Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

John Collins saying in the Evening Times that John Hughes should be considered for the Celtic job as he has done such a good job at Inverness. So another one in the frame. H.H.

    Joe, fella Hail Hail.

Ye know, John Collins might indeed be pointing us in the direction of managerial pebble on the beach.

JC also points out that, maybe Yogi hasent been considered for the job because of – snobbery.

    Know what else ?

The more that ye think about it, Yogi could go on to do the same job with the players ‘already’ at his disposal at Celtic Park as, BR or, some other exotic name could for splashing out £10, £15, £20 million ? And, they’d be wanting paid £2 million a year for doing so.

I’ve said for years that, since the flattening of the Jungle the Celtic support has seen, rebels replaced by snobs.

How would Bro Walfrid feel about the snobs who are in control of the club today ?

The snobs who run the club who, looked the other way from all the R*ngers cheating.

The same snobs who, if voted in again by season ticket sales will look the other way when the cheating starts again.

How many trophies would BR have won had he been in charge of the players that Yogi has had over the recent period ?

Yogi plays football the Tommy Burns(RIP) way but, he know’s when to park the bus as well.

If TB(RIP) had known how to park the bus, the huns might not have reached 9 in a row….imho.

    Take care fella.

  8. If it’s Rodgers, that would be a bold and imaginative move by the club.

He’s a good manager, has handled one of the top jobs in world football, built a team from scratch at Swansea, and seems to play decent football.

Also, seems unlikely that Rodgers (or Moyes) would be cowed by PL. Therefore, his appointment likely signals a (long overdue) change in direction from the club.

    Fingers crossed…

With you all the way bud. Seems penny has dropped, somewhere re the way forward.

Mind you, if they are moving the way many of us have suggested for long and weary, which would involve sustainable debt of say £10m-£15m, how will that that go down on here with P67 and the like minded thinkers? Been telling us for as long as I recall that we cannot take on £10m debt in our environment, and ‘you don’t need to look far to see what can happen’

Yep, Peter Lawell will be getting it tight on here I assume if we run up some debt? Calls for his head I guess. Assuming of course the narrative is gonna remain consistent? Right?

  11. MacJay. Ronny always struck me as a polite guy.

TnT… Debt, sensibly managed, and wisely used, need not be a problem for a club like ours, with tens of thousands of fans and a board full of business big-hitters.

Even RFC could have stepped back from the abyss at any moment up till about 12 months before they sold to Whyte. Their were sunk by insane financial gambling, utterly ludicous spending in the face of mounting debt and falling revenue, and an owner whose own business was sinking like a stone.

Of course, that can happen to anyone – including us – but bankrupting a large football club really does take quite a lot of effort!

IMHO, it’s all about investment – our current strategy of zero debt has virtually guaranteed we lose out on CL revenues (as others invest and improve), and therefore our overall revenues and standing falls.

We need to break this vicious circle.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. Champions league qualification is now worth around £20m, give him a £1m bonus for this, another of get through group stage ? and another bonus for winning the treble – say £500k, a double £300k and if only league £150k.

I would add that if PL still in place or another (wee praying hands) that their bonus is structured 50% based on profit & loss and 50% based on the product at the centre of the business.

That way we will have both a manager and a CEO with an incentive to a successful footballing department.
