Michael, they have taken you away… from Ibrox

1425

If you aggregate the nods, winks and rumours around Celtic this week you might be inclined to think we’re in the market for a target-man striker with a few years’ experience under his belt.  I agree with the principle that we need a target man and I’m also of the view that short-term deals are not nearly as desirable as permanent contracts, but as we know, it’s too easy to load the club full of squad players who cumulatively cost a lot of money but scarcely trouble the first team.

Hooper, Stokes, Samaras, Bangura, Rasmussen and Murphy are all under contract for next season and we cannot be confident of attracting bids for any of those Neil Lennon might want to move on.  If we add a seventh striker, his name better be on the team sheet before Gary Hooper’s.  Signing an exotic version of Daryl Murphy would add spice to our week but would only consume scarce resources.  I’d rather not.

Co-opting a media partner works in theory.  It’s always better to have good relationships with the media than the kind of relationships Celtic perennially have, but what happens when your media partner plays with a straight bat?

Rangers media partner, STV, today report Nigerian trialist, Michael Uchebo, boarded a plane out of Glasgow a few hours after arriving (Michael, they have taken you away….) as the VVV-Venlo striker with 8 career goals to his name had “a poor first impression of” Rangers.

Michael, you clearly have a rubbish strike rate but you’re a remarkably perceptive individual.

Philbhoy -definitely; he knows they fitted him up over the incident with Fatty last year.

The O’jays were right [and I’m not talking about the ole Love Train].

  2. Sorry fella but he’s the same age as Ivan lendl was when he bagged his first slam.. if he’s got another 6 years at the top he’ll be doing well. Montgomery is about 94 and he’s still pro. Comparison is a bit iffy

  3. My cynical side tells me that Ally ‘That’s a FACT’ McCoist may be trying to bluff Pat Fenlon in to thinking Rangers best Penalty taker will not be playing tomorrow when in fact he will make a miraculous recovery to do just that.

Their duplicitousness knows no bounds. Devious, conniving, slimy, cheating, obfuscating bully boy wee arra peepul.

Or mebbes he really is just going to be in London/ Moscow/ the West Midlands on Monday morning for a medical.

Whateverthe truth of it, it shall have hilarious consequences. For us.

By the way they will beat Hibs tomorrow. Hibs are absolute garbage at the moment. Not a chance of them beating rangers or even getting a draw. So no getting your hopes up.

We’ll still be top of the league though and still holding our sides from the hilarity at the Auchenhowie Folly Trialist Express Lane

Iam afraid that Murray may become the Montgomery of the tennis world, good but not great.

I’d say its a lot more difficult to win a tennis major than a golf one. Since 2000 only 15 men have won a tennis major. 28 have won a golf major.

  8. Can’t believe the negativity re Andy Murray. He played like a star against a genuine star and both played extremely well in an epic match.

I felt he did Scotland and the rest of the UK proud.

like the Hoops, Andy, your day will come!

  9. Murray is just unlucky he is playing in an era with not 1 or even 2, but 3 great champions in Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

He played a great game today and certainly didn’t choke or bottle it.

I said as much earlier in the pub to a few of the lads-there is no shame in being a close fourth to two of the best players the world has ever seen, and someone who has suddenly became virtually invincible in the last eighteen months.

Though I honestly question, and have done for some time,Djorkavic’s rapid improvement.

  11. Or if you want to look at more recently, since 2004, there have been 6 tennis major winners and 20 winners of golfs majors.

Anyways, they said ole Griegy was presented with the trophy ‘in a side room deep in the bowels of the Nou Camp’ ; bowels being le mot juste, as said side room was in fact the lavvy.

    Fan and Patriot/Seven Fishes

Hello lads …. going to throw my two cents worth in re: Murray.

I have to agree with Fan …. Murray will never be a No. 1 – he has most of the physical tools (good ground strokes, serve, passable net game), but doesn’t have the self-belief to win …. he plays not to lose rather than plays to win …. at that level (I’ve never played at that level, but played at a pretty good level when I was young), and it wasn’t the guys with the best strokes that came out ahead in the end,… at that level, lots of guys have the talent, it is the mental game which separates the ‘talents’ from the ‘winners’…

As someone pointed out earlier, Murray plays great when there is no pressure … match is even, or when he is behind…. but, when he has the chance to close it out, he lacks the self-belief to do what is necessary to close it out…..

he is supremely talented at the baseline (you have to be to even stay in a baseline war with Nadal and Djokovic), but not good enough to beat them from there ….. Against Djokovic and nadal, however, he has to supplement his usual groundstoke game with a more aggressive net game …. he has to be prepared to go to net, get passed (against Nadal and Djokovic, that is 100% going to happen), but, keep doing it, particularly, when he gets his nose in front …. but, when it gets tight, he reverts back to his old standards .. If Lendle can get him to be more aggressive, then he has a chance, but, otherwise, he will be, as F&P said, Scottish Tennis’ version of Monty.

Was trying to think of a way to tie this into Celtic, but, cant really, so, for those of you who like CQN about C, sorry!

  16. Jellylegs won’t be playing in case he gets injured before the transfer window closes in case they get £2/3 million up front……simples!

As far as Rasmussen is concerned it is nothing to do with ability. It is the fact Celtic got a call saying the polis were on the way to training with an arrest warrant because he failed to attend court on a speeding charge.

He had been done for credit card fraud prior to signing for Celtic, he was given a chance and fecked it up.

I didn’t realise you had to be a world champion to get the respect you deserve on CQN!

Andy Murray is a world class tennis player and is easily young enough to make you all eat your words.

And why Colin Montgomery is getting pelters I do not know.

A wonderful, wonderful golfer in his day! Easily world class at this best, although never the best in the world.

He won tournaments playing against the best in his sport all over the world and to say he is a Ryder Cup Legend is a an understatement!

I do not understand why we need to “do down” fellow Scots who are, or have, flown the flag for the best wee bigotted country in the world.

Was Jimmy Johnstone the best right winger in the world?

Was Bobby Murdoch the best right half in the world?

Was Danny McGrain the best right back in the world?

Was Paul McStay the best midfielder in the world?

Probably not to most of them, but I love them all the same.

Andy and Monty – thank you very, very much.

    Keep up the good work!!
