McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

    Arsenal playing tonight?

  2. Blackadder witch trial day on CQN. Hysterical over-reactions a-go-go.

    Aberdeen got lucky last night.

Nothing to do with McIness prowess as a manager that his capable side with quality in certain departments – Robson, Hayes, Rooney – narrowly beat a team who played with 10 men for 80 minutes.

Celtic were excellent in the second half. Our European experience shone through as the ten men controlled the game.

    We’re a Euro-league quality squad.

We need a creative playmaker and a dynamic goalscorer to be a CL quality side. Our defensive capabilites are very decent when Effe played in front of a back four.

We are no worse than Olympiakos on our day, able to achieve last-16 at a push and rattle the major Euro clubs.

Our repeated mentions and involvement at that level are testament to the core values Neil Lennon has installed in his four years. We have a consistency about us now that means on percentage we rarely struggle for long periods.

It may not suit some to lose a single match. Petted lips are always to the fore when we’ve slipped up. I would remind those lip-bearers that Barca got pumped 3-1 at the weekend; Moral – you’ll never satisfy your petulant demands; man-up.

Any season Glasgow Celtic win the title is a GOOD season.

Disagree? Get back to the 80s/90s and weep with despair.

  3. Bom dia,

As some of you may know Carnival starts here Friday night, so I’m making the preparations to get the hell outta town tomorrow (being a Rio resident during, or visiting Rio for, Carnival are two entirely different experiences).

So maybe no nonsense outta me for a few days.

    Anyway, last nights games:-

    Cruzeiro 5 U.Chile 1

Cruzeiro breezed this one with striker Ricardo Goulart having one of those nights when everything went right for him, with a hat trick. Cruzeiro looked comfortable in this one and should go through, comfortably, from this group.

    Velez Sarsfield 2 A.Paranã 0

A tale of two strikers this match. Velez’s Lucas Pratto is like some sort of S.American Le Tissier in his final playing days and ran (albeit in short, breathin thru his erchie, bursts) Paranã ragged in the latter stages of this. Adriano was sub and had a major strop about having to come on with only ten minutes to go when they were already two down. On this form, Paranã will do well to get out of this group.

Odd wee point to note about Velez, is one of their shirts sponsors is “UM” Universitario de Moron. Wonder who else a group of Moron’s could sponsor?

    Gremio 3 A.Nacional 0

Well I got this one wrong. Gremio were worthy winners in this game, which was a good game to watch (despite all the cynical fouling). Gremio went with youth in their 4-1-4-1 line up and seem to have uncovered one for the future in the tireless running of gangly forward, Luan.

Nacional look like nobody’s mugs, but just couldn’t step up a gear, sweeper S.Medina in particular caught the eye.

Have to hand it to my missus for the best look-a-like of the night when she asked if Gremio forward, Barcos was “…that Latin bowling guy (think she meant John Turturro) from the Big Lebowski…” see what she means?

Arsenal de Sarandi 3 Dep. Anzoategui 0

At the risk of being slagged, I ventured onto “Arsemania” (www.arsemania.com.ar ) to find out how this had gone and can report that the Arsemanics seemed to be happy with the workmanlike way their team ground out a 3-0 victory last night.

And so to the rest of this week’s games…………..

    Today

    C.Porteño v Lanus

Porteño are an enigma, wrapped up in a riddle and were atrocious in this competition last season. Apparently they were unlucky in their opening game, 1-0 defeat away to Dep Cali and have gone 26 games undefeated in their national competition. Key player for Porteño is the man Bayern bought to fill Ballack’s role, and didn’t. Julio dos Santos.

A lot of people were surprised at current Copa SudAmericana holders, Lanus inability to overcome O’Higgins in their opening home match. How much of this was a reflection of the strength of O’Higgins remains to be seen. Lanus have a good blend of youth and experience in their side, with the defence marshalled by experienced defender, Paolo Goltz and will be difficult to break down.

    (a likely) DRAW

    U.Española v Botafogo

Espanõla weren’t that impressive in their opening game (they drew 2-2) in Ecaudor. However, that game was played in farcical conditions, so is no real measure of what they maybe capable of. However, playmaker Canales will be out after picking up a red card in the first game, that plus their other five players who are (allegedly) injured makes it look grim for the Chilean side.

Botafogo, seemed to have hung their hat squarely on getting success in the Libertadores and have a strength thru the team, despite losing Seedorf this year. Key players here will be keeper, Jefferson. 19yr old, centre back, Doria (I reckon this boy’s got it. So does Barca, who are supposed to be watching him as a potential replacement for Puyol) and the striking duo of Wallyson and Ferreyra .

