Never step into a great man’s shoes, Nadir

798

Remember Henri Camara?  Martin O’Neill paid a significant loan fee to sign him 10 years ago, in the considerable wake of Henrik Larsson.  Henri flopped and soon lost his place in the team but the weight of responsibility thrust upon his frame was considerable.  No one could come close to filling the gap left in the Celtic team.

Nadir Ciftci would do well to consider whose shoes he’s stepping into at Celtic.  Last summer’s striker signings, John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic could hardly muster a start the second half of the season.  Leigh Griffiths, who arrived 18 months ago, got the striker’s gig most weeks, but Leigh came to Celtic with as illustrious a heritage as Nadir.

Never step into a great man’s shoes, but Nadir’s not doing that.  This is the perfect time for a striker to join Celtic, I hope he has the appetite.

I see the great and the good in the media are flogging lyrical at the prospect of a prodigy arriving from Madrid.  None of this has come from Celtic.  The player may become available at some point but I reckon it remains a hard task convincing Real his immediate future should lie in Glasgow.

I see the Glasgow Evening Times closest to home and most deeply hurting version of SMSM , couldn’t help themselves with the ole Celtic ‘signing stalls’ transfer style cliche.

  8. Hope Ronny starts with the Euro team tomorrow night and gives them the bulk of the first half together before ringing the changes. I know we should beat Stjarnan easily enough but the first competitive game angle always makes me nervous.

I think their relationship would have been listed as ‘complicated’ on 14th Facebook!

As Robert’s health deteriorated quickly not long after, and without a male heir, there would have been a real possibility of his brother seeking to muscle in.

Not only was Robert’s faither in law not much of a rebel. Neither was his daughter, Bruce’s wife. She chided on as they were being inaugurated after his coup that they were playing a game as though they were children.

    south of Tunis,

I think I read yesterday that you were heading to Oviedo, I spent a week in Asturias two years ago, really loved it. Great town, buzzes around the markets and cathedral on a Saturday, pipe bands all the rage in this ‘Celtic’ Kingdom. Got my son a set of the Real Oviedo hooped away shirt, I believe in light of the help provided by Irish fans during the most recent financial difficulties.

Don’t know if you plan to head to Cudillero but it is a stunning seaside town that serves amazing seafood, a wee bit pricey but worth the journey.

I’m sure you will enjoy the area, the roads, bridges and tunnels are incredible, nae wonder Spain is broke, kind of.

Your comment that Communism was great in theory but didn’t work in practice is fair enough if you take the Soviet bloc as your example.

How can you say Capitalism works when over 50% of the world’s population lacks the basic necessities like sufficient food and running water? There must be something better and while there is such inequality in the world, the have nots will justifiably demand change. If their demands are ignored, there will be trouble and revolutionary groups/religious zealots will find many willing listeners to their message.

So In the words of TD67 GIRFUY

something to chew over by some Celtic supporters who have no
appetite to see him playing in the Hoops
next season.

The Turkish striker’s proposed move from Dundee United to the Premiership champions has brought a mixed reception from the Parkhead faithful.

Tom Welsh, Ealing, said: “I won’t be watching Celtic if they go ahead with their plan to sign Ciftci. He’s nothing special and certainly no better than Leigh Griffiths. I also believe Dundee United will be a better side without him.”

Billy Ross, Bo’ness, said: “I’m an underwhelmed Celtic fan and reviewing whether to buy my season ticket. If Ciftci is the quality we are hoping will get us into the Champions League group stage, we can forget it.”

John Grant, Glasgow, said: “Celtic may have a healthy balance sheet and be cash rich but they don’t really have anybody to spend their money on.

“None of the very top players want to play in a poor Scottish Premiership so they have to settle for signing fourth-raters like Ciftci. It says it all that our league isn’t good enough for even the mediocre Adam Matthews.”

Alex Baldwin emailed to say: “Celtic sign a dud keeper on the cheap and then go for a guy who allegedly loves the taste of flesh and could be banned for weeks if he is punished by the SFA. So much for ambition in Europe.

“In Ronny Deila they have a manager who has taken the club backwards.”

Craig McInnes, Glasgow, said: “It’s embarrassing that we are signing yet another Dundee United player as it sends out a terrible message to the young players we have at Celtic. Ciftci isn’t good enough to play for us and we’re paying way too much to get him . Surely there are better strikers out there for £1.5million.”

Steven Redman, Essex, said: “Nadir Ciftci’s disciplinary record alone should be enough to put Celtic off signing him.

“He’s shown he’s a loose cannon and we need players who have the mentality to cope with playing against the best in Europe. He doesn’t have that.

“He’s a decent signing for the Scottish Premiership but we should be trying to bring in players who will take us to another level and perform in the Champions League.”

  31. Bonjour.

I see some talk on here about the two Australians shot in a car in Belgium back in the 90’s. I have first hand experience of the aftermath of that particular incident, but that’s a story to be told over a beverage of your choice, or two.

Anyway, my gripe today is ….. eventually after much deliberation I decided this week to sit down and watch Game of Thrones (have got up to episode 8 of series 1, so far). Am I the only person who thinks the whole show has been hyped way above it’s true entertainment value? I mean it looks very much like Coronation Street wi Codpieces to me !!

Turkish League suspended for one week following attack on Fenerbahçe team bus.

The Turkish Football Federation has decided to suspend all first-tier Spor Toto Super League games, along with the Ziraat Turkey Cup match-ups, for one week following a gun attack on Fenerbahçe’s team bus on April 4, which left the bus driver seriously wounded.

“All club leaders demanded delaying all games for one week,” said Yıldırım Demirören, head of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), after a marathon of meetings with football officials and Sports Minister Akif Çağatay Kılıç. Demirören said all club presidents were willing to respond to the attack on Fenerbahçe and Turkish football. The federation did not postpone the past week’s closing game between Beşiktaş and Istanbul Başakşehir Spor Kulübü, which was scheduled to be played last night, as the decision was only valid starting April 7.
