Just watched it again (fast fwd now and again)
Their front 2 closed down or back 4 every time Craig Gordon gave them the ball
Every week we play from keeper to one of the back 4 and we build from their – its the foundation of how we play
Malmo decided to shut down that play – fair enough not tactical genius just sensible by them
But the big worry – we did not know what to do VVD and Boyata at a loss – neither Brown or Bitton came back to get the ball – we end up humping it and very rarely won the second ball
Its at this point you need your manager to manage – unfortunately no response and worse no response after half time

Looking at the bigger picture, I now see this great football club as about the level of Brighton or Brentford on the playing side. Six or seven first choices of limited ability (including the captain), good enough to win the league, but found wanting at a very average European level.
Malmo average gate 14k, £2m player budget (I read), Maribor 5k, Zagreb 7k….
Something’s not right. £30m plus gone tamely out the window.
This was a bad bad result tonight and I expect the happy clappers to have a go back, but spare me it please. Watching Celtic since 63 and although there have been worse reverses, tonight was particularly hard to take because for me it showed the club up as being well behind the level we should be at.
Hello – was at Wee BGFC’s fitba tonight, so just finished watching the game. My, but that was crap!!!
Not read back, but main issue (of which there were many), was Charlie at left back. Too slow by a mile, in all aspects of the game. Caught out in lead up to both goals – all the Lizzy detractors may have cause to re-think – I’m sure Ronny will too. Oh – one other thing – Boyata: I’d have Efe every day of the week and twice on a Saturday.
I’m sure others have their own thoughts, but moving forward, VVD will be off, so we may have some hair-raising defensive problems over the next few months. This is the main area Ronny needs to work on – defense is an accident waiting to happen if we play at a level above SPFL. We need to continue with team building now – not next year. Need at back four that is solid an know each other’s game. Forget everything else – get the defence sorted.

Disappointed in our players tonight. There is a lack of urgency and focus running right through the team. VVD – will not make the big time – carpet slippers and cigar – too often. With the new £xxxm Messiah at the heart of the defence we conceded 2 under 14 corner kicks. Yes we had a bad decision but just as the I Daley game we couldn’t come back from it- the 2nd have we should have been fired with revenge but we just wilted like unwatered daffodils.
2nd half was up there with the most downhearted displays I have witnessed.
What dies John Collins do?
A grim reality has set in tonight.
We are not even a second tier European club.
Our status is now third rate at best.
Our coach unfortunately is not ready for a big team yet.
We were so naive in both legs.Tactically bereft and outplayed by a very average team whom we probably have better players than.
Playing in the SPL is like death by a thousand cuts.
Our custodians have no real ambition or plan other than being a profitable business model.
If only every now and then they had ambition for the team?
We enter every season knowingly lacking in certain areas of the team and hope for a lucky draw or the frailties do not cost us.
A board with ambition would not have allowed this for their entire tenure if they had ambition for the playing side.
Ronnie has some decent ideas but lacks the ability to implement them.
He was a bold choice and would love to think it was innovative but the reality is it’s more down to the boards parsimony then anything else.
Looks like DD was hoping for same effect as his London city airport(buy cheap and sell for large profit.
But with no European league in sight he’s going to have a long wait.
We are a big club only by our support on every other level we are European minnows.
I think Hearts and Aberdeen really think they’ve got a chance to win the title this season. That’s the same Aberdeen that lost to the mighty Kairat Almaty. They’ll be more confident again when we sell the hugely overrated (and hopefully overpriced) VVD. Whether or not we agree with them, they smell vulnerability. If a team as modest as Malmo can pump us, why not them? That’s what they’ll be thinking.

