McInnes proves point with second win over Celtic

789

The clean sheet record had to go eventually, so I’m pleased it went to a good goal, not an error by Fraser, which would have been harsh on the big keeper.  Having already recorded Celtic’s, then Scotland’s league clean sheet record, the British and European records were within touching distance, but that is now a matter for next season.

Months ago, when Virgil van Dijk first suggested we could go through the league season without defeat I said we were not nearly consistent enough to achieve this.  Ironically, last night’s defeat came after a sustained period of consistent an authoritative performances, in the league.

Aberdeen will have lots of reasons to wonder where there team might go now, having beaten Celtic twice in a month.  Amid all the newspaper talk in 2012 that Celtic needed their soon to be liquidated opponent, a few of us suggested that what Celtic really need is an opponent, and that Aberdeen, playing to a captive audience in a wealthy city, were the most likely candidates.

Manager, Derek McInnes, knows he does not have the resources to compete over a league programme, but he has proven a few points:  he knows how to beat Celtic and his team are the best of the rest.

If Aberdeen can cope with the vagaries of trips to Easter Road and Victoria Park next season, four games against Celtic will take care of themselves.  Let’s hope Newco Rangers don’t nip in and buy their best players with that non-emergency £1.5m loan.

The immediate challenge for Celtic is to get back into winning form on Saturday.  League Cup finalists, Inverness, will come to make up the numbers.

So the £2.5mill was never used & is no longer available

Did #SevCo diddle their accounts & somehow con Delotties ?

    SFO should have a look

  2. Does anyone have a progress update on our new striker Holm Fridjonsson? When he was signed NL was asked if he was on for the future but he replied that no he is one for the now.

He has been given no 19 and is listed in the first team pool but so far no sight of him anywhere near a first team start.

This could be the opportune time to start giving the youngstars more game time.

We do lack pace up front

  3. CQteN Dream Team.

We now have 184 teams logged and counted, only 16 to go until the magical 200 releases another wonderful prize!

    Keep the coming, details below.

“CQteN Dream Team” Less than 2 weeks to go until nominations close.

Now is your chance to select and influence the CQteN dream from the last decade,

    Email us on doccqten@gmail.com

    Rules are very simple:

Select 11 players from the list below, forming either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 formation

    So you will need:

    1 goalkeeper

    2 full backs

    2 centre backs

    3 or 4 midfielders

    2 or 3 forwards

    and of course….

    1 manager.

Each player on the list below has made at least 10 starting appearances from July 2004 to date during the CQteN decade.

So no Henrik, Lubo,or Mjalby then!

When you are selecting the players, you should ideally base your selection on their performances during the CQteN decade, but then again that is your choice.

Send your selection to us by email to doccqten@gmail.com with your CQN blog name (if you do not have one, then you need to get thinking as well)

Anybody can enter: bloggers, lurkers, friends and family, but you can only enter ONCE.

The closing date for entries is 3pm Sunday 9th March 2014

The CQteN dream team will be announced at the CQteN night on Friday 14th March and will be published online soon after. There will be a couple of prizes for the closest teams selected to the winning team.

Good luck and get selecting for a fantastic competition..

  4. It is almost 14 years since MON came to CP. We have, counting this season, won 9 titles. This ratio compares favourably with all eras in our history apart from Stein’s.

We are also re-establishing a decent playing record in Europe.

Could we have done better? Possibly.

From the late 70s, ie all my adult life, this is the best time to support Celtic.

Get the spivs and Ticketus their cash back……almost there.

Then Admin and this is the good bit….due to fan power,I.e., withholding ticket money and starting again, with Real R……. Men in control.

The Rebels will have won(irony bypass) and the World is back on it’s axle(sic).

I don’t think King lost any money. He invested in the club. And as we all know the club survived in good health. It was only the holding company which was liquidated. So his investment must still be intact, no?

Aye there were a few more days than just a ‘dreary new year’s eve’ marching down London Road after games back then. :-)

Good days are good days when you look back (sometimes tinted) – supporters always measure hopes and aspirations based on them. When a game or a season doesn’t pan-out quite as expected – it always provokes comparisons.

Everyone is entitled to offer an opinion as; a critic, a pundit or an armchair manager – nothing wrong with that provided it doesn’t get personal or vindictive.

Hey – it’s kept the Celtic Passion going during my lifetime!

    H!H!

  9. Not exactly John Brown on the steps of Ibrox asking where is the deeds but from a safe distance away in Suid Afrika Dave King is wanting the people to know the same thing.

Finding out who owns the deeds is gonna cost a lot and even then you wont get them :)

    From the shameless liar

“Season ticket money would be released to the club on a game-by-game basis, or handed over in one lump sum in return for the club’s major assets – Ibrox and Murray Park – being signed over to supporters”

  13. I was going to construct 1,000 word post explaining in forensic detail why they really, really are gone, but “Aye they ur” says it all:-)

    Liquidation is final.

