Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

  3. Made the point on Clyde SSB tonight ( I know I know) that either Rodgers, Moyes or Keane would be on the face of it fantasti appointments as Celtic manager but for me Keane ticks all the boxes as opposed to most/

The importance of the Celtic’s marketability should not be underestimated and as such in Scotland, Ireland and abroad Keane is a bigger asset in that context.

They threw back Rodgers but cut me off when I clarified Rodgers is from the artificial statelet which doesnt carry the same weight as Keane from the Irish Republic, not from a marketing position it doesnt,

You dodged the main point about Sepeartists supporting Euro Union- it’s only the English they want to separate from.

And the opposition to the OBaF is not “getting into bed with Tories” part 2- it is every other party bar the SNP who have signed up to sink the legislation, contrary to your claim that they would quietly drop it after the election campaign.

The SNP response has been to call this an anti-sectarian measure and its opponents are being pro-Sectarian and kneejerk anti-SNP.

Ah! The politics of Project Fear- I remember it well.

Great post about reasons for being a Celltic supporter.

We don’t have anybody who’s as relaxed on the ball as Bitton. He can play a forward pass as well when given the licence. Potential to be a very fine player.

I was going to,get annoyed about it but then I realised that the Celtic board blamed the support for having to ask about it and then couldn’t be arsed telling us what the sfa said.

    In cahoots csc.

  14. Sevilla decide to wake up for 20 minute and dismantle Liverpool with finess and veracity, leaving them beat, bedraggled and dizzy. Sort of what I kept waiting for us to do at Hampden last month.

But there’s the difference – Liverpool found out Sevilla are the real deal, and the Huns found out we weren’t.

  15. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Is this Liverpool defence basically Brendan Rodgers’ personnel and set-up?
