are unbeatable”.
No-one is unbeatable.
When we don’t play at our best within that system, he doesn’t seem to have any options.
NL was very good and quick to change formations and tactics when his starting line-up wasn’t working.
I can’t think of any successful manager at a high level who did not have the ability to be flexible, to see other tactics, to identify other solutions.
RD’s system, when it works, is fine, but he is, in my opinion, a one-trick pony.
Yes many players (all, apart from Craig Gordon)) didn’t measure up tonight.
My firm conviction remains that Celtic is a far better team tha Malmö and that our abysmal failure owes more to our manager’s failings than the players although they can’t be absolved
Craig Gordon plus 10 invisible men ain’t gonna win much.
As usual, no apologies and best wishes to all.

Bitton and Johansen parade around Scottish football most weeks without being challenged (literally), allowing them as many touches of the ball as they need before controlling it and finally making a pass.
Malmo had the wherewithal to press them both into making decisions they’re not either used to, or capable of, i.e. quick decisions with quick feet and quick brains.
They were both shown up tonight as players from a bygone era, when players could stroll 30 yards up the pitch without being tackled, if they can’t adapt, they’re not good enough.

Trying to be pragmatic.
I really think we need to rethink our scouting system.
Are the Plc board culpable for tonight? Partly, but so are the players and management. Realistically, we have a limited budget so the prospect of us signing players in excess of £5m is pie in the sky no matter how much we want that to happen.
We play in what is widely recognised as a footballing backwater yet many of our recent signings have come from Dun Utd. GMS, Armstrong and Ciftci aren’t bad players but it’s a real gamble hoping that they’re good enough to make a palpable difference in Europe.
Our incomers from abroad have been a mixed bag. We’ve uncovered some real gems in Wanyama and VVD but there’s been an awful lot of dross too.
It’s time to broaden our scouting network and dig out the diamonds.

Ach well Europa League it is then. A shame but thats the level we are at. No point getting stuffed in the CL it would be embarrassing and counter productive. I am a bit worried about his love for Johansen tho but surely soon even he will see what more and more fans are starting to notice. I still love the Celtic tho and am already looking forward to the next game if only to get this one out of the system. Hail Hail bhoys and always keep the faith.
antipodean red (10:04pm):“ten teams played in tonight’s qualifiers, only one team did not score”
Equally, only one team who played away in the second leg succeeded in qualifying tonight, and that was Valencia, who play in the best league in Europe. Celtic play in the second best league in Scotland.
Summa of Sammi (10:13pm):“to ask them to Zonally Mark at Corners was…….”
I don’t believe for a second that a professional footballer would fail to pick up or challenge an attacking opponent at a corner kick because he had been told to play zonally. If the players had performed on the pitch at a level commensurate with their earnings, then Celtic would have won tonight. Ronny put a team out that should have been able to win the tie comfortably against considerably less well resourced opponents. The fact that the players failed to win the tie is entirely the fault of the players.
It is somewhat ironic that Virgil has earned his “promotion” after such a gross failure!
So, on to the Europa League…

