Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

    I said earlier.

Get all the candidates on the pitch at CP.

Similar to the Mascot’s Derby….first over the line, is the new manager.

A few qualifications though….staggered out, like the dugs at Ashfield.

    Davie Moyes gets 10 yards….Trap 1

    Telling you though, its dodgy.

Last time i was at Ashfield, last race, favourite was miles in front, and some joker in the crowd threw a half-munched pie onto the track.

Favourite swerved to gulp the pie……outsider, at 8-1 won the race.

Certain it was something to do with the local bookies at the track:)

    So….its Neil Lennon:)

“S.F.T.B. jokes about the relevance of body language.

No, I didn’t. I joked about people’s exaggerated claims to be able to read body language by just projecting their own views onto whatever they saw.

I wonder if he has ever played football.

I have. Very badly but your observation is a total non-sequitur unless it is a well established fact that footballers are good at reading Body Language. If so, it is an observation that has escaped common agreement.

    The body language expert……….Wee Bertie.

Was he now? I thought he was a very good footballer and a funny guy. I have never heard him boast about his abilities in this field. Did you discern this from your own reading of Bertie’s Body Language?

    ” Attitood “personified.

Bertie was a fine aggressive and confident footballer. So was Paul McStay. So is Lionel Messi. So is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. So was Henrik Larsson. All different characters, temperaments and personas. Which of them projected the best body language? Kenny Dalglish always looked like a grumpy so and so who was blowing oot his erchie….. until he scored or did something great- then a huge smile appeared.

And none of these guys ever claimed to be able to read body language.

Deila covered up his insecurity with his late unlamented “roar.”

You read too much into this. The crowd demanded the Ronny Roar – RD himself only wanted to use it on special occasions for the bigger victories. Nobody wanted it done when we were struggling, drawing or losing and RD was as relieved as anyone to put it out of the way as a “bonding with the fans” gesture until we had a league title to celebrate.

I think you are guilty of reading between the lines and finding the evidence you wanted to find.

“Bertie was a fine aggressive and confident footballer. ”

Unless you knew him to speak to personally , how do you know he was confident ?

    ————————————————————————————————————-

” The crowd demanded the Ronny Roar ”

After he introduced it . To shore up his lack of confidence.

A confident assured personality does not respond to “demands ” from the punters.

To requests perhaps. At his discretion.

  25. Is Celtic as a PLC run similar to that of a corporation?

I’ll admit to knowing heehaw about running a football club, but my experience and background in corporate structures and accountability is extensive.

Should the answer to my initial question be in the affirmative, a lot more heads should have rolled than just at the level of the much maligned Ronny Delia. Just saying.
