Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

  1. I wonder if whoever gets the head coach job will have an assistant that he usually works with in tow, if not I think John Hughes would be a good influence from a motivational point of view, but under no circumstances insist that the new head coach must chose Hughes.

    Quonno,

Didn’t think John McNamee was a right half. Thought he was a centre half. Only right half I remember of that time was the great Paddy Crerand.

Crerand was well gone by the time we are talking about.

    From last night.

“Can you think of a compromise that Labour and Tory would be party to, to save SNPs face? ”

I can think they may be forced to leave the online section of the Bill intact in order to get rid of the rest. Their motivation in compromising would be to get rid of the worst of the Bill. It is the SNP who will insist on a compromise short of total defeat of the Act in order to save their face.

You can let us know nearer the time if you are persuaded to be a Unionist re the EU. That jibe was freely handed out to many of us a few years ago. Now, it will fit every SNP backer with the exception of Jim Sillars.

Compromise involves more than one party saving face. In this particular case three and possibly four opposition parties will have to compromise among themselves before reaching any compromise with SNP.

Given the harsh lesson of Labour standing shoulder to shoulder with the Tories in the Independence Referendum, I imagine that Kezia Douglas will not be getting into bed with the Tories without an awful lot of ‘Ah well but you seeing’.

In my previous postings on the OB Act, I indicated that an amendment or two would be the likely outcome.

As for the EU Referendum. A total waste of public time and money.

There is absolutely no way that a British government of any political complexion will accept and exit vote.

Should such an outcome emerge, folk like Ruth Davidson and Willie Rennie who spent the Holyrood Election campaign denouncing the prospect of a second Indepedence Referendum, will be demanding an immediate second referendum on Europe.

Was only just talking about this a few weeks ago. I asked about John Clark being right half? I think it was BSR who confirmed to me John Clark originally played right half. ( the song goes Clark McNeill and Kennedy the best you’ve ever seen)

Jock Stein seemingly moved JC to left half.

  5. If Rodgers is indeed the man, why the hell is he not in the door right now. Celtic simply cannot afford any time nannying about.

Open to correction. The night he scored cup replay winner at Easter road in 1961, John Clark was at left half.

  8. If an announcement is going to be made in 4-5 days, it will have to be good appointment to steal the thunder from the potential global coverage of a new teams SC victory. I am hoping that today’s PR statements are a recognition of L5s influence and a new direction to obfuscate the SMSM… and generate SB sales.

A Rodgers with assistant Keane (joining after the Euros) or di Matteo with assistant Lambert or an ambitious combo similar would defo do the trick.

interesting little discussion about who played right half around 1964.

I haven’t cheated but I’m sure there were a few who tried… John Kurila, Big Billy with Bobby Evans at centre half, John Clark, Eric Smith, Johnny Kelly but I think probably most appearances would have been John Clark.

Somebody put me out of my misery.

Also i hope it’s an imaginative appointment of manager and my preference would be Brendan Rodgers.

The half back line in the song was Clark, McNeill and Kennedy.

Bobby Murdoch was inside right at the time. I think his first game at right half might have been the 65 cup final.

I see more posts about renewing if and when a new manager is appointed… and other posts about how we have never had it so good (presumably because we have won the last few league titles).

For me (I wont presume to speak for others), if I decide to walk away or stay following Celtic … it will have NOTHING to do with the success or lack thereof on the pitch. It wont even have to do with the quality or the lack thereof of the football on display.

I dont follow Celtic because they win. If that was all I wanted, I would follow Barca, or Real Madrid, or a host of other teams who win bigger and more prestigious trophies.

I dont follow Celtic because of the silky football they play. It would be nice if they did, but they dont.

Ultimately, I follow Celtic because of what Celtic represents …. as the late Tommy Burns said, “When you pull on that jersey you’re not just playing for a football club, you’re playing for a people and a cause.””

Now, some of may disagree on exactly who the people are and what the cause is (I dont think you have to be of Irish background to ‘get it’, but I think it adds something for those of us who are). But, I think (at least I hope) that we all agreed that Celtic meant standing up for what is right, and fighting the good fight (even if it meant persevering in the face of rank cheating). It means fighting to keep the tricolour flying over paradise…. it means fighting to get Jim Farry removed for cheating ….

For me, that ’cause’ doesn’t include ….putting profits ahead of principles (the two can and should work together) … or going along with the 5WA … it doesn’t mean crapping all over the GB and Celtic fans, or turning a blind eye when others do …. it doesn’t mean turning a blind eye when everyone refers to the dead company as R****S

Personally, I would like to see a foreign manager, but, at the end of the day, I dont really care who coaches, and, as the song says, I dont care if we win, lose or draw …. at the end of the day, I just want a club that I can be proud of once again.

That isn’t to say I’m adverse to making a profit …. we need money to keep going…. but at the end of the day, Tommy Burns never said “When you pull on that jersey you’re not just playing for a football club, you’re playing for your bonus and a bottom line.”

Some things are move valuable than trophies or profits.
