Money v Morals, voice of football fans can decide

879

Scottish football is posed for the most momentous stand-off in its history.  The battle lines are clear:

Money v Morals, TV money v Season ticket money, Bank of Scotland v Fans

In 12 days the SPL clubs will vote on resolutions which will enable a new club to parachute straight into the SPL following the liquidation of Rangers without having to apply for entry to the Scottish Football league and rise through the pyramid.  Five clubs can block their entry – for a few days anyway.  Six, a majority if one member is liquidated, would be enough to ensure Rangers Newco SPL entry is blocked.

According to the SPL Fan Survey fans would overwhelmingly like to see any Newco football club enter the Scottish Football League, a position supported by a large number of Rangers fans, but the voices of fans are more easily discarded than that of the Bank of Scotland, who a large number of clubs depend upon to keep their own clubs out of administration.

In short, unless clubs can demonstrate to the Bank of Scotland that they will lose more money from disaffected fans by voting for Newco than they will by voting to retain the custom of Rangers fans, with accompanying television and sponsor money, Newco FC will be voted into the SPL.

Celtic will vote against Newco but fans from Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Inverness, St Johnstone, Motherwell and St Mirren have to do more to make their case directly with their clubs.  Irrespective of fan views, I reckon Dunfermline shareholders would rather relegate their own team than Rangers.  Don’t even ask about Kilmarnock.

The Gang of 10 may speak as one.  If they get rid of Rangers they will be able to out-vote Celtic and have a unique opportunity to change voting rights, allowing them to capture long-term money currently going to Celtic.  This, together with overwhelming fan pressure, might be enough to persuade some, but this issue is more complex.

Despite initial opposition to changing the voting rights, Duff and Phelps may vote with the Gang of 10 on voting rights as part of a deal to allow them to sell a place in the SPL.  Yes – trade votes in order to sell a place in the top league.  Sporting integrity dismantled forever.

Since we first raised the alarm on this vote back in October I have been convinced Newco would be ushered into the SPL but the weight of opinion from fans from other clubs is stark.  Over half of respondents to the Survey say they will not attend SPL games if Newco is voted straight into the league.

Even the Bank of Scotland would have to recognise the business sense in siding with the fans if this view is made firmly enough.

Truth is, no one knows which way this one will go, but this is a once in a century opportunity for fans to make a stand.

Bids for the original canvass painting of Neil Lennon by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, has topped £600! Keep an eye on the auction, which ends tomorrow, here.

  8. CELTIC have targeted giant Brazilian keeper Fabiano Ribeiro for a £1m swoop should Fraser Forster quit Parkhead.

Hoops scouts have watched the 6ft 6in tall 24 year old who plays for Portuguese side Olhanense several times in the past month after receiving rave reports on his form.

Now Manager Neil Lennon whose preference is to hold on to the services of the on loan Newcastle keeper on a permanent basis but has failed to reach any agreement could have to decide on pursuing Ribeiro or moving for Scotland international keeper Craig Gordon on a free transfer from Sunderland. His wages however are sky high and a series of injury problems has hamperted his career.

With several Premiership clubs interested in Forster his agents are said to be be ” unconvinced ” of the merits of him remaining in the SPL especially as the keeper is also keen to showcase his talent south of the border which could help his international ambitions .

Ribeiro who has been a surprise package in the Portuguese league this season is “owned” partly by the club and his Brazilian and Portuguese “advisors ” who are keen for him to gain Champions League experience as a bigger platform for him to earn a move to a top club in Spain or England.

Olhanense president Isidoro Sousa confirmed Celtic’s interest in the former Sao Paulo youngster saying : ” There are clubs in Germany and Ukraine who are also watching him .We are calm about the situation and he will only be allowed to leave if we receive a £1m offer.”

Should Celtic enter the bidding they would have no problem with a work permit as Ribeiro has a Portuguese passport.

Why not just bring back the Holy Goalie on a Bosman?

  12. serge,

used to go to school with the celtic dj, he was the man who brought us ” let the people sing ” on the night JVH scored the winner against the orcs on the road to the last league title. still reckon he won us the league that year by playing that song that night, built up the atmosphere for a great evening.