    AWAY WIN.

    A.Mineiro v Santa Fe

Mineiro struggled in their opening match away to Zamora and were lucky to come away with a 1-0 win. However, they’re an experienced side with quality in most areas. Strikers Jô and Diego Tardelli, in particular will be anxious to reconfirm their claims for World Cup places.

Santa Fe are nobodys mug’s and their opening 3-1 win at home to Paraguay’s Nacional confirmed this. Key man is their captain No.10, Argentinian, Omar Perez. When he plays, they play.

    (a close) HOME WIN

    Flamengo v Emelec

Flamengo will be desperate to make amends for their opening defeat (2-1 away to Leon) in front of their home fans at the Maracanã. Also desperate will be striker Hernane “the Drill” who is off to China tomorrow in a deal worth 8m Euro.

Emelec notched up a home 2-1 win against Bolivar in their first match and are supposed to be without centre half, Narvaez and midfielder, Lastra in this one.

    HOME WIN

    Thursday

San Lorenzo v Independiente del Valle

The Pope’s eleven will be wanting to make up for their opening 2-0 defeat at Botafogo in this one and should be full strength which should be enough to see off Ecuadorian, newcomers Independiente.

    HOME WIN

    Newells Old Boys v Nacional

Smarting from a 1-0 away defeat to Atletico Nacional, the NOB’s will be wanting to make amends. So with their first win in 12 domestic game at the weekend, manager Berti (not Vogts) has to decide to remain with same line-up, or not. Especially so in defense where central defensive pairing of Lopez and Heinze had their first game together in along time

Urugyan’s Nacional huffed and puffed in their opening game which they lost at home to Gremio and will set their stall out to not get beat here.

    (a dull) DRAW

    Right that’s me aff……………..

  8. Summa of Sammi

“The Only Hatred l can see there is in Your Post..There has been a Billion words wrote on here Re; are they the Same team/Club Etc Etc..to Infinity and Beyond..

One thing about Kev J is he is Honest and says what HE Feels..”

You are right that I possess an element of hatred. I detest the attitude of just bring them back and let them behave as they do. It is what Maggie McGill calls the abused wife syndrome. It is not for me.

As for the “only” hatred on display, I’ll agree that, this time, KevJ did not overtly express hatred for the huns in that post but, unlike me, he does seem to relish tales of how we gave them a doing in the 1980 SC riot. All I saw was a game of chases.

As for Kev’s honesty, I find his story changes far too often for it to be mistaken for honest. Does he not attend because of the bored, the manager, the players, the cost, the lack of flair, or the lack of a seated area? Does he even not go at all? When he’s oot, is he really in? Do you believe him?

“In the 90′s did Celtic FC not have their ‘Card Shark’ equivalents.. we Definitely had the Hatred..”

Very true. The game and outlook has been changed now that some of our paranoia has been proven to be founded in reality. On top of their bigotry and apartheid signing policy, we can now demonstrate financial cheating and a refusal to accept and play by the rules. Did all that make no difference to your attitude?

“The Way l Look at it it is Not Just about the High and Mighty Celtic fans or Diehard Season Book fans..

The Whole world wants to see Celtic vs Rangers..98% of Players past and Present want to see Celtic vs Rangers..”

I accept that there is an appetite out there among the TV watching public and I have never said their interests should be ignored. The guys that played in the past were friends and still are friends with their former rivals as players. They too, will undoubtedly, for the most part, welcome the return of that rivalry. I wonder if the narrative is proven that they robbed titles and cups in the early years of the millenium, whether our players from that era would be quite so sanguine about being robbed?

I can accept the return of a rivalry with a Govan club too. I just want the fair administration of existing rules re financial fair play and that Rangers’ liquidation be treated in the same way as those of Third Lanark, Airdrieonians and Gretna; no partiality or favour. I can readily transfer my sense of rivalry to this new club if they ever appear in our division. They will have the same fans, by and large, after all.

    “The Bored..?

    Television Companies..????

And if You think the English want us before Rangers you have Never past Hadrians Wall..”

Thankfully, I have never ever suggested that England “wants” us alone though whether they would value a weakened Sevco just for their many fans, is a question I will be intrigued to see answered.

Anyway, I am sure they would much prefer it to be both clubs if they are going to do it all. Again, it’s a pity that can’t happen as one club died and it’s more than a point of unimportant principle to many of our fans that we hold to that truth.

