Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

“Unless you knew him to speak to personally , how do you know he was confident ? ”

Bertie has given many interviews and he has spoken of his self-belief. Paul McStay never spoke in the same terms but still showed imperious skills on the pitch. Should I assume he was equally confident? Do I base this on his skill and performance? Or on what they did or did not say in interviews?

“After he introduced it . To shore up his lack of confidence.”

Do you remember when it first appeared? (my recollection was when he and the crowd were buzzed after a win against our nearest rival at their place but there may have been earlier examples). Whenever it happened, did you know he lacked confidence before he did the Ronny Roar? Or did the Ronny Roar reveal this to you in a flash of inspiration? Or did you merely assert it because you happened to believe it?

This unconfident individual managed to inspire belief in a group of journeymen from Stromgodset to punch way above their weight. he was confident enough in himself to put himself forward for a big job at Celtic. He was confident enough to persuade our Board to overlook several other candidates with more local experience and to advance him from the asst. managers list to the main one. And he was confident enough to play a suicidally open style of football when the more scared and unconfident among us, like me, were looking for the coward’s option of Safety First.

“Kenny Dalglish always looked like a grumpy

-So,you read his body language and decided he was “grumpy.”

Ah! I see- you have decided that I am rubbishing the reading of signs in total- some sort of extreme denial that the concept of Body Language exists. No- it’s much simpler than that- my point was that most people over-reach in reading body language and tend to attribute their own thoughts and projections to the targeted body they are reading. Now that would be true of my observations on King Kenny if my views were controversial, a minority opinion, or too detailed a dissection of his personality based on too little evidence- an over-reach. But, Kenny himself has commented on how often people saw him that way and his team mates have commented on this aspect of his on-field persona. Elite players express their elite status differently. Zlatan is haughty, Kenny was grumpy then delighted, The Maestro was swan-like in not displaying any tension or nerves. Bertie was extrovert, crowd pleasing and aggressive in the way he played. This is a far cry from interpreting that a gesture like the Ronny Roar betrays deep seated insecurities or that how he leans against a dug out indicates defeatism or how a lack of or too much agitation on the touchline reveals innermost thoughts.

Stress occurs for managers and coaches and players during matches. Our greatest manager died of it. No-one would accuse Jock of lacking confidence but, in common with all human beings, he will have had his doubting moments and his trials in questioning his own abilities.

““Common agreement “……….That`s your criterion reaching a conclusion ?”

It’s one of them. The other criteria have been mentioned above. If all your mates and acquaintances describe you as an ugly bassa but you remain convinced you are God’s gift to women, who do you think is more likely to be right. The common view is never a clinching argument but it is one that cannot be dismissed out of hand. Add to that the players own statements and their friends statements about them, reading their autobiographies and even their press (taken with a large pinch of sodium chloride in Scotland) adds to the picture.

“Why did Bertie sit on the ball against Clyde ( I think it was ? )

Do you think he needed a rest ? ”

Are you asserting that he did it in order to demonstrate his expertise in interpreting (though I now think you are trying to assert that Bertie was trying to communicate Confidence through) Body Language. Well, if so, it was a rare experiment- and tricks like that such as Kanchelskis (who was very far from being Bertie’s equivalent) standing on the ball and saluting are more inclined to invoke rage in the less controlled professional opponents than awe or fear.

However, even if Bertie had never sat on a ball, the opposition would have discerned that Bertie was a confident gallus player. And they would know this through the more trusted communication channel of speech- because Bertie told them what he was gonna do and Bertie verbally wound them up to gain any competitive advantage he could by making them second guess. And again, I know this, not through Body language interpretation or my super hearing, but because Bertie has shared his secrets with the world, thankfully, and he told us.

Now, I could be equally perverse and assert that those who need to demonstrate audibly and by Body Language or by gallus footballing flourishes that are not particularly functional (standing or sitting on a ball), that these guys are trying too hard to show their confidence and that betrays a deep insecurity.

But that would be a reach.

  2. Wow. Stop this madness Dermot. You’ll have us bankrupt. We can’t hope to be in the CL whilst an SPL club. We should be content to be in the Europa League at best. Don’t you read CQN?

““We’re looking forward to the next manager building us up to Champions League contenders. It must be the right man.”

  3. Brendon Rodgers would not be my preferred choice.

At Swansea he really contined with the system that had been put in place by Roberto Martinez.

