Most scouted player in years, new keeper, Balzers wreaking havoc

755

A big Celtic welcome to our new goalkeeper, Logan Bailly, who joined from Belgian side Leuven yesterday, and to Nadir Ciftci, who was confirmed a Celtic player this morning, Ronny’s third and fourth signing of the summer.  And it’s only 9 July!

Craig Gordon will be difficult to shift as Celtic’s first choice keeper but Celtic rested him regularly last season, his first back in action after three years recuperating, so Logan will expect a chance to shine and stake his claim.

Nadir Ciftci should be expecting the most difficult preseason of his career.  The weeks ahead will be an intense step up from what he was used to at Dundee United, but if he responds he stands an excellent chance of leading the line on the third Champions League qualifying round, should Celtic overcome Icelanders Stjarnan.  Next week’s second round game might come too soon.

Ciftci’s every move, kick, pass and, erm…. disputed event, has been watched by Celtic for months.  They know as much about the player as it’s possible to know without actually employing him.  They will also have had the opportunity to take references from Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.  In short, if we have another Pukki-Balde-Scepovic on our hands, we have more acute problems than simply another striker who didn’t work out.

For this reason, I’m sure Ciftci will deliver what’s expected of him.

Delighted to hear former Fifa executive committee member Chuck Blazer has been banned for life by the game’s governing body.  Blazer ‘came to a favourable arrangement’ (I think that’s the appropriate phrase on these occasions) with US prosecutors when convicted of tax evasion, money laundering and bribery.

Unfortunately, Fifa’s structure, which gives the Cayman Islands, the Cook Islands and Comoros more combined voting power than Germany and Spain, encourages corrupt patronage to thrive.  The money flushing through tiny countries in order to ‘develop the game’ ensures wealthy people are created, given powerful positions, from where they can be relied upon to vote the ‘right’ way.

Still, at least no one with Blazer’s rap sheet would be allowed to exploit the patronage to hand out blazers in order to wreak havoc on a vulnerable Scottish club (laughs away to himself for weeks).

VVD would be a fool to go to Swansea

Would be majorly surprised if we sold him before deadline day

I would play Mulgrew CB with Bhoyata, ML RB but of course the Big Swede is very ableat CB

When he was playing regularly, I said he would not be out of place in ANY team in Europe. For us, though,IMO, Broony is more important and Virgil is amazing.

patrick … I guess we will see tomorrow if there is anything in it when the team is announced.

I have to say that a few seasons ago, I thought Mulgrew had really developed as a player, but since then he seems to have gone backwards …. for sure a decent squad man now as he can fill in at CB, LB or even left mid, and can take a good free kick … but he seems to have gone right off the boil, far too slow and beaten far too easily …. cant have that in a CB or we will ship goals ….. particularly in Europe ….

Lustig’s debut at pittodrie (I think) was a shocker I thought we have got a belter here, it must be a Swedish thing as that Henrik guy was shocking against Hibs (I think) on his debut as well, hope ML gets a wee run injury free because we r a better team with him in it

Charlie would be ideal as the left defender in a 352 formation. Efe would be good as the right defender. Bhoyata between them.

  9. The way Ronny lines us up I can only see Charlie playing in the two in front of the back four . Too slow for anywhere else.

He offers good cover for many positions so if he is prepared not to be a certain starter then a really good option from the bench .

Clogher … hadn’t heard them in years! I remember when we first moved here, every Saturday there was a scottish radio program on at lunch time … my dad loved his music… and then just after lunch, they would read out the football scores .. we had to be quiet, or he’d miss the Celtic score, and would go mental!

*the announcer was Ray Sonin formerly of the NME before he moved tae TO. There was a wee Dumbarton man, Pat, who used tae religiously listen tae the show. Every week he would say “and poor old Dumbarton again”, one day Pat sitting hauf cut phoned up and complained about the “poor old Dumbarton” comment. Next week it was “good old Dumbarton”, true story as he was a friend of my FiL.

and then at dinner time, the Irish Rovers had a variety show on the TV (only 3 channels at the time, or something like that) … we would watch Walt Disney, and then mum and dad would watch the Irish Rovers….

*nothing Irish about them as 3 were fae the Shankill, the 4th a ben Affleck used tae wear a tangering jumper, they jumped on the Irish bandwagon after a commercial for “Black Label” featured the “Merry Ploughboy”. When they got famous they soon dropped the Irish from their name.