The difference being Basel were a good side as were we in those days; Malmo are not a good side and neither are we now. So in trying to draw parallels between tonight and 2002/03 we are not comparing apples with apples.
Basel went on to put Liverpool out of the group stages of the CL that season handing them over to us to put them out of the uefa cup.
I would be astounded in Malmo got 3 points in the CL group stages. They are rotten and a shambles defensively. Unfortunately we are not as good as that. I wait to see who we get in the el but think we have out work cut out getting out the group stages.
Tonight I console myself not by thinking of season 02/03 but of thinking at least we won’t get pumped senseless by bayern Munich Madrid etc. shame that it comes to that. How can Gordon strachan coach a team with Caldwell et al to beat Milan and Donetsk yet Ronny can’t get enough out of the much heralded van dijk v Maribor Malmo etc?
Funny game football, but I’m not laughing tonight.
I would agree that we cannot exclusively sign young possibly saleable assets.
Totally agree we need experience now and then. Gordon Strachan used that strategy to good effect.
RWE on
Pretty hard to believe that we put out our tallest, best heederers in our back four and we conceded two goals from heeders inside our six yard box in front of goal.
Carvalho showed us last week what he was going to do at a corner by creating their second goal.
We were not as cute/street smart as they were tonight either, as it seems European football means a different approach. We were huff and puff whereas they were huff, puff and fall over. Inga Berget did it all night, as did Djurdjic, while Rosenberg fouled everyone around him him all night long. Even had Clarke Carlisle on Fox Soccer 2Go saying after Rosenberg’s fourth foul on our clearing defenders in the first half – that he was glad he hadn’t been carded as they were all “honest” fouls. There’s an opening at pacific Quay for you Clarke.
In attack our crosses were over hit or under hit consistently. Shots from outside the box were rare and either tame or way off target, and our corners were poor overall. Our “goal” should clearly have been given, regardless of what some claim Leigh Griffiths attempted to do to their keeper.
We are joined in the Europa League by Rapid Vienna, Monaco and Basel who all went out tonight. There’ll be more big names joining us tomorrow night too. CSKA Moscow or Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen or Lazio, Man Utd or Brugge..
Spain now have five teams in the Champions League Group Stages. Valencia tonight and Sevilla for winning last years Europa League join Bara, R. Madrid and A. Madrid.
Jason Denayer’s move on loan to Galatasaray means he will play in the Group Stages too. Big factor in Man City’s vetoing of any loan move back to Celtic I guess.
TRC, sorry that we didn’t win the tie for you tonight, but frankly your situation puts all of this into perspective.

The stodginess of our play tonight was unforgivable.
Malmo were better than us in every department, except goalkeeper- and that’s with them having two dodgy centre halfs.
Thank you , Virgil, but, goodbye.
Buy a no nonsense, no frills, horse of a CB, who can organise a defence.
Very annoyed by tonight’s performance, but it underlines our level.
Chris Sutton called it right all night.

The red in the 3-0 juventus cheats
That red tonight
50 years of Hun refs cheating us blind
Garbage!
The Celtic jersey does not shrink to fit inferior players
My team lost tonight and I am disappointed. Very, very disappointed, in fact but I don`t need a scapegoat nor do I feel a kneejerk reaction is helpful. In fact, I believe we have progressed as a team in the past year and will continue to do so over the next year ( but Virgil will be a great loss if he goes) .
I said a few days ago that much can be revealed re a poster`s personality from his posts. Much can also revealed about the character of a person in adversity.A love of Celtic excuses some reactions but some others are simply hunnish in their tone. I would happily lose that sort from the Celtic support.
Celtic will still be Celtic on Saturday and I will still enjoy going to Celtic Park on that day to watch my team.
Goodnight all,
JJ
No Ronny out from me. Need a big presence up front to support griffiths. That means spending some cash. Absolute gutted. Johansen was garbage. Keeps him on and takes Forrest off. Baffling decision. Fuck the Europa league. No sevconian better start me tom.
Red=ref
Never felt so low, I’ve followed Celtic since I was a wee boy! Went home and away thru the Brady ,macari years and suffered the Huns years of cheating and financial doping, but I have never felt like chucking it until tonite.
My misses and wee bhoy will be there on sat, I won’t. I won’t be there for any Europa leg games and prob won’t be back till I can see some progress. We have 3 main stand tkts and I love Celtic, but I won’t be takin for a fool,
The second half performance was a disgrace! Too many players let us down! I will say one last thing though! Stefan johanson will get Ronny the sack!
Blaming Ronny is wrong.
1) he was a cheapo appointment
2) he has improved the team
3) he is working with a risk averse Board incapable of managing risk.. Therefore he is not fully supported
4) rookies make rookie mistakes. Ronnie has never been anywhere need tonight’s level before joining Celtic
5) he is lumbered by an absolute numpty assistant not of his own choosing

Get well Dan
