Maribor, St Johnstone and resolving Murrayfield

565

Did you watch the European Super Cup from Cardiff last night?  Europa League champions Sevilla lost out to Real Madrid but the team from Andalucía got there after beating Maribor 4-3 on aggregate.  The Slovenian’s narrow defeat deserves some context: Sevilla also eliminated Real Betis, Porto, Valencia and Benfica.

Make no mistake, we’re up against a decent European team.  More on them later in the week.

Tonight it’s St Johnstone, who, like Celtic, have sharpened their wits with European football in recent weeks, and well as enjoying an opening day win in Dingwall at the weekend.  They have lost their talisman, Stevie May, which is a pity, as I would like to see the Celtic defence stretched as much as possible this week, but they will be as ready as any domestic opponent we could face at the moment.

Ronny Deila has two short games to sort out game plan, shape, partnerships and team spirit, before travelling to Slovenia.  It doesn’t need to be right for tonight, but signs of considerable progress on the Murrayfield debacle is needed.

The Kano Foundation are one of the greatest initiatives from any group of football fans I’ve heard about.  They bring the Celtic experience to childrens’ charities and groups, truly phenomenal work.  The Foundation was founded in the wake of the Bring Martin Home campaign, which brought our very own Kano home from life in a hospital bed.

You’ll see the volunteers outside Celtic Park before kick-off on Saturday with buckets, so make sure you bring something for them.

Want to show Ronny Deila how it should be done? Think your better than Stein? Do you have the luck of Celtic or the administration talents of Legia? Then here is the invite code to the CQN Championship Fantasy Football League, we are now approaching 130 teams entered.

    296638-123206

You only have 3 days left to register your team & join the league.

    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/

As an added incentive I’ve decided to offer some prizes for the top 3 come the end of the season. The winners will each receive items of their choosing from the Official Celtic Webstore to the tune of

    1st £100

    2nd £75

    3rd £50

Or alternatively, winners can choose to donate any winnings to a Celtic charity of their choice.

Also if by some miracle I end up in the top 3, the winnings will be passed onto the next placed team.

Sooner or later the football authorities in Europe will have to address the super rich clubs in Europe it might be they should have there own Tournement and the lesser clubs in terms of finance should have there own. There are probably at guess only maybe 10 or so clubs who can win the CL the remainder are only making up the numbers and when there fans get bored and start to stay away something will have to be done.I also think it can only be a matter of time before some clubs start to go bust trying to keep up with transfer fees and wages becoming silly currently they exist in a bubble but that bubble can burst. The Kano Foundation Bucket Collection 2014

Folks as you may remember , we set out an ambition/hope to try to minimise the amount we imposed on the fans while maximising the return . For that reason , we try to only reach out with the begging bowl a couple of times a year – well next Sunday is one of those times .

For the 2nd year in a row , we’ve obtained the collecting licence for the environs around Celtic Park for the flag raising day . As a result , we need to ask for help for volunteers to help with the collection on Saturday 16/8.

Because of the early kick-off, we need to ask for volunteers/helpers from 10:00 am .. If you can help ,either with the collection or with the counting afterwards [after the game obv ], please drop a line to bucketcollection@thekanofoundation.com including your name , address , dob and whether you can do before the game or help with the count afterwards.

As an added incentive , you’ll get a kano t-shirt and free entry into the Kano Karaoke we are holding in Arena from 7pm after the game.

Anyone else is welcome to attend (5gbp entry fee).

For anyone attending the game , please bring along your loose change – we averaged 10p per fan last year – a repeat of that would be great .

    Hail Hail

Doubt he would come directly but what about Winter or next summer when he is home sick.

If he plays for Brighton would 3 teams in a season rule out Winter ?

We have produced Forrest, Henderson, McGregor, Fisher and Marcus Fraser who have all done well. We need to slot them into the team more thoughtfully in order to help them develop.

Take last season for instance. We had the League won about seven games before the end of the season. This was an ideal, God given opportunity to play 5 or 6 youngsters for 45 minutes to an hour of each of the remaining games but what did Neil Lennon do? He chose to chase meaningless records in terms of points and goals. The League was already won. That decision of his as well as his team choice against Aberdeen in the cup game and his failure to shut up shop in Milan when it was 0-0 with 10 minutes to go exposed his limitations. There are opportunities for us to ensure that our young players are ready but we must choose the games wisely.

