Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Hope you are right on Fridjonnson. What we need is a penalty box striker – not someone (else!) who does their best work outside the box. For what we paid for him it’s very low risk in any case.

It would be bad enough if it was his own opinion, but it is baffling why anyone would be willing to put their name to a Jack Irvine press release.

That’s saying something. Not exactly a shortage of zombie loonballs. Personally I think Graham has simply used the whole thing to try and create a media career for himself. No doubt the gullible zombies lap it up. While they’re still paying attention to these characters they will always be one step away from oblivion.

But ultimately we are a football club with a football team with a fan base drawn from an array of personalities from across the world. 12. Kris Commons: ‘No plans to leave Celtic’

Kris Commons has insisted that he has no intention of leaving Celtic.

The 30-year-old, who arrived at Parkhead from Derby County in 2011, has recently been linked with a return to England.

However, the midfielder has revealed that he and his family “couldn’t be any happier” in Glasgow.

“I’ve played a long time in England and there is no great yearning to go back. My family and I are very settled up here. Both of my boys were born in Scotland and that is the most important thing for me,” he told the Daily Record.

“There is no reason for me to look for something different and to think about moving away. That’s three years we have been here now and we honestly couldn’t be any happier.

“So for me, to be as settled as I can be and for the family to be as happy as they are, it shows on how I’m playing on the pitch. If you feel good about yourself it helps your football.”

Commons has scored 20 goals for the champions so far this season.

  13. It is often said on CQN that entrenched opinions are never changed no matter how powerful the rhetoric thrown at them. I usually feel that no-one admits to a change of view but often slowly and surely they adopt a less entrenched position, develop a better understanding of the opposing view or a undergo a reversal of view.

I think LiviBhoy’s two excellent posts on Leigh Griffiths provided just that impetus (is that ok malceye?) to the debate on CQN.

Hamilton Tim was quite right to state his nuanced views on the dangers of having too forthright, opinionated and hot-headed a character around our club and, although his nuanced views were sorely twisted by so many seeking a straw argument to rubbish, he set a tone of being willing to entertain and give consideration to opposing thoughts.

HT may stand by his original views but I think the support as a whole will be better prepared to accept Leigh Griffiths because of the arguments mustered by LiviBhoy & others in posts on Celtic sites like this one.

Leigh can be assured of a very warm reception from us, if he comes.

Well, at least until we lose a game or he fails to score:-)

  15. Celtic star Darnell Fisher confident of keeping Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd quiet

    28 Jan 2014 15:40

THE 19-year-old believes the Hoops strong back-four will not fear going up against Scotland international Boyd – who has only scored once against the Parkhead outfit – and hopes to continue his side’s 22 game unbeaten run.

Darnell FIsher, left, hopes Celtic can continue their unbeaten run against Kilmarnock

    Jeff Holmes/PA Wire

DARNELL FISHER is unlikely to lie awake tonight worrying about Kilmarnock striker Kris Boyd ending Celtic’s unbeaten Scottish Premiership record at Parkhead on Wednesday.

The champions have gone 22 games without defeat in the league since the start of the campaign and have not lost a goal in their last nine league matches as they stride towards another title.

Killie’s best hopes of an upset – or even scoring a goal – probably lies with former Rangers and Middlesbrough hit-man Boyd, who was called into the Scotland squad for the first time in three years for the friendly in Norway last November due to an impressive return to form this season which has brought him 13 goals so far for the Rugby Park outfit.

And although the 30-year-old’s scoring record against Celtic is poor – he has only notched once against the Parkhead side – Hoops manager Neil Lennon revealed his admiration for a player who has grabbed 211 goals in Scottish football, saying: “He has always been a very good footballer and you never lose that knack of scoring goals.”

However, when Fisher was asked at the club’s pre-match media conference about Boyd, he replied: “He’s an okay player but we have got a good back-four.”

When eyebrows were raised at his evaluation of one of the most prolific attackers in the Scottish game, the 19-year-old right-back remained nonplussed.

“He’s all right,” he said, before going on to speak about Killie and the increasing pressure on Celtic’s domestic records.

“I have seen a bit of them because obviously Jacko (Jackson Irvine) is on loan there, so I speak to him a bit but I haven’t seen that much of them.

