Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

Field of drams/fan-a-tic … cheers lads. Fanatic … just remember our bet … next year, I am confident you will be singing NB’s praises … I can hear it now! :)

Some second half by Seville … good football to watch … generally, I think the spanish game is pretty good …. good amount of skill, and attacking intent … also like the german league …. probably the two most enjoyable leagues to watch at the moment.

Which of our prospective Managers is reported to have said that on Sky Sports today.

If you knew anything about professional football you’d know we lost that game due to missed chances.

Celtic had thirty three attempts at goal ten on target, two goals.

Sevco had 10 attempts at goal, three on target, two goals.

I remember reading about this and Di Stefano wasn’t even there when McGrory, Cushley went to Madrid.

John became a teacher in Coatbridge and on retirement he set up the education facilities for the youth team players.

Bittons passing ability is a myth.

    The evidence does not support.

I have been critical of him all season.

I wondered if i was being harsh in my critique of him so at Ross ct watched him closely and wrote down his first half stats.

Of 9 forward passes 7 went to county players.

He had 14 sideways and backwards passes which made his completion rate seem better.

He in my opinion is a big reason for our struggles this season.

  13. Gooooood evening CQN

TBB form around 12.38 – spot on, frightening that a club like Celtic appear to not have any clear contingency plan in place for losing a manager ?

Corkcelt – I think a lot of merit in your comments, possibly negotiating a pay off – although his ex club are busy at the minute :-)

Bada Bing – would also agree structure a package to make role attractive basic £1.5m is afforable, (use some of that extra £10m we will be getting due to some new club joining the league )

Champions league qualification is now worth around £20m, give him a £1m bonus for this, another of get through group stage ? and another bonus for winning the treble – say £500k, a double £300k and if only league £150k

    So structure around success

Anyone aware, is John Kennedy still in his position within the club ?

Can I add I would take John Hughes as No2 to a new manager ? Would make more money in that role than he does at Inverness

  14. MIKE IN TORONTO

Looking forward to our Bitton banter next season.

This game is good but Liverpool’s fragility is there to see.

That defense ball watches more than us which is hard to believe.

The Liverpool body language changed after Sevilla equalised.

They need an organiser and leader at the back and someone to put a stronger mentality into Klopps team.

  15. mike in toronto on

    Fanatic …

how many players have come to Celtic over the last few years, get a ball, look for someone making a run, and seeing no one moving, throw up their hands in despair?

I can remember a few (including NB over the last few seasons. Eventually, they stop trying and resort to the usual sideways and backwards passing.

The coaching has suited a particular sort of player, but, in the large, has made most players look poorer than they really are, and in particular made certain types of players (e.g., those whose game is about moving the ball, like NB) look poorest of all ….

I genuinely believe that, in the right system with the right coach, he will be a revelation next season.

  16. Actually, I thought we lost at Hampden becasue we were shite, toothless, outcoached and bullied off the ball by an over-enthusiastic pub team whose energy and desire our highly-paid impostors could not be arsed to match.

Now it turns out we were superb and only failed due to bad luck at shooty-inny. Doh!

  17. Well done Seville!

Got a wee soft spot for you.

Oh and the English media are deluded fannies.
