Most scouted player in years, new keeper, Balzers wreaking havoc

755

A big Celtic welcome to our new goalkeeper, Logan Bailly, who joined from Belgian side Leuven yesterday, and to Nadir Ciftci, who was confirmed a Celtic player this morning, Ronny’s third and fourth signing of the summer.  And it’s only 9 July!

Craig Gordon will be difficult to shift as Celtic’s first choice keeper but Celtic rested him regularly last season, his first back in action after three years recuperating, so Logan will expect a chance to shine and stake his claim.

Nadir Ciftci should be expecting the most difficult preseason of his career.  The weeks ahead will be an intense step up from what he was used to at Dundee United, but if he responds he stands an excellent chance of leading the line on the third Champions League qualifying round, should Celtic overcome Icelanders Stjarnan.  Next week’s second round game might come too soon.

Ciftci’s every move, kick, pass and, erm…. disputed event, has been watched by Celtic for months.  They know as much about the player as it’s possible to know without actually employing him.  They will also have had the opportunity to take references from Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.  In short, if we have another Pukki-Balde-Scepovic on our hands, we have more acute problems than simply another striker who didn’t work out.

For this reason, I’m sure Ciftci will deliver what’s expected of him.

Delighted to hear former Fifa executive committee member Chuck Blazer has been banned for life by the game’s governing body.  Blazer ‘came to a favourable arrangement’ (I think that’s the appropriate phrase on these occasions) with US prosecutors when convicted of tax evasion, money laundering and bribery.

Unfortunately, Fifa’s structure, which gives the Cayman Islands, the Cook Islands and Comoros more combined voting power than Germany and Spain, encourages corrupt patronage to thrive.  The money flushing through tiny countries in order to ‘develop the game’ ensures wealthy people are created, given powerful positions, from where they can be relied upon to vote the ‘right’ way.

Still, at least no one with Blazer’s rap sheet would be allowed to exploit the patronage to hand out blazers in order to wreak havoc on a vulnerable Scottish club (laughs away to himself for weeks).

  1. On this day in 2013 Sunderland signed Jozy Altidore who finished with an amazing 2 goals in 70 games. Win some.

What style would you rather see us play??

We are short of time every season to prepare for the qualifiers, season length and window opportunities being the main factors.

At least this year they have a chance to settle not like last year get off a plane and straight on the pitch!

That maybe so, i cant remember a player who has hardly kicked a ball in years touting himself about Europe with such demands, rather than concentrate on a great opportunity to prove himself at Celtic.

I believe we would have signed him if it wasn’t for his unrealistic demands.

Logan Bailly is the only Celtic signing this season that didn’t get a mention * till he signed *

Finally got my seat sorted out today after a marathon fiasco with the Celtic ticketing Stasi. Got a great seat in 405 and I asked specifically if it was within pie throwing range of Hamilton Tim. The wee lassie on the phone stuttered, paused and asked how far I could throw a pie.

Totally stumped me she did. That opened up a whole new physics debate I wasn’t prepared for.

After considering the mass of a Celtic pie, my average energy coefficient, average air density in the Greater Glasgow area and Newton’s three laws I concluded I still cant throw a pie and accurately hit HT’s napper cos I don’t know where he sits.

    Physics is exciting.

    ——–

Gravity, distance and the fact that you throw like a wee lassie will ensure my continued safety. On the off chance it does reach me in 405, Bon appetite :-)

I preferred Lennon’s Celtic – inventive and pragmatic in equal measure.

The counterpressing looks good v Scottish teams, but onrushing midfielders leave us exposed against technically better sides.

re. your last point – even as a Deila naysayer, I wouldn’t say they’ll have had a chance to settle. Boyata, Janko and Ciftci will get 2 competitive games v part-timers to adapt. Not exactly a long bedding-in period.

What will Ronny Deilas critics find to pick on after we qualify for the Champions League?