  13. Morning CQNer’s

I would just like to say….I called the DR – ‘Hotline’ yesterday and spoke to a journalist, an English man called, Chris Roberts and, he did not in any way come across as your average LL would be expected to. I was surprised by this guy, a Mancunian who supports Man Utd.

Anyway, after seeing the evidence provided by – Big Nan on CQN yesterday morning, I had to call. I was hoping it would be Hugh Keevins whom, I have gotten on very well with in the past. I must say that.

So I made the point about – “Celtic fans on the ‘hotline’ saying that, Neil was a disgrace and, we wouldn’t have seen Big Jock or, Jimmy McGrory running onto the pitch!”

Well, I told Chris about Jock going onto the pitch to confront Bobby Davidson and, I seemed to get the impression that, like that other Englishman Alex Thompson, their eyes were opened to the truth about this sectarian – pitt!

So, in the DR today, Chris printed my point about Jock and, it seemed to spark a two page spread in the paper featuring former Airdrie manager, John McVeigh who was banned by the SFA for 4 YEARS!!!

McVeigh is of the opinion that – “The ref’s are out to get Neil Lennon and, Celtic!”

I’m sorry i don’t know how to do the link-thing, maybe someone could get a copy of the article for you all to read :)))

    Hail Hail

  17. Referee’s are an integral part of the game. In Scotland they will very often be one of the most highly paid individuals on the pitch. They are invariably from professional backgrounds.

Referee’s shouldn’t be called biased or cheats unless evidence is provided.

Referee’s should be publicly criticised by managers for errors they make that affect games.

Referee’s should be able to handle pressure put onto them by managers prior to games therefore managers should be able to state they expect a performance from a referee.

Referee’s should be made to publicly explain decisions and be held accountable.

Football is a high pressure game and referee’s have a massive bearing on this. If they can’t handle the pressure that goes with top level refereeing and professional football they shouldn’t be refereeing top level football.

  18. Good luck to our manager today at the vipers nest.

Hoping Mr.Ogg is in top form and exposes Murray and Brines for what they are, match fixers.

I would like Celtic TV to do a show with coverage of all the recent so called ‘honest mistakes’ then post it on you tube.

Somebody mentioned earlier about Elbows thuggery, do what the Barca players started to do last night, take a step back and watch the idiot crashing into the ground as he is not attacking the ball, we then collect the loose ball and get straight up the park again.

  24. All 4 bidders for the Huns have publicly stated they are there to rescue the “institution” that is Rangers. Philanthropists to a man.

The Blue Knights £10m on the table.

Singapore Slingers £14m on the table

Yanks circa £18m on the table.

Kennedy is expected to come in around the Singapore level.

If they are so concerned with saving Rangers why don’t they all pitch in together? *tumbleweed*

All bids have major outstanding conditions attached to them. None of them have had a firm indication from Whyte as to what they will get or how much he wants exactly to walk away. This is what due dilligence is for he says.

As the most excellent Paul McC has written they run out of dosh at the end of June.

10 weeks. 10 weeks till D&P themselves have to pull the shutters down and put a comedy padlock on those gates.

10 weeks to scour the books and try and find hidden nasties. A job that took Whyte 6 months.

10 weeks to agree a solid deal with Ticketus.

10 weeks to to do a deal with Whyte for his shareholding / security that gives him more money than his security would get him if they are liquidised.

10 weeks to create, propose and agree a CVA with the creditors (with a joke of a sum of money aswell). There are statutory timescales attached to this that Paul Mc says if the process is kicked off today will be Mid June before that can be finished.

Without any hitches whatsoever that is squeeky bum stuff. There is virtually no chance of there being no hitches. Ellis is the one to watch for a last minute gun to the head lawsuit for his money.

From what I have been told, as of Monday night, there were 4 real options for them:

0% chance of a CVA and Rangers 1872 existing for next season.

25% chance of Rangers 2012 playing SPL football next year.

50% chance of Rangers 2012 playing Division 3 football next year.

25% chance of Rangers 2012 not playing any football next year and being brought back in under new SFA league for 2013/14 season.

The odds of options 2 and 3 happening diminish by the day.

    Tick Tock
