Neil Lennon’s next decision, marquees and sunshine

456

I hope Neil Lennon takes the Hibs job. He’s a talented coach who has achieved far beyond the expected mark of a 44-year-old. After leaving Celtic two years ago he gave Bolton a temporary respite, rescuing them from immediate relegation before the inevitable happened a year later.

Bolton were on the slide and needed a miracle worker. Hibs, on the other hand, can surely only go one way. Managing a second successive failing club would be difficult to recover from. Easter Road has also allowed Alan Stubbs to enhance his managerial stock, despite not reaching the play-off final in either of his two seasons in charge.

Right now Hibs are a great opportunity for Neil.

No harm meant to Colin Kazim-Richards but the sight of him going through a medical in Brazil was welcome. He was one of a large number of players acquired over the last two seasons who never looked like a Celtic player, on paper, or on the field. It’s best for player and club he moves on.

What kind of times are these? Marquees deployed to protect scores of Celtic season ticket applicants from sunburn. Surely some parallel universe.

does not seem like a news story south of the border. Can’t seem to find it anywhere else. Does come from that bastion of impartiality the Belfast Tele though so must be true.

As ugly as it is this probably happens in every major town throughout Europe. I am sure if the Tele looked hard enough they might find this happens in central Belfast rather in a foreign capital (© DUP)

  21. I think it is possible to take a middle line between the two extremities where Position A is that the Celtic crowd has only come back because the Rangers are back and we have missed them, and Position B which states that we have returned because we have a high value bling manager and Moneyball is dead and we are gonna be signing stars again.

The loss of interest and attendance that we have witnessed and the general negativity shown towards Celtic in the Rangers-dead years meant that the Celtic Board must feel somewhat vindicated in their “punt to nothing” experiment with development coaching and stringent limits on transfer fees and salaries, as they felt confident of the gap between us and our nearest Scottish challengers, once Rangers were dead. We even managed a wee bit Euro success with Neil Lennon and one semi-decent Euro run with Ronny but it was obvious that we had come down from the WGS level of achievement and competitiveness.

The noises I picked up from fellow Celtic fans told me that

    a) There were a lot of fans who missed the perverted thrill of a form of Rangers in the league. Many wanted them back in order to give them a few cheap beatings while they were uncompetitive. Ronny’s first cheap victory over them just whetted that appetite.

    b) Ronny was a dead man walking even if he had won the SC semi-final convincingly. The Board knew a change of face was needed for the forthcoming season.

    c) Having tilted at bigger names in Moyes, Rodgers, Di Matteo and Villas-Boas they were lucky enough to land one of them in Brendan. Even though Brendan was unlikely to be offered a top 6 EPL club, he could easily have found an EPL club position and it is a sign of confidence in Celtic that he did sign up. Our support would have come back for any new manager but they have come back in larger numbers because it is someone who is perceived as a bigger name.

    d) Though he is a very welcome and exciting signing, Brendan has done nothing and won nothing with Celtic yet. There have been no big player signings and the “Moneyball” approach, which is whatever people want it to mean anyway, has not been announced as dead yet.

    e) The fairest deduction I can make is that a proportion of our crowd has returned and was always going to return because there is an Ibrox club to play against, a further proportion have returned because there is a new manager and they were fed up with the old one, and a surprisingly large proportion have come back because they believe Brendan is a signal of a “speculate to accumulate” policy. I fear they will not have their expectations fully realised but a more positive attitude can only be a good thing for a club that had become too fractious within the uncertainties of Scottish football since 2012.

So, depending on what end of the telescope you are looking through, you will deduce from the signs above that nothing has changed and we are just being distracted by blingy squirrels OR you will be expecting a huge change in fortune and position because we have a highly valued manager and all else will follow.

Me, I will welcome Brendan, I will remain highly sceptical that a Rangers director being less than classy in his celebrations has made the scales fall from DD’s eyes, and I will wait and see who we sign and sell and how we perform before I make my mind up about how we are progressing.

I am optimistic that our fortunes can improve just because we are more united as a club and that will give us a boost and a start. Nevertheless a couple of challenging draws in 3 rounds of CL qualifying could leave that optimism dented and deflated. It is easy to win MOTM for June when there are no matches. Brendan will have his real test in late July and August when we face combining pre-season training with a challenging CL qualifying campaign.

My own pre-conditions for signing back up to the full support of our club have not yet been met but I remain optimistic that they will be. I will always remain in support of the team no matter what happens.

Why didn’t Belfast Telegraph name the pub?

Why didn’t journalist visit pub to ask questions in pursuit of the truth?

The two students could have given the name of the pub. The Gardai could have been asked to explain their lack of action.

Like Awe Naw, I would like to know if this is a true story or propaganda.
