Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

    Will DD back him?

    I honestly believe so.

I’d assume at interview , given DD comments that CL is a must, he’d ask any candidate what he feels is needed to get there.

If the potential manager has any strength and courage of conviction he’s going to be honest and tell him, I’d need X amount of a budget, and hopefully some discussion on potential transfers in and out would ensue.

I’d have done my homework and said I’d feel X number of players would not be required, and could be sold ASAP, and that I’d want to bring in a quality defender, midfielder etc.

Yes of course, realism is required. £10m net spend, £15m, who knows.

I’d think, and no one can know for sure, £15m spent wisely would have seen us past Maribor?

Sounds as though Dermot is thinking that sound investment is needed in both a manager and playing staff.

I note DD states the new manager ” needs to build to get us to CL”.

2 transfer windows? Aiming for the season after this approaching one?

    Perhaps.

    Wee story.

Recently attended a lecture given by a ‘Scots’ historian.

He gave the lecture in a broad Dundee accent….good piece of work.

Although…i couldnt help thinking about Oor Wullie, Soapy Souter, and PC Murdoch:)

Hopefully our new man is working on his body language today. The CQN scrutineers have their eyes peeled:)

  8. Rodgers is the one for me this time. I’m not bothered too much about how things turned out at Liverpool; when you lose your best players and they are not replaced, as we know, you tend to go backwards. He did well at Swansea, played good, solid, attractive football and delivered results against better sides – which is probably why Liverpool wanted him in the first place.

You can’t afford to be bitter, but did Martinez not turn us down a few years ago? Maybe not, but if it was him perhaps his defensive system would have better results against spfl forwards which may give the team time to learn and perfect it? (Dream on…)

I think it’ll be NL – which would be fine. He knows the score.

  9. The IFA yesterday gave the SFA a run for its money in sheer disregard for the rules of the game they’re charged with upholding…

Carrickfergus Rangers FC ( from a predominantly unionist area) broke a touch line suspension imposed on their manager who duly took his place on the sideline for the must win final game of the season which they won to stay up. Having be made aware of their rule breach which carries an automatic match forfeit that imposed would have allowed Warrenpoint Town FC (from a predominantly Nationalist area) to stay up, relegating Carrickfergus Rangers.

The IFA have instead for the first time in history refused to implement the rule book on suspension breeches and used their ‘discretion’ to allow Carrickfergus off with no punishment whatsoever.

Good Luck to Poland, Ukraine and Germany in the coming weeks…
