Martin O’Neill’s words on Keane

320

Martin O’Neill trained as a lawyer before going into to football and then football management.  That legal training tells in some very precise word choices.  So on Sunday, when he was asked on Sky TV whether Roy Keane would be a suitable Celtic manager, his response was sure to lead to speculation.

Martin (of course) dodged the question.  Instead, he endorsing his former assistant’s ability as a manager, indicating his surprise so many clubs were missing out on Keane.

After a mercurial two years manager of Sunderland (summer, then winter) and two years with Ipswich in the lower reaches of the Championship, Keane has not been a manager in his own right for 10 years and 2 months.

Half of this time Roy was Martin’s assistant at Ireland.  For six months during that period, he was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, before a short spell, again with Martin, as assistant at Nottingham Forest.

We have been here before with media reports of Roy taking the Celtic job, before Ronny Deila’s appointment seven years ago.  Celtic were still shopping around then, as they are now, so it would be folly to make assumptions.

Anyway, back to Martin’s legal brain.  With all them smarts, our former manager surely knows it is Roy Keane’s intensity that has led to a reluctance of chief executives to give him the keys of the kingdom.  There are surely easier gigs than managing Roy Keane, although Martin achieved this part-time for five years.

Intensity: euphemism.

  1. If Keane is appointed then there’s no doubt about who runs Celtic or who decided to keep Lennon on.

Desmond is a rich man but clearly knows nothing about football.

We’ve every reason to be fearful today about our Club’s future.

We’re in the hands of an amateur.

  2. No matter who gets the job, it will allcome to grief over money to acquire better players.

SFTB- I don’t think you would have to scratch too deep, for the Keane Mark 1,to appear, not for me,he has nothing on his CV to justify considering.

Embarrassed by flag worshipping of any kind

And using the K in Klan against Paul 67 speaks volumes about the zealotry we are going to have to face proving to the McGlashans that we are good enought to be considered as Scots in the new formed nation of Big Rock Candy Mountain Land.

P.S. Well done to the Scottish Government in their NHS pay award!

  5. Dissapointed that Broony is leaving.

Thanks for your great service to our club.

Really disappointed Broonie is leaving, a lot of new staff and players coming in,his experience would have helped them settle in, and let them know what’s required at Celtic.

Leopards rarely change their spots. We were told a year or so ago when Mourinho got the Tottenham job that he’s “mellowed” and that he’s “happier”.

Fast forward 18 months and we see the same old grumpy man, refusing to acknowledge his flaws, throwing players under the bus while his team struggles on the field.

If Keane really has changed and mellowed, let another club run that experiment – not ours.

  8. SFTB………….

He’ in a coaching job currently tho’.

I doubt Aberdeen expect or plan to finish above us or the huns……….

they just need to compete or be better than the rest of the agricultural section.

    Getting Broonie in will help.

  9. Totally gutted. Just when I thought the season couldn’t get any worse, Broony is leaving. I think this is a big mistake.

  10. Roy Keane odds shorten as the bookies start to make him the out and out favourite to be the next Celtic FC manager, It looks like it could be an announcement tomorrow.

An enormous rebuilding job that will take drive skill personality knowledge patience energy experience, Roy Keane is not the man that has that skill base. I hope I am very wrong here but I foresee this unravelling and protests surrounding the PLC on the Celtic Way before the year ends

Gerrard is no longer a rookie, and should not be underestimated for a second, a winner, with a fine footballing brain, the last 16 in Europa League is not to be sneered at 2 years in a row, he will strengthen that squad for next season the money will be found, Roy Keane may be left with no other option of having to win every league game from the start of his managerial reign,

We certainly live in interesting times the old firm rivalry is back

You’re spot-on but you know what, I’d take Glass/Brown over Roy Keane any day.

  12. Cannot understand the Scott Brown decision.

Surely we could have offered him similar terms,or as in the Craig Gordon saga we again outsmarted ourselves.

This is the culmination of the biggest display of mis management, and no succession planning , I have seen in a lifetime watching Celtic, effectively dismantlling a 9 in a row team over the course of one Season.