The new Club that arose from the ashes, Phoenix like(I love the irony) is perilously close to follow following it’s dead predecessor, they just can’t afford to play at Ibrox, and any team playing elsewhere calling themselves Rangers, well will they be follow followed by anyone?

    From Palacio67 …

I hear the Judge, well named chap called Doherty(his side of the family can’t spell) was listening to the Lawyers for RFC2012 at the UTT when said Lawyer said,”Rangers were one of the biggest brands in world football”

To which the Judge replied,” that didn’t stop them from being liquidated did it”

Any paraphrasing, by me, for effect is entirely intentional and the accuracy of this account is questionable, but I like to thing it’s true:-)

    From the shameless liar

“Season ticket money would be released to the club on a game-by-game basis, or handed over in one lump sum in return for the club’s major assets – Ibrox and Murray Park – being signed over to supporters”

“Why do posters feel the need to compare our current form, success and overall performances to the bleak days of the ’90s?”

I think it’s because they feel there is insufficient gratitude for the massive turnaround we have achieved.

“Why not compare the present situation to the mid ’60s to mid ’70s for example?”

I think we have. Compared to that era, we have had to cope with:-

Not having a Golden Generation of players at all Scottish clubs.

Not having players tied to slave term indentured contracts.

    The Bosman ruling since 1995.

TV inflated club finances and its effect of creating rich leagues rather than rich clubs.

The change from a Champions Only European Cup to a multiple entry from the big leagues Champions League.

Wage and transfer fee inflation in those big leagues affecting our ability to retain wanted players and pricing previously available players beyond us.

How do we expect teams from outwith those advantaged areas to break through that glass ceiling with those handicaps in place? Is there any evidence that any have managed to do this?

Since 2000, a Scottish team has made the last 16 of the CL on 4 occasions (for comparison, Dutch teams have achieved this on 5 occasions, Greek teams 5 times, Russian teams 5 times, Turkish teams 4, Ukraine teams twice, and a Danish, Swiss, Czech., and Cypriot team on 1 occasion each only). Polish, Belgian, Hungarian and Austrian teams have yet to achieve it.

Damn right we are punching above our weight.

“For several years we’ve punched above our weight in Europe but continued downsizing and the selling of our best talent has resulted in us getting our arse handed to us on a plate this year. ”

If it was a direct equation between downsizing and drop-off in results, the graph would be more linear than it was. We spent big early in the millennium and managed the revolution of overturning Ranger’s dominance and a losing UEFA final.

We ‘downsized” and instead of deteriorating we actually improved to two last 16 places in 07 and 08. Even if you detect downsizing thereafter we still got back to the last 16 just last year. How did we manage that whilst being on an inexorable slide. We lost Henrik for nothing. We lost Sutton and Hartson and Agathe for nothing but we still improved in Europe, even as we were decrying the outfit that achieved this.

We did get good money for Petrov, McGeady, Wanyama and Hooper. Other football judges felt that we had players worth buying whereas they had not been interested in most of the journeymen we had before. Since Frank McAvennie, who else were sought after targets in Celtic squads?

“There appears to be a lack of desire for growth and clearly I don’t mean financial growth here because our plc could never be accused of that, heaven forbid!”

I’ll try to interpret this. After all, you use the word appear so you seem to be conscious of the possibility that this appearance is how it appears to you. The question has been continually asked:- How could and how should our club go for growth?

I have heard suggestions ranging from

    Build a reserve stadium

    to

    Buy some bigger named players

    to

    Pay bigger transfer fees.

Whatever the proposal, the question comes back. Spend what amount and to what end? If squads assembled at 4 or 5 times our cost cannot break this glass ceiling, why should a £5m forward get our moderate squad into the Promised land? Why would paying the better players 9how many?) in our squad, EPL level wages, get us into that level and how long can we afford to do so when we have SPL income?

“Celtic will win the league at a canter this year but with our resources we should be doing that.”

Very true. And yet our league performance is a lot better than last years but both were heavily criticised.

“In domestic cup competitions our performances and results have been dreadful on the whole. Poor tactics, management and individual displays have been the cause, that’s undeniable.”

Very true. Our cup record is very poor and we all hoped for better and had a right to expect better. We have underperformed in Cups.

“This is more of a rant than anything constructive I just got pissed off reading so many posters stating how if we think things are bad now then we should remember how bad things once were.

What about remembering how good they once were?!”

Great advice. When things are bad and we have lost a cup tie, we have many great memories which can restore our dense of wellbeing.

Some of them even came from periods where we were giving the team dog’s abuse and complaining they were not fit to wear the jersey.
