Martin O’Neill’s words on Keane

320

Martin O’Neill trained as a lawyer before going into to football and then football management.  That legal training tells in some very precise word choices.  So on Sunday, when he was asked on Sky TV whether Roy Keane would be a suitable Celtic manager, his response was sure to lead to speculation.

Martin (of course) dodged the question.  Instead, he endorsing his former assistant’s ability as a manager, indicating his surprise so many clubs were missing out on Keane.

After a mercurial two years manager of Sunderland (summer, then winter) and two years with Ipswich in the lower reaches of the Championship, Keane has not been a manager in his own right for 10 years and 2 months.

Half of this time Roy was Martin’s assistant at Ireland.  For six months during that period, he was also assistant to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, before a short spell, again with Martin, as assistant at Nottingham Forest.

We have been here before with media reports of Roy taking the Celtic job, before Ronny Deila’s appointment seven years ago.  Celtic were still shopping around then, as they are now, so it would be folly to make assumptions.

Anyway, back to Martin’s legal brain.  With all them smarts, our former manager surely knows it is Roy Keane’s intensity that has led to a reluctance of chief executives to give him the keys of the kingdom.  There are surely easier gigs than managing Roy Keane, although Martin achieved this part-time for five years.

Intensity: euphemism.

  1. Take that. Good character tonight

Watched the Ireland game last night as well. Gave Serbia way too much space. The usual tight Ireland would have got a point. Lots to like with the new guys. The keeper Travers played where i live in Leixlip and so did Collins, went to school locally too. Another young fella from my daughter’s school is playing at Norwich now. I could be a scout for Celtic ;-)

My dad came from Ashford, Wicklow. After my grandad died of TB the family left the farm to find work in the six counties. He was young enough to lose most of that soft accent for a strong Ulster one. No danger of hiding his ‘Irishness’

However my gran never lost her’s, I still have a tape of her talking, you know she’s from Wicklow😂

  3. Decent result for Scotland against a team that will take points off others in the group. Next stop Israel, who we always seem to be playing. Not much between us results wise, but we really need to get something over there before playing the Faroes next week. Hendry played quite well, as did team overall. Not a bad start as things go.

  4. Interesting reading all the comments and opinions on Roy Keane. Having had an in law who played under Roy during his successful and unsuccessful spell at Sunderland im rewarding marks of 10 out 10 and a gold star for the following poster. This is bang on the button and would have been proud of this post myself, take a bow you’ve assessed the man spot on.

    Speculation is dangerous

    My view on Roy Keane:

Sunderland he got the attention of the players because he was fresh off the field as a player (and what a player) but eventually he lost them. IMHO because his personality was single minded with no empathy for individuals. He became what he was as a player – a bully and people do not respond well to bully’s

He got the best out of Sunderland for a year then it crashed.

    —————-

Bravo, some of the stories I heard of Roy just doesn’t work in modern day management. Going around the dinner table and belittling players by shouting too many carbs, not enough protein just gets privileged millionaires backs up. His opinion was that Roy can’t comprehend the concept that everyone doesn’t have the same intensity or driven nature that he has and players express themselves differently as a person and a player. Until that penny drops Roy Keane will continue failing.

    Has he changed?

Well one player was seconds late for the bus was told too take the weekend off. Instead he followed the bus for miles the driver was ordered not to stop.

Recent comments after DeGea making blunders at Tottenham, Roy Keane wanted the player barred from the bus home and left in London. Hmm what happened to win and lose as a team, players terrified to make a mistake are more likely to make a mistake and totally undermines the team concept.

    File under mistake imo.

He did say however that some of Keanes touches in training when retired had the players in awe.

No doubt he was a genuine world class player, different skill set for manager though.

There is a great farmhouse cooking school in Ashford; Ballyknocken

I’ve been twice; run by celeb cook Catherine Fulvio. It’s originally her family home/farm and the house still has a ‘granny’ feel/decor

I did a corpy visit for the class but then did the overnight stay with dinner, breakfast and then full day class for my wife’s 40th. Brilliant food at the house and the class is Italian; making own pasta etc and then you sit down and eat it. Her books are pretty good too

If you are ever over for a Wicklow visit, I’d highly recommend it

Been over 20 years since my last visit to Ireland but I retire this year. Plenty of things I want to do after that and a visit down there is on the cards. Will look that place out nearer the time. Thanks for the info BTW👍👏

  8. Steve Clarke great coach …..plays Christie before mcgregor…….sorry…..but that would worry me more than Roy Keane!!!

  10. Good night fellow Celts – Celtic, the club of Ireland stuck in bigoted little Scotland = the home of Presbyterianism. If only Celtic had been born in England (Manchester? – MU did consider M Celtic) then the English protestants and their similarity to Catholicism would have been so much more welcoming. Much as I love the Scottishness of Celtic – how particularly anti-Catholic and anti- Irish Presbyterian Scotland is. Then we in the North get that in its worst form i.e. Free Presbyterianism – cring = our fleg.