There again, how can our Captain, suddenly exhibit more loyalty to a pal, with limited experience, than the Club with whom he experienced unprecedented success.

That does not appear like loyalty.

  13. Greenwells Glory on

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve ;- Best of luck to Broony, although not always my favourite, he showed me I was wrong when he absolutely blossomed under Brendan Rodgers. I really hope he develops into a top grade coach and returns to us in the future.

    Off to tie some flies.

Although I don`t agree that our poor season was all down to Neil Lennon, I did find that funny :-)))

  16. I think Scott has had an eye on the door for past two years as by all accounts he was close to going to Australia. No question of loyalty either way as far as I am concerned. He owes us nothing and his best years are behind him. Frees up a big wage and if he rises to the challenge of coaching we know where to find him. On the other hand, if he is not suited to it (like Larsson), Better he tries and fails elsewhere rather than being hounded out of CP like NL.

  17. Scott Brown has been a superb player for Celtic but I feel he will now become even superber :-)))

  18. I rate Callum McGregor very highly but, from my view from my seat, I have never really seen him as Celtic`s Captain. Now that Broony has gone, will Calmac be given the role?

    If not, who?

  19. Aberdeen take Scott Brown off us. A good move for both parties.

Look how quickly Aberdeen have acted.

We are always dithering in signing players and managers.?

I suppose that’s what happens when everyone now showers at home. 🙃

When do we start the massive rebuild?

The Huns have done well against Europa league opposition. There’s a big gulf in quality between the two competitions. They might do better than us in qualification but the test to your theory about our place in European football only comes when we see if they are truly a “cl team” or are, like we have been, only there to make up the numbers

    ———

    Totally agree

Though one caveat is that we’re now consistently failing to get through the CL qualifiers…..largely against teams of similar quality to those the FOD have been beating regularly in the Europa League.

  22. Scott Brown said it has been an honour to wear the Hoops and thanked the club and fans for all their support over the years.

‘It was a privilege to sign for this great club all those years ago and it has been an absolute honour to play for and Captain Celtic for so many years.’

“I would like to sincerely thank Peter, Dermot and the Celtic Board for their tremendous support over so many years. We have always enjoyed a great relationship and always worked closely together to bring our fans as much success as possible.

“I would also like to thank the great Celtic managers I have had the good fortune to work with and also so many team-mates and, of course, the Celtic fans who have given me such phenomenal support and backing over the years.

“I have always given my best to the club and always wanted the best for our fans. We have enjoyed some fantastic moments and success together, dominating the game in Scotland so regularly and enjoying some great European nights.

“It is a huge decision to leave this magnificent club, which has been such a massive part of my life for so long, but this is a new opportunity for me and a new chapter. Celtic will never leave me and the club will forever be in my heart.

“We still have work to do this season and that will of course, as ever be my full focus as we try to bring our fans more success.”

Smaller clubs than us act swiftly and decisively.

    Why are Celtic so sluggish?

    ###

    Two reasons.

1 The club’s owner isn’t a fan and has no background in football. He bought the club primarily as a business punt, which hasn’t paid off.

    2. The fans are ‘faithful through and through’ (to what, and to what end doesn’t seem to be a consideration),, and enough will always renew their season books no matter how badly the club is run.

  24. Good luck to Scott Brown , who by and large has been a great player for us and lead when others didn’t. Took a lot of abuse both on and off the pitch but seemed to enjoy it nonetheless. Doubt we’ll see anther player be as successful as him in the years to come (James Forest and Callum McGregor excepted).

    Good luck in Aberdeen!

  25. Hot Smoked

    Glad you smiled my friend.

    Captain?

Ajer for me……IF….. he’s still there.

I rate CalMac on many things – but not as an influential leader or penalty box defender.

But, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that neither CalMac nor Ajer will be here next season.

    Hope you’re well Sir

  26. PS Jim …. I also don’t honk that NFL was solely responsible for our difficult season. External factors and a system-wide failure.

But I do think a good manager would still have won the Ten. And better in Europe…..
