Money v Morals, voice of football fans can decide

879

Scottish football is posed for the most momentous stand-off in its history.  The battle lines are clear:

Money v Morals, TV money v Season ticket money, Bank of Scotland v Fans

In 12 days the SPL clubs will vote on resolutions which will enable a new club to parachute straight into the SPL following the liquidation of Rangers without having to apply for entry to the Scottish Football league and rise through the pyramid.  Five clubs can block their entry – for a few days anyway.  Six, a majority if one member is liquidated, would be enough to ensure Rangers Newco SPL entry is blocked.

According to the SPL Fan Survey fans would overwhelmingly like to see any Newco football club enter the Scottish Football League, a position supported by a large number of Rangers fans, but the voices of fans are more easily discarded than that of the Bank of Scotland, who a large number of clubs depend upon to keep their own clubs out of administration.

In short, unless clubs can demonstrate to the Bank of Scotland that they will lose more money from disaffected fans by voting for Newco than they will by voting to retain the custom of Rangers fans, with accompanying television and sponsor money, Newco FC will be voted into the SPL.

Celtic will vote against Newco but fans from Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Inverness, St Johnstone, Motherwell and St Mirren have to do more to make their case directly with their clubs.  Irrespective of fan views, I reckon Dunfermline shareholders would rather relegate their own team than Rangers.  Don’t even ask about Kilmarnock.

The Gang of 10 may speak as one.  If they get rid of Rangers they will be able to out-vote Celtic and have a unique opportunity to change voting rights, allowing them to capture long-term money currently going to Celtic.  This, together with overwhelming fan pressure, might be enough to persuade some, but this issue is more complex.

Despite initial opposition to changing the voting rights, Duff and Phelps may vote with the Gang of 10 on voting rights as part of a deal to allow them to sell a place in the SPL.  Yes – trade votes in order to sell a place in the top league.  Sporting integrity dismantled forever.

Since we first raised the alarm on this vote back in October I have been convinced Newco would be ushered into the SPL but the weight of opinion from fans from other clubs is stark.  Over half of respondents to the Survey say they will not attend SPL games if Newco is voted straight into the league.

Even the Bank of Scotland would have to recognise the business sense in siding with the fans if this view is made firmly enough.

Truth is, no one knows which way this one will go, but this is a once in a century opportunity for fans to make a stand.

Bids for the original canvass painting of Neil Lennon by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, has topped £600! Keep an eye on the auction, which ends tomorrow, here.

  1. Just caught the end of the Scottish news. Didn’t know there was another deadline from D&P for offers, as Kennedy is back in with another offer. Will this ever end?

Prob not. Not until they set a deadline for setting deadlines. It’s classic Agent Whyte procrastination. Which is all part of the big plan :D

I am in Macae but may be in Rio for the hunz game. Where do you guys watch the games?

  7. The Exiled Tim,he couldn’t train just turned up and played, new Brady would be a dud when he signed Gary Gillespie instead of him.Mcgrath credits Graham Taylor for extending his career as he put a babysitter on him(the old demon drink) but what a defender for club and country.

  9. After years of training and honing his skills on the football pitch, Lee McCulloch’s dream of playing wing forward in the Aviva Premiership as Brian Kennedy launches yet another bid for Rankers. As part of the deal, Kennedy will be able to call upon the professionals at Ibrox should his Sale Sharks find their squad depleted.

Meanwhile, Rankers have been re-listed on eBay (sporting memorabilia) as Mr P Murray blots his feedback rating and pulls out of the proposed purchase. Just 6 months, 21 days and 3 hours and 4 minutes until the deadline for bids closes.

Great quote but it was not from Neil Lennon.

I have a house in Granada, Spain and the actual quote from Xavi hangs proudly on the wall. He also talks about acceptance in our respective ” countries “.

    I applaud the sentiment.

  11. Due to my hectic schedule I am only now getting to review the highlights of the game on Sunday. The main reason was to see just how far offside Gary Hooper was, because he was offside. Right? I mean everyone was talking about it!! “aye, penalty was harsh but sure yous had an offside goal allowed!”

    WWWWTTTTFFFFFF?????

He is CLEARLY 6-8 inches ONSIDE!!!!

Sorry if i missed a lot of discussion about this but I actually couldnt believe what I was seeing given what id heard.

Also, BBC Scotland website story STILL reads “Television replays showed that Hooper was in an offside position to nod Celtic level, but Sergio was unconcerned.”

    Ridiculous!!!!

Has anyone let them know about this ‘honest mistake’, and has it been acknowledged publicly that it was onside yet???

  12. Walker, Burley, Nicholas………

common denomintor….one good season with us and appaling european records not even beyond guy fawkes night ! All 3 turned out to be imposters and a far distance from even Dalglish and Hay in terms of loyalty.

differentiators….Walker and Nicholas were brought up as celtic supporters and should know a lot better…..they are a bigger let down than the ignoramus that is Burley. A bitter hun by upbringing, even more than Provan or Mcleod. He never lost his bitterness, and sadly destroyed Dr Jo’s chances and undermined Fergus at every turn. What a contrast to Lambert who was also not brought up a Celtic fan but is of different moral fibre.

