Money v Morals, voice of football fans can decide

879

Scottish football is posed for the most momentous stand-off in its history.  The battle lines are clear:

Money v Morals, TV money v Season ticket money, Bank of Scotland v Fans

In 12 days the SPL clubs will vote on resolutions which will enable a new club to parachute straight into the SPL following the liquidation of Rangers without having to apply for entry to the Scottish Football league and rise through the pyramid.  Five clubs can block their entry – for a few days anyway.  Six, a majority if one member is liquidated, would be enough to ensure Rangers Newco SPL entry is blocked.

According to the SPL Fan Survey fans would overwhelmingly like to see any Newco football club enter the Scottish Football League, a position supported by a large number of Rangers fans, but the voices of fans are more easily discarded than that of the Bank of Scotland, who a large number of clubs depend upon to keep their own clubs out of administration.

In short, unless clubs can demonstrate to the Bank of Scotland that they will lose more money from disaffected fans by voting for Newco than they will by voting to retain the custom of Rangers fans, with accompanying television and sponsor money, Newco FC will be voted into the SPL.

Celtic will vote against Newco but fans from Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United, Inverness, St Johnstone, Motherwell and St Mirren have to do more to make their case directly with their clubs.  Irrespective of fan views, I reckon Dunfermline shareholders would rather relegate their own team than Rangers.  Don’t even ask about Kilmarnock.

The Gang of 10 may speak as one.  If they get rid of Rangers they will be able to out-vote Celtic and have a unique opportunity to change voting rights, allowing them to capture long-term money currently going to Celtic.  This, together with overwhelming fan pressure, might be enough to persuade some, but this issue is more complex.

Despite initial opposition to changing the voting rights, Duff and Phelps may vote with the Gang of 10 on voting rights as part of a deal to allow them to sell a place in the SPL.  Yes – trade votes in order to sell a place in the top league.  Sporting integrity dismantled forever.

Since we first raised the alarm on this vote back in October I have been convinced Newco would be ushered into the SPL but the weight of opinion from fans from other clubs is stark.  Over half of respondents to the Survey say they will not attend SPL games if Newco is voted straight into the league.

Even the Bank of Scotland would have to recognise the business sense in siding with the fans if this view is made firmly enough.

Truth is, no one knows which way this one will go, but this is a once in a century opportunity for fans to make a stand.

  5. Neil Lennon could be hit with a minimum five-game ban if he is found guilty on both two charges by a Scottish Football Association’s judicial panel on Thursday.

The Celtic manager will be called to explain his actions over a series of incidents involving referees. Lennon is accused of breaching rules 68 and 203 of the Scottish FA’s rules.

On the agenda will be comments made towards Willie Collum following Celtic’s Scottish Communities League Cup final defeat to Kilmarnock. Lennon publicly criticised the decision to book Anthony Stokes for diving, rather than award a penalty, late in the match.

A half-time altercation with Calum Murray at Celtic’s derby defeat to Rangers is also on the charge sheet, with the manager accused of acting aggressively towards the official.

    Rules

Rule 68 states: “No recognised football body, club, official, Team Official or other member of Team Staff, player or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA, shall in an interview, a ‘blog’ on the internet, on a social networking or micro-blogging site, or in any other manner calculated or likely to lead to publicity (i) criticise the performance(s) of any or all match official(s) in such a way as to indicate bias or incompetence on the part of such match official; or (ii) make remarks about such match official(s) which impinge on his character.”

A minimum three-game ban applies for any guilty verdict, with the full range of punishments available stretching to four, five and 20 matches.

Rule 203 stipulates: “No member of Team Staff shall commit Misconduct at a match, including but not limited to committing acts of the kind described in the Schedule of Offences in Annex C (including where there is aggravation by any factor, including but not limited to prolongation of the incident; combination of different offences; continued use of offensive, abusing and/ or insulting language and/or behaviour; calling a match official a cheat and/ or calling a match official’s integrity into question; failure to comply with a match official’s requests; adoption of aggressive behaviour towards a match official; any racist, sexist, sectarian and/or otherwise discriminatory element; and the degree of any physical violence), breaching the Post Match Protocol and committing Unacceptable Conduct.”

A breach of this regulation results in a minimum two-game suspension, ranging upwards to eight and 16 games, as well as a maximum punishment of a year-long ban from football.

We appeal it and then if he still gets a ban put him on the pitch after the match anyway. Who cares if they add a game or two?

Alternatively they could treat the whole thing with disdain.

No fanfare, no fuss, no spectacle.

That would annoy the SPL and the media.

We’ve won the league, that’s all that matters.

  15. If Anthony Stokes has been banned from the Scottish Cup for one match. Why would neil Lennon’s ban not be in the Scottish Cup? Genuine question.

I also believe Neil will be taking a lawyer with him. When you look at the way the shame acted last season at Paradise I don’t see them having a leg to stand on with this one. Neil didn’t lay his hands on anyone.

I think we should also play a disrespectfully piss-poor team for the remainder of the season: 10 men, youth team players, Zaluska up-front on his own – that kind of thing.

We’ve won the league already, so it doesn’t matter.

Treat the SPL/SFA with the contempt they deserve.

  18. WDH

I can’t show my support for Neil Lennon (The Scottish Manager of the Year – 2012) by boycotting away games that fall during the term of his extended ban, and there is not much else I personally can do to hurt those who dig deep to hurt NeilLennon and his ilk – the Celtic Support – so I just celebrate the man in song (albeit youtube song) and go on waiting for our day to come.

  19. So Mr Whyte can brand the SFA as a farce and refuses to attend their hearings for 5 counts of bringing the game into disrepute.

    Not worthy media attention?

Our manager questions an inept performance and is immediately portrayed as guilty before be arrives at the hearing by the press.

And they wonder why we ask for a level playing field?

My opinion is that Celtic should refuse to comply until the SFA’s ‘tainted’ chairman does the decent thing and steps aside.

We have waited a few years for this league title and we should enjoy it. Why should the players and management staff not get to parade the trophy? Neil isn’t banned yet for a start and I would still ask for the trophy earlier than the Hearts game in which I hope Celtic kick them all over the pitch!

Celtic players themselves shouldn’t want to play for Scotland,Broonie has witnessed countless injustices against the club in his time,to me he shouldn’t be playing for them anyway but see how the national side gets on without him,Forrest and Mulgrew.I don’t want to sound reactionary but Celtic players seem to suffer from the ole Stockholm Syndrome where Scotland is concerned,Celtic couldn’t get treated any worse for withdrawing players than how we have been.

  25. Morning all!

What time is Neil up in front of the beaks?

If I was his legal team I would ask that all e-mail and mobile phone correspondence records from the MIB’s who `starred’ in those games be made available.

    Bit draconian, maybe!

I would be interested to see if they received any congratulations for their performance in those games.

You’d have to ask yourself why they need to parade a trophy to be able to celebrate winning the league.

We had a celebration at the end of last season without a trophy on display.

Celebrate, just don’t feature the trophy, or anything else connected withe the SPL regime.
