McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

Pointless analyzing a game that was altered in eleven minutes but made myself watch the game again anyway, and reiterate I thought Celtic were excellent in complete control until the controversial but predictable sending off. Debatable at best, especially when you have Celtic fans saying red, and others not. The real interventions were the early yellows on Celtic players for first tackles.

A timely Thompson reminder of the black side of the SFA when he waited till 81 minutes to book Willo Flood

Whatever Celtic were down to ten men, and not a forward or a midfielder but the star of the show, the rock of the side, gone, and the game was wasted as a equal competitive spectacle, That said Celtic still nearly could have had a point, and come back from losing two goals before they had time to adjust to the loss of VVD.

What would the point have been of taking off a forward when you are two down at half time? – I don’t think we need damage limitation when we’re twenty points clear in the league. James Forrest was an inspired substitution and nearly retrieved it, as we completely outplayed Aberdeen with ten men in the second period.

Disagree with NL on the introduction of Samaras, who contributed precisely what we’ve seen before, too many times. NL may continue to play seniority before juniors, and it’s his right, his choice his call, to pick from what he sees at Lennoxtown and beyond.

Tough, times twenty one clear at the top, if Lenny hasn’t got it, neither has McKinnes whose new Aberdeen got humped by Partick. A lot of Neil’s recent contenders for the top job, are commentators and some others will be in the future.

The midfield was set out the way the critical supporters wanted and we’ll never know what would have happened had there been a level playing field, ironic it was a ‘winger’ ( *CQN pet hates* ) that nearly rescued a point, if he had a ‘midfielder’ colleague with the ability to finish.

    ————————————————————————————

Good post. I would only disagree on how we responded to the sending-off. Not because we needed the points but because it would have been good to complete the game without conceding. I believe we should have changed immediately (not at half-time) by bringing on Darnel (giving the youngster a run out) and kept either Leigh or Anto up front. Agree on Sammi – not sure why he’s getting a run unless Neil is trying to make him feel loved in the hope of convincing him to extend his contract.

Winning the league is now not enough for some well am old enough to remember the Huns 9 and thinking we’ll never win it again so I’ll take a league win ever year because that’s what it’s all about.

    Re The Karagandy throw-in warnings.

Knowing a team’s tactics and succesfully stopping them are two entirely different things.

We knew Barca’s fondness for pressing when they don’t have the ball and keeping possession when they do have it. In most games we got our tactics right to counter this. In one game, despite playing largely similar tactics, we came grossly unstuck.

Karagandy’s equivalents in the EPL, Stoke City, had several succesful seasons exploiting the long throw. Every manager, even the geniuses, knew it was coming. They still managed to use that limited tactic to good effect.

It seems to me that most people on here judge how successful a tactic has been by the result. If you lose, the deduction is that you got your tactics wrong.

How come then that a manager with NFL’s wining record is still classed as tactically naive/ out-thought/ a rookie non-learner?

I have my own thoughts on the answer and they are mostly to do with a pre-determination to make the facts fit no matter how hard you must squeeze them. That, and a relentless desire to pursue the big C Keevins/Durham method and cause wind-up and upset.

We are still guilty of very lazy journalism on here indeed.

    !!Bada Bing!!

I agree with you there. I think it is clear from the club that we don’t buy CL players we develop them. I would like us to sign an experienced player for the forward area. A playmaker or striker with trickery. Derk was clearly bought with this in mind but he looks like the type of player to come off the pitch cleaner than he went on. Pity that because he sounded the part and he talks the talk. Just not seen it yet.

  9. If someone had come up to me as I stood in the Jungle on a freezing wet Wednesday night watching a Celtic team struggling to beat the likes of Raith Rovers, Falkirk and Dundee, hoping a small run of victories would propel us towards a possible second place, watching them get knocked out of Europe by teams I couldn’t pronounce , never mind find on a map, that we would be complaining that the season was over because we were 21 points AHEAD in the league I would assumed they had partaken of too much of the special tobacco that was popular at the time..

    Tongueincheek csc

  12. On us

No amount of wishful thinking will make this a good season

We struggled to get to the CL group stages – that was in part due to our signings not being made in time to be bedded in

Once there we were very average

In several games we gave away good positions due to poor team selections, tactics and substitutions

Once we were eliminated from Europe there should have been a review of what was left for the season

The trip to Turkey was the perfect opportunity to do just that -well away from home

The target for the season should then have become crystal clear

The league was already in the bag -so the only other prize should have become a major priority – especially as the final is being held at our ground

That we failed in the cup -especially after the LC debacle against Morton – makes this for me a poor season

Our huge budget -in comparison to the other teams in Scotland-means that losing the league would be a sacking offence

The poor cup performances seem to me to reflect the fact that there is probably very little in the way of bonus money on offer -certainly compared to the CL

This has been the case since MON’s time

I hope that NFL now uses the rest of the season to try out players like Balde and Pukki

    – however I suspect that he will stick with his favourites until the league is mathematically certain.

Thus there will be little or no pressure on the teams selected after that – which will mean that performances will be harder to judge

    On the Zombies

Let’s hope this civil war that brewing is the real thing – let’s hope for a long drawn out affair that brightens up our spring, summer, autumn, winter, next spring, summer etc – until the whole stinking rotten edifice comes crumbling down

Preferably round about the time we get HMRC eventually winning the BTC about 2017!

Had similar discussion with guys at work earlier. It got to a stage about 6 in a row when I couldn’t see us win the league title ever again. I was distraught for years.

When we finally did it in 1998 I didn’t celebrate for a good 20 mins. It was sheer relief and then a cry and then the party started.

I guess like most football fans we are guilty of being greedy and impatient. Knee jerk reactions are inevitable. How many times have you walked out of a mediocre game in the last 5 years and heard.

‘That’s the worst game I have ever been to’

These guys were either not there in the 90’s or too drunk to remember. Sometimes people are quick to focus on the negatives. I tell my colleagues and when I had a team to manage to look at what was going well or what they were most happy with. You know use a different train of thought. The old negativity can turn to it’s actually not all that bad. Negative thoughts can lead to a genral slump. That’s usually why at times of bad results managers are often critcised for theirplayers either being pictured on nights out or doing something fun at training. They are trying to raise the squad and the mood. The fans can do the same. When you go to the game forget the board, the players you don’t like, how mince the last game was, etc, etc. It’s a fresh start get behind the team.

I think at times it spreads on CQN and other blogs and forums. It is entirely natural. hanging around or working with negative people will make you negative.

I took a Jambo to task on Facebook this morning who said Lennon was a half wit and I asked him to explain. He said the Celtic fans he knew agreed. 2 Celtic fans then did. I couldn’t believe it and set about tearing him a new one. I must have embarrassed him quite a bit because he pulled the post and all the comments.

Neil Lennon is our manager. We have had a good season not great but it’s a league win and I would have given my arm for that 20 years ago. Just for one league win too.

As my old man used to say. Never forget the bad times because they will make the good times better. These are good times!
