Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

  4. WITS: Equally true story. I’ve brought over a thousand youngsters to Celtic Park, most of them EPL team supporters. The Liverpool fans who have also been to Anfield say that You’ll Never Walk Alone is far more powerful at our ground than theirs. Their typical reaction is ‘it would make the hairs on your neck stand up’.

They also say that the atmosphere at Celtic Park is much better than Anfield. Or at least that was the case about six years ago.

  11. Bitton is a curate’s egg. Which is great if you’re a curate needing an egg. Not so ideal if you’re picking a footie team.

I raved about him last season because he deserved significant credit. This season he’s been largely poor.

So he’s not a good or bad player. He’s a player who can play good (sic) or bad. A subtle but important distinction.

Nir Biton is a wonderful player. We should build our team around him and Scott Allen. He had a poor second half to the season but in general, I think he is probably the most talented player we have.

Spot on mate, the board have to realise what the support want….no cheap options.

Someone posted earlier, now that we have a monkey team in our league, there will be more money available.

Spend it on Brendan Rodgers, the season books sales will rise, especially if we get rid of the deadwood (maybe not that easy) and buy wisely…not the buy and try to sell on at a premium, it worked with some but to be honest, maybe we just broke even. HH

  21. Nir Bitton the most talented player we have ……good grief.

We beat Motherwell 7-0 because we had players who were willing to pass and move at speed. Bitton offers very little, slows the play right down and gives the opposition time to get back and cover. Let him join some other team to practise his pirouettes.

  22. thetimreaper on

Biton isn’t the kind of guy you want in the trenches with you I’m afraid. He did well in the second half of last season, when the team was doing very well. I would do well myself with a fully fit SB and Van Dijk beside me. Too often when things go wrong he loses his discipline and is happy to chuck it. I also think he takes too long to release the ball and seems to go on these daft runs to nowhere and ends up losing the ball. We look a better side without him, I think McGregor is a better option.

  23. Sipsini: I would like to see a managerial appointment who would enthuse the Celtic support, someone who would bring the crowds back to Celtic Park. I would be happy with Rodgers or Moyes or someone with a European pedigree. But there are no guarantees these days.

Lawwell & Co need to raise their game. Last Sunday apart, Celtic Park has been like a morgue for the six home games I attended. Were it not for the Green Brigade, there would be little atmosphere at home games.