  10. Malone Bhoy

i agree that Celtic should have a team in the lower scottish divisions, that would help our youngsters get more game time experience vs journeyman professionals

I think some out of the box thinking is needed to aid our progress

This is one of the steps

perhaps a standing area would be another

Right now we may be the best under 19s in the country, but the step from playing against other under 19s and then into the first team (perhaps even in a Euro tie) is too much

Frankly if a team of under 19s cant win/ or compete well, in the 3rd or 4th tier in scotland then they probably dont have a future at Celtic. I know sevco are bumming about winning these titles, but we all know the standard they won against was part time and youth teams, almost junior level. If our under 19s are the best in the country then we should be able to put on a show. (no promotion however, so that the current smaller sides are not handicapped either)

When Clydebank went out of existence, I suggested that they should have been the team we took over, near to Glasgow and full of jungle jims too.

More recently we should have bought the assets of the deid co and gave our youth team a chance, (changed the deidco strips to green, white and gold of course!)

  11. mullet and co 2 on

The EPL is only one league. I haven’t looked at the stats but I would imagine its the highest spending on transfer fees in Europe. Maybe has been for a few years. Even though the EPL sides buy talent in abundance it doesn’t guarantee them European success. How many times has an EPL side win the European Cup in the last 10 years and out of those 10 has there been any comparison with the highest spending league?

I don’t think we should take any cognisance of the EPL at all other than to take our players away at inflated cost.

We should be comparing ourselves with other nations such as Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Greece.

What are their wages to turnover ratios, what are their wage caps and how successful are their teams?

We will soon be saying how come Maribor can beat us with less resources. It won’t be because the EPL pay more.

Maybe there’s a correlation between poor returns on investment in British football though. Why would that be?

  12. Jeg er Delia Smith on

For the record, what Ronny said about Denayer is this:

“He is going to be worth a lot of money,” said Deila. “He is worth a lot of money now. Is he a player worth £6m or £7m right now? I’d say he’s worth more, £10m”

It’s a bold statement – it says Man C really rate this guy as a prospect, and we agree. Good! I am glad we have brought in a guy who is so highly rated. He’s out of our price range but he is here to improve our squad for the season Also good!

i tend to agree with you about the superteams (financially anyway)

I do have a fear that these superteams, basically the usual CL last 8 teams may have a breakaway league and get an even better TV deal for them selves while the likes of us and others like us will be left trailing in their wake in some sort of second class structure, as the rich become richer.

The debts that the likes of Real Madrid carry will soon demand that they break away from their current structure and play against the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Man Utd etc on a weekly basis. I have concerns about where we will be when this day comes

Shane Long is worth £12m if McCormick is worth £11m. A coke is worth £1.50 in London City centre but not in Paisley.

Cheaper alternatives to coke are available as Celtic know well. It’s just that Celtic like to try out a wide variety of outlets and brands… Even brands that have holes in the can or no one else wants or or really young brands that haven’t matured yet.

I made the same point yesterday. The absurdity of the EPL means a £10m player will need game time. It would not surprise me to see some of these guys with us for a couple of seasons as their own first team pack in 20/30m replacements.

We’ve gotta be cute and this will be the norm. Looking forward to seeing him. Watched the video and he looked super and an athlete too. Just what the slackers in our squad need to see.

Tamrabam. For me I would love to see us in a European set up where all the clubs entering would half some chance of winning it. I dont mind if we dont play the super rich clubs but perhaps it could be a league structure so you could be promoted to the top super league and there could be relegation as well. The current CL our qualifying is really about money and not football.I dont like watching us being uncompetitive but as we leave the ground saying ah well remember we have earned 20 Million.

  24. mullet and co 2 on

If Denayer is worth over 5 in our managers eyes he will start. I’m glad of that. Might be Efe off though.

    Narrow defeat tonight.

I’m starting to be a bit more hopeful in a Hail Mary sort of way that this debacle will work itself out.