For me Walker is the biggest let down, as he is fairly intelligent by comparison (it is all relative of course). Nicholas is just an uneducated ned who got lucky. His football playing record is a joke, given the potential and opportunity he had. He won virtually nothing….1 league medal (Celtic), 1 Cup (Aberdeen), 2 league Cups (Celtic and Arsenal)…….Walker also won only 1 league and a few other cups. Like provan and Mcleod, and Burley NONE of these critics achieved anything in europe…..yet they stand in judgement of our current squad.

I read his book years ago, the old grey matter doesn’t remember things like the old days, still have the book, need to give it another read, but I do remember having respect for him,he also, if I recal, knew he was a bad bugger, and regretted his actions, he knew it was his fault and the drink was just an excuse.

  14. Allgreen tthinks SPL are at it on

Drogba is one of the worst cheats playing in world football. He goes down injured more than any other player I’ve seen. Funny thing is he rarely falls down when Chelsea have the ball. It’s all a con as he only gets hurt when the opposition are in possession and the game stops.

In the second leg Barcelona shouldn’t knock the ball out of play as this is just a cheat’s charter for cowards.

I would love to see him get a full blooded kick in the swanicles from Victor, that would be real pain.

Allgreen tthinks SPL are at it

Aye, it’s really disappointing to see a player with that skill resort to such hun methods. He used it effectively to break up the play and waste time.

Shameless stuff, and, as it’s already been called tonight, utter anti-football.

I wondered if a few Laughatme clips might shame him into stopping such behaviour though. I think so.

  16. Anybody looked recently at what the Neil Lennon drawing is going for? What a response to the Lennon haters!

  17. Knoxy2000@23.06pm

Like you I only looked at the BBC highlights tonight. Given all the issues that the last few minutes of this game threw up it would be reasonable to assume that the Celtic penalty claim might have merited a replay. Guess what.

Joe Ledley was actually looking the other way when the ball crashed into his elbow/arm. A huge decision to give a penalty but I saw my first Celtic game in 1949 so it didn’t really surprise me. It made me very angry but not surprised.

Neil Lennon grew up with this sort of anti Celtic mind set in his Plantation town, went away from it to a quiet life in England but now in Glasgow it confronts him at all sorts of levels. How utterly frustrating must it be for him to be aware that a lot of this stuff that impacts upon Celtic is more than just ” honest mistakes”. We could all just about live with incompetence and have a right good moan about it but most of us Celtic supporters know the truth of the matter. We are not playing the cosy game of reassuring one another that we are being victimised. Being lazy in our assessment of the situation. We have known many of these controversial referees and officials in a social context. They do Celtic no favours.

    Support Neil Lennon.

As long as it’s not Shug Gallus trying to get it, so he can hang it upside down at his solo Satanic rituals, where he invites his apprentice boy MIBs to practice pulling red cards at it.

Garcia lorca. With the bullying our manager is getting even from our own (my God) I reckoned even though he didn’t say it he should have. Every time I read Xavi’s quote I feel better about everything. As a club, a family and as a human being. I thought Neil would be worthy of it. Which he is obviously!! HH.

I have every confidence that Neil ( ” this is not the end, this is just the beginning ” ) will produce something equally uplifting to make your days brighter.

He knows his history and he breathes Celtic. Shame on those who criticise him. Helpful friendly hints, observations? Of course, anytime. Those who blindly follow the MSM agenda are truly cretins.

Yep, well said. He’s here for the long haul. And it will be a big haul :))

I do wonder who is behind the agenda this week to reinstigate the demonisation process though.

You would think someone at the SFA who wants to deflect and who has experience in these matters. I wish I could say that narrows it down !

We are blessed to have Lenny with us at this time.

Your analogy struck a cord. Only this afternoon I dug out a piece by John Rafferty ( KELLY: The Man who was Celtic ) in the Sunday Observer about the funeral of the late Sir Robert Kelly. He describes how Kelly could be a difficult man to deal with because he had grown up a Celtic man and to be a Celtic man was not the done thing in polite Scottish society. He went on to describe the formation of Celtic and to his readership ( I think this is early 70’s ) mostly English he explained that to understand Celtic one had to imagine a Pakistani team forming, being successful and being supported by an immigrant population engaged in menial occupations. They would be looked down on and sneered at.

John Rafferty argued that times had changed and with Celtic’s success came acceptance and even admiration.

Penny for the thoughts of the late, great John Rafferty now.

I really must post that article.

garcia lorca. Watching and supporting Celtic does me fine. Thanks. I reversed Xavi’s qoute as Neil is worthy of it. Quite where the MSM got a mention is a mystery!! They are not worthy. Me and two of my bhoys will be in the south stand at Murderwell on Sunday giving it loud. HH to our Leader. HH.