Fisher thinks Celtic’s strong defence can keep Killie striker Kris Boyd at bay

“As long as the run keeps going it is going to get harder each game.

“We are aware of it and we have to be on our toes at all times.

“For Fraser (Forster) and the back four, we want to keep as many clean sheets as possible.

“It is a big target to go unbeaten and we have gone 22 games so far, so hopefully it can continue.

“We are not putting so much pressure on ourselves.

“The manager stresses to us that the league will take care of itself, and that we need to keep unbeaten, keep winning games and keeping clean sheets.”

Englishman Fisher has Wales full-back Adam Matthews and Sweden defender Mikael Lustig blocking his way in to Lennon’s side on a regular basis.

However, both are currently injured which allowed him to make his ninth appearance of the season in the 4-0 win over Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday.

“It inspires me,” he said. “It is good, it helps me, it is not intimidating, I can learn.

“You can talk to them and ask them certain things about the game.

“Both are very good full-backs. Adam is quicker and Mikael is good in the air.

“I get little bits from each of them and you try to put your own stamp on it and try to be better.

“I just wanted to play as much as possible this season. I didn’t think I would play this much but I need to keep pushing.

“You don’t know what is going to happen in football, especially here. I have to keep pushing and trying to learn.”

Meanwhile, Celtic have complained to the Scottish Professional Football League after their home Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone was rearranged with just over two weeks’ notice.

The runaway league leaders were due to host the Saints on Saturday, February 15, with a 3pm kick-off.

However, the latest round of games selected for live television which were announced on Tuesday revealed that the match will now be played on Sunday, February 16 at 12.45pm.

The statement read: “Celtic Football Club would like to stress its disappointment with the most recent fixture change involving our match against St Johnstone FC.

“We apologise to our supporters for this late notice and the inconvenience this will undoubtedly cause.

“However, the matter is out of our control.

“We have made a complaint to the SPFL to record our disappointment regarding this issue and, going forward, we hope this situation can be improved to take greater account of the interests of supporters.”

Elsewhere, St Mirren’s home game with Aberdeen on February 15 has been brought forward to a 12.45pm kick-off on the same day.

Dundee United’s game with Motherwell on February 22 has been moved forward by a day to the Friday night, with Hibernian’s home match on March 1 against the Taysiders also being moved to the Friday.

Celtic’s trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts on Saturday, February 22 will now kick-off at 12.45pm, as will East Fife’s League One match with Rangers on Saturday, March 1.

Lennon says he wants a deal wrapped-up soon or he will turn his attention to other targets ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Meanwhile, Celtic are keen on Dutch winger Guus Huppert, 21, who is catching the eye in his homeland with Roda. Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are also monitoring the situation.

And in Romania.. the father of teenage winger Dorin Rotariu claims the Hoops have had a bid for the 18-year-old turned down by Dinamo Bucharest. Not the retiring type, Rotariu earlier claimed Manchester United were in talks to secure his signature.

Totally agree about the fixture re-arrangement issues. That is a genuine mistreatment of the life blood of our game, the match day attenders. With the onslaught of the OB at Football bill, specifically targeting our supporters, it is no wonder that so many are peed aff with going to games.

Of course, I part company with you on the signing issues, as you know, but the match cancellations and re-arrangements are a much bigger problem and a fairly formal apology from the official site is nowhere near good enough.

    Good evening Guys,

Lots of opinions with regards to Griffiths. Still cant understand us paying £2 million each for both Balde and Pukki and they dont get a regular game, yet we are hoping to get Griffiths for less than a million because Lennon thinks he is the answer to our striker problems. Why didnt we just buy him and forget the other 2 to start with. Does anybody think that the youngster at St Johnstone is not worth a punt. From what ive seen he is very mobile, quick as youth on is side and scores goals. Stevie May.

For all the posters wanting a 6 million pound striker, could they throw a name into the ring so I can google what we might get. Also what does a player with that transfer price command in wages? £30,000 or £40,000 a week? Which in turn would make the fee £12.2 million or £14.3 million overall on a player that’s never sampled 1.The finer arts of Scottish football 2.The fine climate or 3.Our men in the middle.

In Leigh Griffiths we would be getting someone who knows where the goal is and has sampled all 3 of the above. As for the baggage I am quite sure 90% of us have done something we regret when we were younger.
