Mikey, Moh and converting talent

414

I could not make sense of why we signed Mohamed Elyounoussi on loan from Southampton in the last days of the 2019 summer transfer window.  He played in Mikey Johnston’s position, a prospect I had great hopes for.  Just days later, Mikey was a star at Ibrox, winning possession (albeit without much difficulty) and setting up Odsonne Edouard for the opening goal.

Mohamed proved to be an important part of yet another treble in our second nine-in-a-row season, whereas the Celtic coaches saw gaps in Mikey’s play I had missed.

It has been five years since Mikey made his debut, so long, perhaps, that we have lost sight of the fact he is only 23 and missed much of the intervening period through injury.  Jota we more readily think of as young, although the Portuguese is three weeks older.

I’m not prepared to write Mikey off.  He has an ability to switch left-to-right and back better than anyone else in the squad at the moment (including Jota).  His battles with form and end product have been common among wingers for decades and are not fatal to a successful career.

With three years left on his contract, he needs regular football and encouragement.  Celtic have to learn how to convert this level of natural talent into a successful career, even if it means sending them out for a period.

It is wholly ironic that it is now the women singing “It’s coming home” as the menfolk usually forget to bring it home.

    ####

The lyrics of that song make no sense in relation to the women’s game.

That’s true for songs adopted by fans (YNWA, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles, Paper Roses etc) but not so much for songs specifically written as football songs like this one, which is all about the last 5 or 6 decades of being an England fan when the women’s game wasn’t on the radar.

The Celtic game should be finished in plenty of time to switch over to BBC to catch the post match exchanging of jerseys at Wembley for those not able to go to Celtic Park on Sunday. :)

Cod Nat history — low rent analysis / stupidity on a stick.

    No.1 was bad / honking.

    No.2 was bad / limited.

Dates and events linked together without any attempt to understand the detail / the subtlety / the facts that don’t suit are quickly forgotten.

Scotland as now exists is a point in time construct that does not fit with what went before — understand the language element and you will start to understand the complexity.

Strathclyde nationalism — the long walk back to freedom and regaining its historic links with Cumberland and Lancashire. All we need is an Australian to make a film.

Back to Culloden — one side had Scots / English / Irish.

The other side had Scots / English / Irish / Germans.

It must have went to penalties because the side with the Germans won.

Result — lowland Scotland put the boot into Highland Scotland using the useful idiot of the DofC — oh the irony / see above — to do their dirty work.

Calvinists using an Anglican to do down the followers of Rome — the SFA must have read a few history books

    ….

But in the Cod history of Nat Scotland that is not enough.

More suffering is needed and we move swiftly along to the emigration angle / the clearances angle / the potato famine angle — all bad / all the fault of the English.

Nothing about the clan leaders who marched their men to Culloden being the same families who then cleared their lands when sheep had more power / better financials than human muscle.

Why deal with the local when you can blame the far away.

The English have Brussels and Brexit — the Nats have Westminster and the English.

Casualty figures — which were higher?

Losses at Battle of Culloden vs drug deaths in Scotland 2021?

No matter the numbers too many will always blame the English.

Be very wary of a separation movement based on tax cuts.

Current Catalonian nationalism is based on a middle class desire to stop fiscal transfer to poorer parts of Spain — so nothing to do with progressive politics just middle class greed.

The Catalan face painters / true believers have always been a noisy small minority.

The current upswing is based on middle class greed / desire for tax cuts.

The Catalans are throwing their Valencian cousins under the bas.

So much for Aragonese solidarity — file under the self serving jumping of horses.

The Catalans have a history of that and it hurt them 300 years ago so maybe the lessons have been lost to the mists of time.

The fact it was written by two people of Jewish extraction and one of Irish Catholic extraction maybe has something to tell us (and the lumpen Neanderthals element of the English supporter) about the inclusivity of English society.

I can’t agree on the 3 Lions song being ‘the best’, can’t stand it.

Euro96 was great fun but I’d hoped that song would stay there.

    Multiple reasons:

hated Lightning Seeds, thought Fantasy Football league was mince and England only (despite being shown across the UK), Frank Skinner has never been funny

World In Motion by New Order was a great song in 1990 – even sang it in the disco while inserting ‘Scotland’ in the words

On the other hand; your point about being custom made for its target audience is a great one. Designed as an annoying earworm for the masses and it worked.

Yeah well sometimes you’ve got to look behind the superficial.

  26. Too many of the English lumpen proletariat / knuckle dragging Neanderthals have a Jewish / Irish background — the only history they remember comes from the tabloid press.

Very seldom post these days however i’m an avid reader of the blog

Firstly, condolensces to WeeFraTheTim on your loss , thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

Interested to see some of the comments and debate on Mikey, firstly i must declare a side in this as he is a family member, and i am immensely proud of him as a person and player. He has suffered some very unfortunate injuries throughout his career and hopefully keep himself fit and fulfill his potential. Some may say its too late for him at Celtic however i personally know his ability and believe he may come back and silence some of his critics.

The main reason for me coming out of my bunker is to say that despite the debate being balanced on here, it saddens me to see some of the vitriol aimed at him on a daily basis from so called Celtic fans on Social Media. I have tried my best to sit back and ignore it however trust me when its aimed at one of your own, who is a died in the wool Celtic man, it is tough. I have also seen him being labelled as big headed but trust me, a more down to earth, level headed boy you would be pushed to find.

Maybe his career will be may Celtic, maybe not but the pride i have in seeing him pull on the hoops will last forever.