I trust Rd to win the league but I do not trust some of those players to have the guts when it really counts.
And some of those are seasoned Scottish Internationals…

Sorry missed your reply.
Basle in the Europa, with half our turnover, – don’t fancy getting them again, and you’re right they sign experienced players, like the ones you mention.
But in the main it’s the SPL and salary cap that thwarts us.
Away from home, have only just caught up with score. Massively disappointing. No excuses. Over the piece, we lost to (IMO) a lesser team. There will be lots of external detractors over the next few days n weeks.
We need inward looking honesty. This is not good. We cannot ignore or excuse this away.
Anyway, internet about to give out on me.
Find solutions, not scapegoats
Here is a bit of a surprising fact-
The top 5 ranked teams who entered the CL 3rd qualifying round have all been eliminated.
In order of co-efficient ranking they are:-
1. Basel (84.875)
2. Salzburg (43.135)
3. Viktoria Plzen (41.825)
4. Steaua Bucharest (40.259)
5. Celtic (39.080)
Basel are normally permanent fixtures in the group stages so maybe they just had a bad night at the office. But the rest of these teams are what I would call “yo-yo” clubs – they might be in the group stages one season, but probably not the next (Celtic included).
Malmo of course accounted for two of the seeds (Salzburg and Celtic) yet I think I`d be right in saying most of us would expect them to get pumped senseless in the group stages this year.
So I think what this shows is that the gap between the middling countries (Switzerland, Scotland, Romania etc.) champions and the CL heavyweights is getting bigger; but the gap between the middling countries champions and the minnow countries (Sweden, Azerbaijan, Albania etc.) champions is getting smaller to the extent that it almost doesn’t exist.
Being seeded is no guarantee of anything at CL qualifying stage, especially when you pee money up against a wall on Dundee Utd cast-offs who would be available for free on a pre-contract in 6 months time (Ciftci) or on guys whove played about 25 games in their career; a game for each year of their life (Boyata).
I think we`re now at the stage where Celtic might be a CL group stage team one year in four, depending on a fair wind. We`re getting worse, and above us the heavyweights are getting more powerful, and below us (but probably not for long) the champions of Sweden, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan etc are getting better. Effectively the CL now comes in 3 levels – the big shots from the big nations, then the mediocrity which is ourselves, Malmo, Qarabag, Dinamo Zagreb etc, then you have the league of Wales, Ireland, Iceland etc teams who all get papped out in Qualifying Round 2.
In years to come we will be doing well to get 3 points should we ever qualify for the CL Group stages.

Can you explain to me what credentials Ronny had to merit the Celtic job? Can you further explain what he has done as a Celtic Manager to merit your defence? Chris Sutton would do an equally good job. Do you honestly enjoy seeing a Celtic Manager celebrating beating bottom of the league teams? He has been given every opportunity this close season to prepare the team for these matches. He has not good enough and we had the sight of a Kilmarnock side losing 4-0 at home to Ross County last Saturday, a team we drew with.
Is our team worth the money we pay to them? Is that not the question that needs answered?

Ajax got pumped out in R2. As I said elsewhere I think outside the ‘big leagues’ it’s anybody’s game and the summer league teams have an advantage.
Lawwell has taken £2m in last two years and over same period thrown £30m away.
Net spend on players £200k. Something wrong ….

In terms of a defence, I get your point. But at which part of a match do you start questioning players?
In my view tonight had little to do with tactics or team selection but more to do with psychology and performance of players. Your view is clearly different and I respect that.
And to compound it, many of our games which would have been on Saturdays will now be moved to Sundays.

No question.There is no single factor involved in this disaster,and it is a disaster.
Ronny must carry the can,however.
The players played to his tactics and his motivational skills.
Did you see any urgency tonight?
Would Alex Ferguson have watched the painfully slow build up?

Lawwell downsized the team over the years significantly and hired a rookie from Norway.
Lawwell has wasted millions on striker projects Rasmussen, Scepovic, Balde , Pukki etc
Lawwell selected John Park and set up the Lennoxtown/St NInians Academy while we buy Dundee Utd development players or Hamiltion etc
In business when it goes wrong you start with the CEO who has cost Celtic £50M. Not for me picking on the players. Ronny was found out tonight ; in his defence the players are just not good enough. Usually Celtic teams make up for lack of ability with fight. Tonight there was acceptance of defeat and some players became frustrated.
Lawwell will probably spend a million of the VIrgil fee on another dud striker ….whilst smiling all the way to the bank as he secures his bonus again. I think Lawwell is going for 10 in a row with the £1m/ package.
I remember that Lawwell bonus was to be linked to CL qualification. the bonus thief will take his £500k ……while dishing out platitudes for the happy clappers.
Europa League is a complete waste of time resulting in Sunday games.
Celtic still have the biscuit tin mentality under Lawwell.