Ask Tiny Tim.He is a barrel of optimism.

  9. Robert88

His salary demands probably priced us out, yes.

However, taking a player on a higher wage and potentially not qualifying for the CL (and losing out on £10m revenue) are both risks. Ciftci – strong, lone striker type – looks a poor man’s Guidetti.

  10. Over the years I’ve watched some really poor strikers at Celtic (of course there’s been some absolute crackers too!) but I don’t think I’ve seen any ‘natural’ goal scorer who turned away from goal as much as Guedetti.

    Charlie Mulgrew?

He cost us nothing and has been a decent servant. He’s a threat at set pieces with his delivery and heading ability and he’s one of the most accurate passers of a ball we have.

I wouldn’t have him in our starting 11 but he’s a useful squad player.

  11. up_over_goal

We’ll see, its a shame about guidetti but he needs a reality check.

Cifti will score he’s done like griffiths with ease in a poorer side than ours, he’ll now get more opportunities a game to score.

  12. up_over_goal

Aye there’s the rub, how else can you settle the players in, buy before the other leaves, not really practical from a wages and squad size perspective.

Our season parameters leave us unprepared against teams already into their seasons.

I think it’s a difficult job for whoever is in charge at Celtic to navigate the most important games of the season before our own season has even started, I think it’s a major factor in why we have come unstuck early on in the qualifiers.

I am happy with Celtic’s business so far this year but still these games come to early for our new Bhoys that’s a fact and we have a lot of work to do to go through.

My feeling is we will be in the CL this year.

Celtic have always been vulnerable to technically better teams for as long as I can remember European teams have been nicking the ball off of us and scoring at the other end off of two or three passes:((

Boyata will go straight in, Janko I don’t think will feature unless Big Mik is injured and Ciftci I’m not sure what Ronny will do with him, he looks like a baptism of fire type to me.

I liked Neil’s Celtic too but those days are gone..

  15. Bawsman: this is to say, you’re right, keep it up.

I note that the SNP and it’s camp followers are as resistant to reason, as ready to resort to low abuse and name-calling, and as inclined to tremble on the brink of threats, as when I got to know them so well in the era of Winnie Ewing and her associated small-time grafters fifty years ago.

Definition of cognitive dissonance – eying up the English Premier League, objecting to anti-football supporter legislation and government actions, claiming to stand up against bigotry, while all the time speaking, writing and voting for the separatist, anti-Irish Catholic, legislative authors and drivers of the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act. The mental confusion and unresolved frustration of working people who vote for the party that let in, and knew they were letting in, Osborne, Duncan-Smith and the rest must be utterly disabling.

  20. Leftclicktic what little I have seen of Gary Mackay-Steven excites me. He takes on two or three players at a time, makes good space, has pace and can score goals. Early days yet but he reminds me of a certain wee red heided player. Similar build , skilled, can he reach that standard? Ronny using him as an impact sub but if he can crack it he may be a great.

Nearly every European team are more technically gifted than British teams.Even Man City,Chelsea, were cut to pieces last season in the CL.

I really think RD is our only way forward.Might be a few kicks to the Gonad region along the way,but we have to try.

As a seeded team we should be reaching the CL group stages in my opinion.

Yep,and in my opinion I should have won the Lottery,at LEAST once.

Our situation with finances, transfer window, having to play in July, does not help us at all.

The latter two really give us the main problems.Heres hoping .

    Agreed re seeding,

Buying in January would alleviate problems of playing in July.

The club will know who will be leaving or want to leave like vvd well before the end of season comes.

  29. turkeybhoy

Yep there’s a whole host of factors which could result in us not qualifying for the group stages but your ‘lottery’ analogy isn’t exactly apt if you compare the chances/odds of both scenarios.

As a seeded team we avoid the likes of Arsenal and Moscow that we’ve drawn in the past and in my opinion we should beat any of the teams we could face in the play off.
