Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

The reason our negotiations for players and managers take longer is the complexity of the exit clause for an EPL GIG if they come calling.

I feel that Deila presided over a climate of disaffection and frustration .

Opinion : The players who initially went along with his ” methods ‘ gradually came to the realisation that they were being coached by a loser.

The last straw for Kris was the game in Norway when he was subbed just after laying on our goal .He demonstrated his anger and , in doing so , did us all a favour. He just reinforced for me what I had suspected for more than a year. The trite phrase……….he had lost the dressing room. They had no confidence in him.

The rest of the season was a hotch potch of agony and something less than ecstasy.Frankly , it was a fragile team which won the S.P.L. title.

For me , no joy , just relief.

My joy came with his departure.

Hunderbirds-I think trying to get guys in on a starting wage of 8k a week, which is commonplace at Celtic, will have to be overcome if we are trying to get Brendan or Davie Moyes in. We need to shed plenty of squad fillers and use the money to get some quality in IMO. HH

We have serious lack of planning issues

Why did we take so long to replace 2 centre backs last season when we knew they were going months in advance ?

Why did we struggle to get adequate support in for Leigh when we knew in advance … Blah!!?

Why are we struggling to replace Ronny when we knew in advance that he wasn’t going to be manager next season ?

If BR’s or DM’s networks only take in English based players at “north” of £8k.

Are they the guys we want to attract?

I seriously worry about the realism of EPL transfer values. I always did, but the new tv deal has only magnified the problem.

There must be better value away from England.

  20. As far as I’m concerned, Ronny handed in his notice a month ago so his replacement should have been in the job on Monday morning. We’ve been down this road before and been fed the usual tripe about how we go about interviewing in a professional manner with due diligence – the usual BS. I would like Brendan Rodgers but it’s more likely to be Yogi Hughes. We’ll see.

Never had any doubts that Seville would win that cup, the second goal was a brammer, also pointed out to my son the reason we “hate” the English has got nothing to do with his maw ;-) but because of decades of listening to their commentators and football pundits. I found it particularly amusing when Howard Webb wasn’t towing the party line. P45 in the post for you Howard.

Nir Bitton the most talented player we have ……good grief.

We beat Motherwell 7-0 because we had players who were willing to pass and move at speed. Bitton offers very little, slows the play right down and gives the opposition time to get back and cover. Let him join some other team to practise his pirouettes.

    THETIMREAPER

Biton isn’t the kind of guy you want in the trenches with you I’m afraid. He did well in the second half of last season, when the team was doing very well. I would do well myself with a fully fit SB and Van Dijk beside me. Too often when things go wrong he loses his discipline and is happy to chuck it. I also think he takes too long to release the ball and seems to go on these daft runs to nowhere and ends up losing the ball. We look a better side without him, I think McGregor is a better option.

    ………………………………

Nir Biton has turned in plenty of good performances for Celtic. Others were equally culpable this season. Stefan Johansen was mince all season but continuously turned out week after week. Scott Zbrown was so so mince. Maybe playing beside these two had a detrimental effect on Znir Biton’s performances.

  22. SydneyTim says sack Lawell now on

Saltires. We could not bring in an experienced Center half as that would cost money and was a risk to Peter lawwells bonus. Better for him to gamble on qualification and if win through great , if lose then sell VVD and still reach targets and max bonus

As for second striker see above for reasons , plus goal scorers usually above Peters salary cap

Good point about staying just in front.

Lawwell decided better to go back the way to competition in Scotland, than try and go forward in Europe.

    It’s all about the money.

Lawwell doesn’t want to be 15 ahead by Christmass, would rather it was tight, with Celtic prevailing in the end.

Football doesn’t work like that all the time, nothing surer you will get your fingers burned.

Personally can’t see us doing ten with Lawwell at the helm.

    Celtic’s right half from April 1964 ?

You will no doubt know that pre Jock Stein, the Celtic line up was never a settled eleven. However John Clark started most games at right half that season (1963/64). On the few occasions he did not play at right half (he would start at left half) or was not in the team his position was variously taken by John McNamee, Duncan McKay, Jim Brogan, Bobby Murdoch and a young Sammy Henderson.

John McNamee left to join Hibs and the following season I remember him being sent off against us in the League Cup semi final replay at Ibrox and swinging a kick at the Celtic dug out as he was escorted from the pitch!