With Liverpool he nearly grabbed the PL crown but he did have the world-class Suarez and Sturrige banging in the goals. There after it went down-hill.

I’d prefer Martinez in spite of Evertons poor last seasons form.

R M has a strong vision of how to play football and has being successful in implimenting this at several clubs.

To be honest I don’t understand the European Union enough to vote on it either way. BTW. You guys do know if you want to vote on it you need to register to vote in it. Doesn’t matter if your registered to vote in national or local election or not already,

Juergen Klopp has taken Liverpool downhill since he replaced Brendan Rodgers in my book, an opinion shared by some of my Liverpool supporting mates. A few good performances in the Europa League this season notwithstanding they are not even in Europe next season after last night.

    Rodgers would do me.

  7. Moonbeamswd – according to this as long as you’re registered to vote, you can vote. You don’t need to do a special registration for the EU referendum. Where did you hear otherwise?

By that reasoning then MON wasn’t very good. He already had Henrik banging in goals, Lubo’s magic & the solid and exceptional Lambert ( the Sevco sympathiser).

I think RM is a decent enough guy, but not convinced in his managerial ability. 29% win rate at Wigan, and got them relegated too.

Thought he started ok at Everton but went downhill.

On the plus side he of course won an FA cup with Wigan, and Everton are notoriously tight with the budget, so difficult in a tough league.

SPL I’m sure he’d skate it. European football? Hard to judge I think.

Champions league qualification is now worth around £20m, give him a £1m bonus for this, another of get through group stage ? and another bonus for winning the treble – say £500k, a double £300k and if only league £150k.

I would add that if PL still in place or another (wee praying hands) that their bonus is structured 50% based on profit & loss and 50% based on the product at the centre of the business.

That way we will have both a manager and a CEO with an incentive to a successful footballing department.

You don’t half talk some mince MWD. However, in this case I completely agree! :-)

Having bonus payments linked to footballing success is the only way to get business guys to behave the way you want them to. I know it’s not the same as sales men selling widgets (i.e. a direct incentive), but having no kind of link there encourages very narrow thinking based on counting beans.

  15. Like all celtic men . We’re looking for the suits to deliver the right man , to once again take us to the top table . Big jock had it right , Europe is where celtic should be , a top notch manager /coach could go a long way to making it happen , do that and up here should take care of itself . With or without the MIBS

  16. Martinez has a deep flaw in that he doesn’t know what a defence is. Going forward his teams are great but defensively they are a shambles.

Rodgers at Swansea did in one season what neither Martinez nor Sousa could do, get them promoted. He then finished a very creditable 12th in their first season in EPL. He spent a net £12m in those two season with many of those bought sold on for large profit (eg Sinclair, Vorm) or still part of the first team at Swansea (eg. Sigardsson, Routledge, Taylor).

Even without Suarez (sold) and Sturridge (injured) he still managed a 6th place finish in EPL in 14/15 season with Liverpool.

Morning Bhoys what is the true story behind John Hughes leaving Inverness is it as the MSM say due to the fact he didnt get to sign a player he had on loan at the club who has gone on to join Aberdeen ? Or is it because Celtic asked permission to speak to him and the Inverness Chairman would not give his permission ? The whole new manager for Celtic is bubbling away furiously. H.H.

  20. So! They wanted rid of RD, that’s done he’s gone, and going by some of the posts, none of the names in the ring are good enough? Fan representation on the board? 25. What Brendon does have going for him is what appears to be a genuine warmth for Celtic and that is a big plus.

Until this season with Evertons inexplicable form slump Roberto Martinez was THE manger most likely to take over a top 4 epl club. A year ago I bet most Celtic fans would have jumped at the chance of of taking him.

But as we know a year is a long time in football.

they got to the semi finals of the fa and league cups, and played in the champions league, they played a lot of football that season and the striking options were balotelli, lambert and borini.

    6th was a decent finish

  27. How very typical of people here. Seek to undermine a manager that’s not even appointed yet.

  28. Go tell the Spartim on

i think the new manager, whoever he may be, will have to convince some people, if its BR then its the intent behind the appointment thats crucial.

at least if its BR he has a Celtic background of sorts, which is vitally important for some, whether they admit it or not.

RM cant organise a defence so it would be just an extension of the RD experiment.