  11. Vinnie – so a derogatory term for being Scottish took priority over religious name calling. If Maslow had created a hierarchy of bigotry!

  12. News reached me today of the passing of John Jo O’Connor.

The former owner of O’Conner Plant Hire, which I think was based around Rutherglen, or Brigton, or maybe even out Airdrie way.

The girl who worked for me told me many stories of this fella, her much loved uncle, originally from Kerry, and him coming to Glasgow, with a punt in his pocket, and went on to own that business and an open cast mine. and some family followed him, and he employed many irish in the city.

When she described him, I kind of was sure I had seen him outside Celtic Park, in the 70’s , our bus would park the other side of Nuneaton Street, the irish busses were already there 3 or 4, when celtic matchday crowds were 15,000. the ulster busses were already parked up

the fella met the other irish, and that swaggering priest, around the pools office.

i was fascinated by the chatter, the accent, i did not know any irish in my family at all, they were 60 years before.

but the dapper don, was an image.

we had to go to kinsealy on business , the girl said lets go see my uncle john jo,

    around from the pet shop,

lovely bungalow, where would you find the one legged man , he lost it in the boulder accident at the mine,

    up on the roof,

he was a lovely man, a great chat with him, memorable, god bless him

  13. Guys. Calum McGregor had a poor season like many others, I feel he has been one of the want aways and wants to move on for the riches in the EPL like Tierney, Armstrong. Let him go. They will never get their heart back for Celtic

Whataboutery should be contemporaneous, otherwise any insight it might provide is lost.

So, for instance, if someone mentions anti Irish Catholic bigotry in Scotland today, it’s a bit silly to respond by referring to examples of racism in England 60+ years ago.

  17. Roy Keane shouldn’t be near the Celtic management role.

He’s the type that could do a job for 6 months, a year at a push.

For him to even be considered is prrof that there’s an old Bhoys network, the old “get a celtic man/Irish guy in” by Desmond.

Fergal Harkin may well be good at his job if he’s the favourite but he looks more like the type of sporting director that is feared/rejected in the UK – basically a transfer guy.

On the continent a sporting director loos more at the ethos of the club, the sporting and psychological planning, basically being the hub and gel for all the leaders from coaching, medical, sports science and performance, analysis, scouting. Player purchases comes into it but it shouldn’t be the focus! To me it looks like that’s Harkin’s background.

  22. MALONE BHOY on 26TH MARCH 2021 12:39 AM

You might be right. Maybe Harkin will simply be a replacement for Hammond. A real DoF would have a massive say in who the new manager is and no DoF worth his salt would be recommending Roy Keane.

  23. Judging on ability and ability only. Look at the CV.

Is Roy Keane the best we can get ?

To reiterate: Apart from place of birth, what qualifies Roy Keane to manage Celtic ?

Of course, nothing has been decided yet as the dithering must run its full course.

  24. All the RK stuff looks like a media driven thing. The much maligned DD interview stated that the club would take its time, and was interviewing quite a few candidates. There has been nothing except rubbish from the Bookies,Football Insider, bigger rubbish, and others just piling on.

Is it impossible to just wait and see.So much angst and anger being shed on rumours. My God,have we learned nothing.

  25. DAVID66 on 26TH MARCH 2021 6:03 AM

True. Paul67 said the reason Lennon stayed in his position around New Year was that there was nobody available that the board felt could do a better job. Surely if DD was really interested in Keane, he could have come in while the season was salvageable. Not that I think Keane would’ve been the man to salvage the season by the way.

    GREENPINATA on 26TH MARCH 2021 7:27 AM

I’ve already seen Sevco fans on Twitter gloating and saying that “56” is in the bag. If they thought this season couldn’t get any better, us appointing Roy Keane would suggest they’ve seen nothing yet.

What I would say is this. Paul67 said repeatedly that there was nobody we fancied who was unemployed. He recently talked about people “scaring us with Roy Keane” and that if there was anyone being touted in the media, we can probably dismiss them as genuine contenders.

Now, this isn’t a dig at Paul67 but if we do end up appointing Keane, it would suggest he isn’t as “in the know” as people think. Let’s hope that he’s been right all along.

Having met personally through work a few of the EDL Brexiteer gammon flagshaggers that is certainly not my experience, Excerpt below is a high profile Tory minister a darling of the English nationalist set wanting the Irish to starve, fortunately for the free state the EU backed them to the hilt, we don’t need to imagine what lengths the British state would have plumed to in coercing Ireland if they had not been a member of the EU over Brexit if you know your history, indeed recent events of the British state having to be warned by America over raised tensions in NI due to the British lying in reference to and reneging on an international agreement, a hard-won peace agreement the GFA the old prejudices and behaviour in Ireland of the British empire have never gone away.
