New club/same club. What if the boot was on the other foot?

754

I’ve dipped in and out of the online debate on Scottish football this week. Can’t believe how much has been written on the new club/same club debate. To what end?

If the boot was on the other foot, and Celtic were liquidated in 2012, my relationship with post-liquidation Celtic would be my business only. I’d have no interest in anyone else’s view on the status of Celtic. I am emotionally invested in Celtic, so would be happy to accept any ‘same club’ theory as fact, and would have no motivation in listening to any contrary view on the matter.

Similarly, under the same scenario, there’s not a ‘Rangers’ fan alive who would consider a scenario, with an insolvency practitioner considering whether to let newly formed Cevco 5088 use the name Celtic for their football team, and conclude: “Yip, that’s the same Celtic that started back in 1888, whether they get permission to call themselves Celtic or not”.

It’s lunacy and an insult to all our intelligence to suggest otherwise. I’ve yet to meet a ‘Rangers’ fan who could tell me with a straight face that they would be calling Celtic the same club under if the situation was reversed.  In fact, they have openly admitted they would be filling their boots on the subject.

The critical moment in Craig Whyte’s plan was achieved when Duff and Phelps were appointed as administrators, who would subsequently be in a position not to object to a newco calling itself Rangers, as Airdrieonians administrators and liquidators stopped Airdrie United using the name from 2002 until 2013.  Declining to object at Companies House to the use of name was a arbitrary act by an administrator, but it was critical to Whyte’s plan to sell tens of thousands of season tickets.

‘Rangers’ fans, however, can believe what they like, no matter what Uefa wrote. All other football fans will point to this huge liquidation event and hear no more on the matter.

You’re not going to convince one ‘Rangers’ fan, who believes they support the same club that was liquidated, that they are wrong. Why should they deny themselves the history and traditions of their club (OK, I’m at it here, but you know what I mean). Don’t waste your time, you’ll convince no one who doesn’t want to be convinced.

Similarly, if Newco Rangers win 51 of the next 100 titles, and Aberdeen win the other 49, when they recall their remarkable achievements, some Motherwell fan will pop up and say, “Aye, but you let our club die”.

For a century or more, if they survive that long, ‘Rangers’ will pitch up to games and hear “Glasgow Rangers, you let your club die”, up and down the country. Just as you’re wasting your time trying to convince a ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t want to be convinced otherwise, the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 will forever be marked when a club with that name takes the field. Forever. It’s not going to stop. Anywhere.

All efforts to expunge this notion from the nation’s consciousness have only raised awareness of the detail of the liquidation.

You and I have been talking about Cognitive Dissonance for a decade. It’s the phenomenon when an individual is caused discomfort by an apparent fact which runs contrary to a cherished belief. It’s what you’re seeing and reading in the sameco coverage, and could have been written for these great times to be a Celtic supporter.

Enjoy the game; serve moderate helpings of Cognitive Dissonance.

Hope this wall to wall old firm s**** is over soon.

    Its brain damage.

Hope the Bhoys put them right in their place tomorrow, the Huns are insufferable bigot morons, the daftest and vilest fans in fitba.

Cannot stand the fecking sight of them.

P.S. I doesnt matter how you twist it, whatever metaphysical spin you attempt to put on it.

Rangers are no more…finito…..Sevco are a new club.

No amount of dissembling will change the reality.

I dont care what they think or believe….I know Rangers are dead.

    End of Story.

Amidst all the talk about non football stuff, and whatever we know about them behind the scenes and their farcical setup, the new club come to Celtic Park as a team who dominate possession in most of their matches. This is something we don’t really face domestically, a team who average 55-65% possession in their games.

That said, they struggle to kill teams off, and going forward they have nowhere near the potency that we have, either first choice or in reserve.

It’ll be a Celtic win, but maybe not as straightforward as some think.

Er we also dominate possession. That’s something they won’t have faced before either. So it comes down to who is better able to exploit what possession they do have, and is better at killing teams off. Us.

Er, stating the obvious about us dominating possession.

A lot of people don’t realise this Sevco team do likewise, and surprisingly have done so in the few top flight matches they have played.

And I did say we would win btw, but there are people taking it for granted.

Worth bearing in mind our respective fixture lists too. It would not be wrong to say we now have a mcuh easier run of games, and could easily be 10 points and more clear of second by the end of the first round of games.

In our last 4 domestic games (need to use that because they have never been in Europe) we have had 63%, 68%, 65% and 52% possession – an average of 62%.

This possession has been against our closest challengers from last season, not relegation cannon fodder.

So we also dominate possession, but the difference is that we DO kill teams off (witness Hearts, St Johnstone and Aberdeen).

  19. Tomorrow is our first ever league game against our new noisy neighbours. A chance to keep our 100% record going. To go into a bigger game on a high. And a chance to show them just how far behind the champions they actually are.

I’m thinking of this in the same way as pretty much any any other game against an SPFL side. We will win, hopefully by a few goals. A stylish attacking performance and a clean sheet would be great too. And no new injuries of course.

We’ve already beaten the teams that finished second, third and fourth last season. A newly promoted new club should pose us with less of a challenge.

  20. I don’t care what “Rangers” fans think their Frankenstein club is, but I do care that the SFA and SPFL go along with their same-club delusion.

So according to your logic, I as a season ticket holder, should only be attending games against our nearest rivals for the league title. So that’s 2 games a season v Aberdeen if they are 2nd. Presumably if Aberdeen are then overtaken by Hearts, I get to see THEM now. Maybe I’ll get really lucky and 2nd place will change hands several times.

Seriously, all you people who keep telling us that you have chosen not to go to tomorrow’s game, fine. I get it. We get it rammed down our throats every day. But please don’t tell me I am validating Sevco or accepting cheating or whatever, by attending. I go to all home games and a handful of away games. I go to see Celtic, not the opposition.

Maybe that makes you a better person than the 50,000+ Celtic supporters who will be there tomorrow. I for one will just have to live with that.
