McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

    fan-a-tic,

Can’t argue with anything you say.

I agree that we are set up for a holding, cautious type of game.

After the Aberdeen cup tie, I questioned if Neil had a more expansive game in his locker.

I doubt it, as his own playing style, plus that of his mentors, MON and GS were similar.

What does give me a slight cause for hope is the strengths of the players brought in.

Each have an attacking style of play, so surely he must have plans to incorporate that into his team.

I hoped that allowing Joe to leave and the apparent departure of Sammi, signalled a change in approach.

ManU couldn’t cope with the energy and mobility of Olympiakos last night, and they weren’t ‘t an exceptional side.

Totally agree with you on Pep.

He has hampered their style, regarding fast counter attacking.

However, they are still a good side and with Ribery back, will be better.

    Back to us.

When Johanssen is fit, Mulgrew out. Stokes also and use Commons/ Forrest on the forward central role.

KC barely had 60 seconds in him last night. Lenny rightly hooked him at HT. The much maligned Anto busted a gut for the team last night. As for those who want to see big Amido given a run in the team – well as Mr Stein would have put it ‘ how bad must you be if you can’t get a game in this team?’

Possibly. Would be good if they were on display – perhaps something for the Celtic Museum when it eventually opens?

Greenslade hits the nail on the head again in his blog today …

Scottish mainstream media ignores Rangers tax tribunal

I imagine that a big tax case involving a top English Premier League football club would be widely reported in the English-based national newspapers.

But things, as I’ve pointed out many times, are different in the Scottish media. So the latest set of hearings into the tax affairs of Rangers, at a tribunal in Edinburgh, have been all but ignored by the newspapers.

On the first day of the upper tier tribunal, the only mainstream media coverage I could find was a report on the STV website.

Given that the tax matter, which involves £36m, was a contributory factor in the financial collapse of the club, you might have thought it worth covering.

The STV article was a comprehensive outline of the case made against Rangers by HM Revenue and Customs following a previous (lower tier) tribunal which ruled against HMRC and in favour of the club over its use of employee benefit trusts. That decision was said by HMRC to be “deeply flawed.”

The article also pointed out that – unlike the first tribunal – this one is being held in public and is therefore reportable. Of course, it won’t be reported if there aren’t any reporters at the hearing.

At least the Scottish Sun has lighted on one important factor. The tribunal judge is, wait for it, a Celtic fan or, in Sun-speak, “a CELTIC fan.” He is Lord Doherty whose “real name” (love that touch) is “Joseph Raymond Doherty.”

In its “exclusive” page one report, The Sun quotes a spokeswoman for the judiciary of Scotland as saying: “This was all raised well in advance with both parties and no objection was taken.”

The hearing continues. Will the lack of reporting continue too?

Someone posted Lord Doherty’s law credentials yesterday ,,,,,

Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford and Harvard … enough said!

Anyone on here who buys the Sun (or the Record) should be very, very ashamed and stop now !!

I wish the Lhad well but I just don’t see a footballer there. Hoping to be proved very wrong in the near future.

  20. Don’t get it. Berating the manager for losing away from home with 10 men against 12 for 80 minutes. And the reality is that we were the better team by far for most of the game.

Neil, don’t change what you’re doing. Thirteen clean sheets in a row seems pretty good to me. And it’s not like we haven’t been scoring goals too, 63 in 27 games. The next best is Dundee United with 46 from 26 games. 2nd place Aberdeen have scored 39.

Not sure where folk get their expectations from. Mine are simple. I expect to see Celtic play whenever I can. I expect we will win a lot of games. I expect to win leagues and occasional cups. I have no expectation on CL. I hope to qualify for league stages, but that is all. Hope. And delirious if we progress beyond league stages. Comfortable with dropping into Europa League. I am often critical of our manager for saying too much and giving the biassed Scottish media the chance to make mincemeat of his comments. However, he was right in what he said last night. The red card was given when the Aberdeen player did not have ‘a clear goal-scoring opportunity’ and the Aberdeen defender moved his arm towards the ball, giving away a penalty in the clear view of the referee. If he is the best in Scotland, it is not surprising that no Scottish referee has been selected for the European Championships.

As to the game, for a team that was down to 10 men for 77 minutes, I thought we were brilliant. We were the better team in the second half and deserved at least a draw. For me, Biton was the man of the match and our fans were great in the way they supported the team to the final whistle.

    We are an SPFL side.

A good one, but, at the moment, this is our level.

To progress, we need to inject more energy into the side.

We cannot afford to carry three and it was recently, four, players who lack genuine pace.

Stokes, Commons, Mulgrew and recently, Ledley, whilst being good enough players in their own right, slow our game down, to the extent that they are fairly easily put under pressure.

There is some cause for optimism with the arrivals of Griffiths, Balde, Pukki and Biton, plus Johannsen.

    ————————————————————————————————————

Agree with you on lack of pace of Stokes, Commons, Mulgrew and you are right it does effect us in Europe. I love KC in the hoops in domestic competition but in Europe he has been sadly lacking and TBH it’s his lack of pace and first touch the lets him down.

I think the team Lenny is building now may be one that doesn’t includ KC if reports of our interest in Snodgrass are to be believed, while not like for like players I don’t think they could play in the same team in Europe and surely that is all that matters when looking ahead and which personel you would require next season.

Saying that I think Celtic will sign him up on a 3yr contract, I think though the terms will be similar to Joe Ledley and will be reduced as that appears to be what Lawell is doing.

Overall I’m happy the way things are going, like others I have scratched my head at Lenny’s tactics at times. Last night’s first half after the sending off being a case in point.

Would I change things? Not a chance, we will qualify for the next couple of CL group stages and bank the money. When the New club do eventually get into SPFL premier division they will still be fecked financially for years to come. I honestly believe that unless they manage to recruit an unbelievably good young manager who can turn their fortunes around almost overnight then we won’t have a meaningful challenge from then in the next 10-15 years.

Aberdeen/Dunndee Utd may offer a challenge over part of the season but the 4 fixtures against each other actually hampers the smaller clubs over the course of a season so I realy don’t see us having any real challengers over the course of a season for a long time.

  25. Aw, aye … ?

Rangers: Dave King urges fans’ boycott of season tickets

Former director Dave King has urged Rangers’ fans to withhold season ticket money until they receive assurances about the League One club’s future.

The South Africa-based businessman is concerned about the implications of the club announcing last week that they are to borrow £1.5m from two shareholders.

King had his own offer to put fresh investment into the club rejected.

“My assessment is that the business is not commercially sustainable in the short term,” he said.

    More to follow.

  26. A couple of posters have mentioned St Mirren’s John McGinn. I think this guy looks like the real deal. Still slightly raw (only 19) but V. talented. He’ll move to a bigger club, probably down south, within the next 18 months. Time will tell whether he’s on a par with James McCarthy but I reckon he’s in with a shout.

  27. LiviBhoy - God bless wee Oscar on

    !!Bada Bing!!

Not seen enough of McGinn myself. Gauld and Armstrong look more exciting prospects than Brown and Thompson were at Hibs.

I like the centre back at United too. Souttar.

I like the boy Harris at Hibs. He hasn’t came back from injury the same player yet. Stanton looks another one to watch there.

Of the rest of the league I think the LB at Partick Thistle is worth a pre contract deal. Not sure there is anyone else. Long time admirer of McKay at ICT but that position is covered now with Griffiths coming in. A more cultured attacker with guile would be nice.

It’s not a bad old league this season but I’m not sure there are many other players who would make our first team squad except for some of the above and some others who may develop into first team squad players for Celtic.

The key element is when to buy them.