“Getting Fleeced again..Oh..Like ALL The English teams that want us for Friendlies..”

Any Celtic fan that goes to an English friendly is voluntarily parting with their money to fund an English club or player. Their fleecing is volunteered just as those who buy Sky (who disproportionately filter money from small leagues to big) do. There may have been an excuse for it once in that we were backing our team and showing England how good we were, in ordeer to boost a move. I think the only excuse now for pre-season friendlies in England is to get TV coverage and let our exiled fans see the team. I have never seen Celtic in a friendly match in England. You make your own choices there.

“At the End of the Day..

Do You want to See Sugar Ray Leonard fight Marvin Haglar or Jim Watt..”

I think, in Celtic vs Card Shark Sevco, we might be seeing something closer to a mid-ranking middleweight fighting an out of touch former pro boxer, long past his best. I don’t think any of the 3 boxing names you list fit the bill as an analogy.

I just get, and like being happy about all things Celtic, in the 60 years I’ve been supporting Celtic, apart from the obvious good times, the last two years have been right up there with the best, I have lost a lot of friends and family on the way, and lots of them better Tims than me, my only sadness is that they never got to see it, other than that, I always a happy Tim and those people are the reason why.

    eddieinkirkmichael ,

    Yep,

Our game has been found out inEurope and requires modification, even for surviving thr qualifiers.

It is not a case of moving Neil on, it is questioning whether his football philosophy stretches to playing a modern game.

What we have now is a version of what other teams in the SPFL do do us, but due to our better players, we usually prevail.

Now and again, some teams thwart us, as we do, occasionally to the better Euro teams.

To regenerate the support, we need to improve the standard of football on offer, as it should be the football that creates the atmosphere for the fans and not the other way around.

As for the Lying King(copyright ackn.) I don’t believe that he is outside the tent p…….in, he is inside, along with the rest of them.

The plan was, dump the dept…done

Get the spivs and Ticketus their cash back……almost there.

Then Admin and this is the good bit….due to fan power,I.e., withholding ticket money and starting again, with Real R……. Men in control.

The Rebels will have won(irony bypass) and the World is back on it’s axle(sic).

All in the plan, hatched by DM /CO et al.

    Kojo

    ————————————————————-

It’s a fair point you make Kojo. A couple of weeks before there was an interview with some Scottish football person who works there and knew something of Karagandy. He pointed out that their game-plan was set-pieces and throw-ins – particularly long-throws. My assumption has been that our scouts would have picked up on this. However, perhaps they did bu tthe players didn;t take it on board? Who knows…

Pointless analyzing a game that was altered in eleven minutes but made myself watch the game again anyway, and reiterate I thought Celtic were excellent in complete control until the controversial but predictable sending off. Debatable at best, especially when you have Celtic fans saying red, and others not. The real interventions were the early yellows on Celtic players for first tackles.

A timely Thompson reminder of the black side of the SFA when he waited till 81 minutes to book Willo Flood

Whatever Celtic were down to ten men, and not a forward or a midfielder but the star of the show, the rock of the side, gone, and the game was wasted as a equal competitive spectacle, That said Celtic still nearly could have had a point, and come back from losing two goals before they had time to adjust to the loss of VVD.

What would the point have been of taking off a forward when you are two down at half time? – I don’t think we need damage limitation when we’re twenty points clear in the league. James Forrest was an inspired substitution and nearly retrieved it, as we completely outplayed Aberdeen with ten men in the second period.

Disagree with NL on the introduction of Samaras, who contributed precisely what we’ve seen before, too many times. NL may continue to play seniority before juniors, and it’s his right, his choice his call, to pick from what he sees at Lennoxtown and beyond.

Tough, times twenty one clear at the top, if Lenny hasn’t got it, neither has McKinnes whose new Aberdeen got humped by Partick. A lot of Neil’s recent contenders for the top job, are commentators and some others will be in the future.

The midfield was set out the way the critical supporters wanted and we’ll never know what would have happened had there been a level playing field, ironic it was a ‘winger’ ( *CQN pet hates* ) that nearly rescued a point, if he had a ‘midfielder’ colleague with the ability to finish.

  28. The big guy who said “THE BIG HOOSE MUST STAY OPEN” get him on the board as the fans representative……???

  29. Interesting to see the names of players some would like to see signed by Celtic My criteria would always be,would they help us in The Champions League, looking at the players mentioned on today’s blog,I would say no to all of them.
