McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

  1. Excathedra @ 1750,

Before i say anything i must state that I only saw the incident once (turned on Alba just in time to see a replay immediately before the 2nd half started) so really cant comment too much, but,

“I am still of the opinion the player was not in an ” obvious ” goalscoring position as the rules state.”

The Laws as you more or less say, state:

    “Sending-off offences

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the

    following seven offences:

….denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving

towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a

    penalty kick”

My own thoughts are that, if being a player who is running into the box with the ball in his possession in a central position and about to go 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper does not fit the law stated above, ie “obvious goalscoring opportunity”, i dont know what does.

I always try to put myself in the other position in these situations and for me the bottom line is that had it been the other way and it was Considine challenging Griffiths like that we would all have been shouting for a red card.

Again I cant comment with any authority on the Reynolds hand-ball, but from the 2 repalys i saw, it looked like his hand was held close in to his side and therefore it wouldve been very harsh to give a penalty for that.

However I am happy to be corrected and shown the error of my ways, if what i believe i saw was erroneous.

    HAIL! HAIL!

Celtic will have to be imaginative to ensure the crowd at the remaining home league games reach 20,000 our season has flat lined and one way to ensure that we get 20,000 at our home games is to start playing the youngsters our trip to Turkey was a success and yet we have not seen the youngsters being played in the first team. Due to the lack of grammar on these CQN pages, Paul67 has asked me , the best writer on the blog to provide you all with a quick snappy guide that you all have to adhere to from now on.

    How to write good.

    1. Avoid Alliteration, Always

    2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

    3. Avoid cliches like the plague. They are old hat.

    4. Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

    5. Be more or less specific.

    6. Writers should never generalise

    Seven. Be Consistent !

    8. Don´t be redundant; dont use more words than is necessary; its highly superfluous.

    9. Who needs rhetorical questions ?

    10. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

  7. Hamilton Tim,

I grew up in the 50s and early 60s. To me, they were even worse than the 90s. I DO think we are in much better shape than we used to be. I will be forever delighted if all we manage in a season is to win the League. Things now don’t even begin to compare to the truly dark days. For that, I think Ghod for Jock Stein and Fergus McCann.

Aye but you’re miles older than me :-)

I just think it’s futile to highlight the bad and referencing it to today when the good could just as easily be used when drawing comparisons.

Neil Lennon has done many things right but for people to proclaim his as ‘brilliant’ clearly have a different concept of the word from me.

Why not compare the present situation to the mid ’60s to mid ’70s for example

I was a regular in the 80’s that why I use that as an example. My point wasn’t to say we should all be happy clappers but some of the comments last night ( and any time we have a defeat or indeed a win)makes me think some fans are only content if we win every match 5-0.. and even then they would complain it was too easy..

Not wishing to prolong the debate but as you say ” ball in his possession”.

In my view he was outside the box when fouled and the ball was ahead of him,to the extent I thought FF would have reached it before Efe.

You may have noticed I never mentioned the hand ball as these things are open to interpretation, not always in our favour( if ever ) however what Thompson did early was a game changing decision,he could not give a penalty as outside, so he chose the more radical decision safe in the knowledge no fallout would occur.

If during the game he wanted to be super officious then VVD off and a penalty for us,however the part of that scenario benefitting us not applied.

My point is that I’m frustrated at folk saying how we have eutopia in comparison to what we once had ie the ’90s; but it’s relative, we don’t have what we had during our own 9iar.

I’m sorry but considering the current situation in Scottish football we should have won more this season than we will do.

I agree, I was stuck in traffic leaving Aberdeen last night and had a scroll back through some of the comments posted during the game; some were lamentable, Snake P especially.

However, some of the over the top comments recently comparing the current situation to 20 years ago are almost as bad.

We need to assess the here and now and if people are happy with the present then that’s fine but let’s not be selective in what we use in the past as a supportive argument.

  20. Shortbread TV sports news, who yeaterday gave the big build-up to the highland derby while more or less ignoreing the top of the table clash ,today decided our game was worth some coverage. During the course of the programme Hayes goal was shown 4-5 times plus the other goal but then they looked out 2 more goals scored against Celtic ealier this season. No goals from the leagues highest scores though.

Dont Celtic care about the clubs image . Why are they not doing something about this biased reporting by OUR national broadcaster?

Could not have put it better, especially the words about our performances in domestic up competitions.

I too was there through the dark days in the 80s and practically the 90s. We should given our resources win the League and indeed the domestic cup competitions.

There are few excuses for our poor performances in recent times in the domestic cups. Poor tactics, management and performances all to blame, indeed. The most recent example being that in the Scottish Cup, in my opinion that was down to poor tactics and management in my opinion.

You know what though, like you, I will continue to go along as I did in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and beyond.

Meant to add, given our resources we should also be winning more cup competitions, especially when we are beaten by weaker teams, regardless of what league they ply their trade. Yes, they are one off games and the opposition are more up for it because it is their best chance, arguably their only chance of winning a trophy.

At times we appear, I stress appear as I do not think, want to believe that we do not take cup competitions as seriously. Although at times I get that impression.