I was looking for something and happened to see the following. Scottish Journalism really is an embarrassment in its obvious bias. It`s as though a wee bit of praise for Billy at the end equals balance!!

Anyway, have a laugh ( and does anyone know any of these Celtic supporters? 0:-) :

“Nadir Ciftci was given something to chew over by some Celtic supporters who have no
appetite to see him playing in the Hoops
next season.

The Turkish striker’s proposed move from Dundee United to the Premiership champions has brought a mixed reception from the Parkhead faithful.

Tom Welsh, Ealing, said: “I won’t be watching Celtic if they go ahead with their plan to sign Ciftci. He’s nothing special and certainly no better than Leigh Griffiths. I also believe Dundee United will be a better side without him.”

Billy Ross, Bo’ness, said: “I’m an underwhelmed Celtic fan and reviewing whether to buy my season ticket. If Ciftci is the quality we are hoping will get us into the Champions League group stage, we can forget it.”

John Grant, Glasgow, said: “Celtic may have a healthy balance sheet and be cash rich but they don’t really have anybody to spend their money on.

“None of the very top players want to play in a poor Scottish Premiership so they have to settle for signing fourth-raters like Ciftci. It says it all that our league isn’t good enough for even the mediocre Adam Matthews.”

Alex Baldwin emailed to say: “Celtic sign a dud keeper on the cheap and then go for a guy who allegedly loves the taste of flesh and could be banned for weeks if he is punished by the SFA. So much for ambition in Europe.

“In Ronny Deila they have a manager who has taken the club backwards.”

Craig McInnes, Glasgow, said: “It’s embarrassing that we are signing yet another Dundee United player as it sends out a terrible message to the young players we have at Celtic. Ciftci isn’t good enough to play for us and we’re paying way too much to get him . Surely there are better strikers out there for £1.5million.”

Steven Redman, Essex, said: “Nadir Ciftci’s disciplinary record alone should be enough to put Celtic off signing him.

“He’s shown he’s a loose cannon and we need players who have the mentality to cope with playing against the best in Europe. He doesn’t have that.

“He’s a decent signing for the Scottish Premiership but we should be trying to bring in players who will take us to another level and perform in the Champions League.”

One Dundee United fan will be happy if Ciftci ends up switching to Glasgow.

Bobby Gibb, Dundee, said: “There won’t be many Dundee United fans crying over Ciftci’s departure. Sometimes when he played for us he strolled around without a care in the world and I’m glad he’s going.

“I would urge Stephen Thompson to spend some of the money on bringing new players to Tannadice and start looking around Scottish football for more young talent.”

Adam Matthews, meanwhile, continues to get stick for his unflattering assessment of the Scottish game.

Rab Wharrie emailed: “So Adam whatshisname thinks Scottish football is not good enough for him ? I don’t recall him being a standout player.

“In fact the word struggle comes to mind. As for his comment that his new boss needs him to improve his defensive skills? Enough said.”

Adam Matthews angered people with his comments on Scottish football

Now a bit of disgruntlement from Rangers fans.

Stevie Campbell, Tollcross, said: “A lot of Rangers supporters are sitting back watching to see which players Mark Warburton brings in but he needs to get the spine of the side correct.

“That means a keeper, a dominant centre-half, a midfielder who will control the game as well as a top quality striker. I have yet to see us showing much ambition by going for quality targets. We should have been in the market for the likes of Ciftci.”

Iain Wilks, Pollok, said: “Dave King needs to get his wallet out and back up his promises by giving Warburton the cash to buy some decent players.

“It appears we are going down the bargain
basement road of free transfers and trialists and it’s going to be another long season unless we spend on a bit of genuine quality.”

Finally, we end on a positive note.

Gerry Russell, Kilsyth, said: “It was a magnificent gesture from my hero, Billy McNeill, to donate all of his medals to Celtic as everything he has done has been for the good of the club.

“Why he hasn’t been knighted is beyond me but he is top notch so far as Celtic fans are concerned.” “

clogher … two that were popular when I was in Halifax (early 90’s) were Great Big Sea, and the Irish Descendants …. there was a Cape Breton fiddler, Ashley MacIsaac, but seemed a bit of a jerk, and said some naughty things, so has sort of gone out of fashion… but as I recall, he played a good filddle … not as good as John McCusker, but still pretty good.

  28. Just another thought on Charlie . One thing that was never in dispute about him was his ability at set pieces . I wonder if the injury that kept him out for so long had been troubling him for a good while.

If his injury is fully healed hopefully the dead ball ability will come back too , this will make him an asset again.
